Hello

I’m taking advantage of a recently opened account on Snuff House to express my thanks and appreciations to the collective work of fellow snuff partakers for allowing access to this mine of information.

I live in France and snuff takes some effort to obtain. I would say 1 on 5 tabac stores have snuff.

I was thankful to find 1 store in my town that frequently has Makla Neffa snuffs and I enjoy them a lot. Both Bledi and Afrikia are superbe. If someone is looking for a non mentholed and kick oriented experience, I would recommend. The closest match I have found for the burn so far is Mc Chrystal, yet that’s online. Even though the burn is similar, the nicotine is nonetheless more potent in Neffa. I’m 1 month in wait for an order on Mc Chrystal, so the whole online shopping process is going to take time for me to adapt to. Mr Snuff.uk is the fastest except for EPD international branch which has smaller stocks in snuff products. I discovered Toque’s offer and I am also waiting for a package.

My passion is for snuff first and foremost, as it is highly therapeutic for me. I live with chronic and debilitating pain. Snuv Reaper/Rigor Mortis are the most therapeutic in that regard that I have tried. The later is for the most intense phases. I have however experienced a range of products which all have their excellences as stand-alones.

Yet, with my personal experience and my outlook towards snuff as a pain reducing therapy, I come to my questions :
Can I reproduce the alkaline process from Mc Chrystal, Makla Neffa, SNUV ? I have :
Potassium carbonate
Sodium carbonate
Slaked lime
Ammonium chloride
Ammonium carbonate
Cigars

I’m also awaiting for Toque’s Rustica base.
With these elements, could it be possible to come close to the alkaline reaction and the nicotine delivered in specific products? Are these unreachable trade secrets?
I want to come close to the experience that I find therapeutic for me while not being at the sole mercy of shipping, of store stock, etc. Many thanks to whomever took of their time to read my post.

Hi there, I wonder why on earth you would want to make your own snuff when you can actually buy some no-nonsense products locally - that’s really out of my mind; such will would only make sense if you could not get any smokeless tobacco in your neck of the woods, as in my case of total deprivation, i. e. living in a region where sales of smokeless tobacco and procuring by distance means is prohibited; in your case, it’s not even economically feasible to make your own, and that factor aside, snuffmaking would be a major waste of your precious life, or time, if you will, and I sincerely advise against engaging in it - better play another round of petanque, chess, or football, cycle up or climb another mountain, grow your own vegies or flowers, visit gym, spend more time with your close and dearest ones etc - pretty much anything would be of greater therapeutic value than snuffmakery), but it’s good to hear that you do care about the ingredients and don’t fancy buying a cat in a sack (if this makes any sense) - yes, you have a right to know what exactly you are stuffing your nose with, if you have chosen to do so.

Fortunately, many snuff compositions are disclosed on the public databases of various health authorities in the EU. Some of them even provide data about tobacco blends and parts of tobacco leaf used. Some manufacturers disclose compositions and list the ingredients on tin labels (kudos to 6 Photo for disclosing their M. G. Madras formula on 100 g tin; cheers to 41 Photo for uploading test reports on their website - 6-ish% calcium hydroxide really does justice to fine dry tobacco dust).

Moist snuff:

So, no, snuff does not contain powdered glass. You can now rest assured.

P. S. Consider yourself lucky having local access to neffas, Ozona, Gletscherprise and all those chemma-type oral rustica tobaccos. You got a pretty solid assortment in France - no grounds for complaining!

Thank you very much for taking time formulating your reply and for the precious links – I am now well informed thanks to you. You are right on many fronts, however as I feel for the difficulties you are describing and the bans that exist in various lands with borders and customs, there are layers in depth to managing pain which are not always easily discussed. For example I have come across a peculiar cigar manufacturer called Schimmelpennick that I have found therapeutic if it weren’t for the combustion. However with this knowledge I will be able to attempt a snuff adaptation to test the pain relieving properties of said cigar in snuff form. I am very grateful. The ‘why on earth’ exists because of pain. To find solutions is to find peace and to have peace is to share peace. Nonetheless I am entirely in agreement with supporting current market providers who offer splendid products. I am simply in an specific situation, thus why I asked and I thank you once more.

I’m realizing that to fully enjoy snuffs like Toque Spanish Gem my chronic pain has to be lower. When taken then, it is a beautiful experience. My hat’s off to the cook.

Today’s pain is intense. I decided to try a mixture that came to mind. I use a small barista dosing spoon. The base is Schmalzler SF for the smooth sweetness, I then added White Elephant for the strength. Their opposites mix well. It becomes a snuff butter texture. I then added Snuv Reaper for the spiciness needed in the moment I am going through. Alléluia.

D

I’ve done another small batch and I will observe how this one ages. To this batch I have added Snuv Chok-A-Pop by subtracting some White Elephant. The fresh mixture is more satisfying taste wise, it does slightly lose some strength, however the sweet pastry like nose feel is enjoyable and the Snuv Reaper’s large spectrum of aromas are more canalized.

I’ve discovered a renewed interest for Viking snuff. I had originally purchased a tin of ISS and wasn’t too impressed at first. After leaving it be for a long while I realized it had dried out completely and when I snuffed it again it was an immediate rush of enjoyment. I finished the tin and ordered some more, Thor’s hammer, Dark Rappee and Brown. Thor’s hammer is a definitive favorite and I keep returning to it throughout the day.

I could sense the potential for Dark Rappee, but it felt too moist and heavy making it harder for me to enjoy. I decided to put it on parchment paper in the oven for 5 minutes. It’s now much more to my liking. The bite is more pronounced and the Rappee’s full spectrum of dark roasted delight is splendid. I’m tempted to regrind the snuff by using a mortar that I’ve owned for a long time in my journey to finding therapeutic plants. It will have to wait for better days.

Brown on the other hand, I don’t believe it’s a moisture issue, it’s more that the backdrip and overall taste I find less satisfying. I’ll see once it dries out naturally.

N

Your abuse of this rappee is anathema to me, but all is good if it produces a snuff you enjoy. I can discern no difference between Viking Dark Rappee and Wilson’s Brunswick, of which I use quite a lot, so there’s another option if one is ever out of stock or more expensive.

D

@nisam Haha, yes I can understand that, I’m not much for boundaries when I enjoy something I like to tinker, mix and match a lot.
Speaking of anathema, I’ve just done a complete regrind of Auld Alliance that was sitting in my fridge because of what I found to be a strange granular size and it didn’t allow me to fully savour it. I got no burn and it kept falling out of my nose. Now, it’s great. There’s a nice burn and I can fancy the full taste of this exquisitely well done snuff. I will now purchase it again (if available). It won’t sit in my fridge again.

I’ve also slightly made Viking Dark Rappee thinner by using a spoon and breaking down the lumps and it’s perfect. The sensation in the nose lasts longer is more prevalent. I’m really getting more and more found of the Viking brand.

Thank you very much for the recommendation, it’s on my next month order list.

N

I sieve Brunswick and break down the remaining lumps for that very reason.

I reopened the batches of mixed snuffs I made since it’s a tough day for pain and I needed a stronger snuff. It has aged well and the aromas are well preserved. It’s a pick me up snuff when the going gets rough. Here’s the recipe for one of the batch I did and still enjoy for the strength, feel and taste :

In any tin size – 1 large layer of Perlesreuter Schmalzler
1 small layer of Madras M.G
1 small layer of SWS Auld Alliance
1 tiny layer of White Elephant and Chok A Pop
A few snuff spoon pinches of Rigor Mortis

*Layers are pressed down snuff until cake like consistency

After that it’s just mixing around a little, closing the tin and shaking.
