Well… it’s not really that fancy. All I’m doing is removing all of my WoS and Samuel Gawith snuffs from their factory tins and placing them in new plastic screw top containers. Along the way I am re-hydrating some of the blends that have lost their moisture due to the poor container quality. Has anyone else done the same, or thought about it? For those of you that I have traded with, some of you have received these plastic screw tops. They are available at Wal-Mart in the Health & Beauty section… 2/$.97
I was going to ask you where you got those, Chris. Even though there is no gasket have you found them to be air tight over time? They are nice little tins.
I’ve had some Schmalzler in a few for about 2 months… still good. For comparison, I kept some Schmalzler in a plastic snuff box, in about a week it was dried out. These things screw down pretty tight, and if you want you could just wrap a few inches of teflon tape around the threads, that would make them plenty tight.
Do you have any pics or a UPC? I work at Wal-Mart, might be able to get them a LITTLE cheaper.
Chris, I still have those German ones in those same containers you sent me. They do work well. My storage is a hodge podge of different containers gathered from the 4 corners of the planet. I’m working towards order, though. You are correct with the shmalzlers, and any oil based snuffs too. They are impossible to rehydrate if they dry out. Wilson’s snuffs usually rehydrate well, I’ve found.
I’ll occasionally give a very dry snuff a squirt of water from a spray bottle set to a fine mist. It does wonders for rejuvenating old snuffs.
The best and least expensive containers I’ve found for storing loose snuff are Gerber glass baby food jars. With the food in them, it costs $.50 for one that will easily hold 50 grams, and $.70 for one that will hold 100 grams. Empty containers are more expensive than that, and since it’s “For the Children” you can bet that the seal is totally airtight and solid. If you like things like “pureed butterscotch squash” or “liquified ferret kidneys” you can also get a free meal or two out of it.
Actually if you go for the fruit things, like apple sauce, the Gerber baby food jars kick ass, since you can eat and actually enjoy the food.
@KrashKing: I will get a UPC tonight. @LHB: The thing is, these containers are exactly 10g, it’s really a thing of magic. How often do you find something that is so perfect for this and so cheap.
The only problem I see for myself is gaining access to the ‘Health & Beauty’ section…
LOL! I suppose you could have your wife pick them up. They are located where all of the travel size shampoo’s and things are.
I also created a “re-hydration chamber” last night. It’s a tupperware container with about 1/2 inch of water in the bottom. I submerged 2 of the plastic tins in there over night. This morning the snuffs were good as new. Works like a charm and creates a ready-snuff, no need to mix. Right now I have my WoS Brunswick in, should be ready by the time I get home.
@cstokes4 Pardon me is this seems ignorant, but do you cover the container with the tupperware lid?
Ahh Yes,… before I got married and the kids came along, I could be found every Friday night in a ‘re-hydration chamber’
@LHB: The tupperware is large, maybe 6 inches across and about 4 inches deep. The tins are only about an inch high. I simply place them in the box and place the lid on there air tight. The snuffs suck the water right up.
Here’s the UPC: 683333215688
Gawith Hoggarth do a very sturdy little 25g plastic tubs with tight fitting screw top lid.
stu where do you get that I would love 25 grams of my favorite G&H snuff.
My Smoking Shop has them.
I wish a US shop would expand their GH selection.
