The Viking Snuff

http://www.mysmokingshop.co.uk/index2.php?mod=category&man=451&cat=82 This just went up on the Mysmokingshop site. Guessing it’s a Samuel Gawith contract blend, looking at the tin. Anybody tried this yet?

Never heard of that one until now. No doubt I’ll be giving it a go. Well, not the spearmint…

i wonder if its the viking that makes snus for the do it yourselfer.

I spotted this the other day as well. Out of interest, if you go to the Taxi pages on Mysmokingshop it says something along the lines of ‘No longer available. Viking is a good alternative’.

My order of Viking Dark (the recommendation to replace Taxi Red) and Viking Brown arrived from Mysmokingshop this morning (thursday). I have tried them both, but will try them again tomorrow with a clear nose before I give an opinion.

It’s these two plain snuffs that interest me, I look forward to your thoughts.

Yes i have tried both the Dark and the Brown and as Taxi Red was my daily snuff until Mysmokingshop were unable to resupply i will vouch for these. Lovers of plain dark strong tobacco snuffs will find comfort here, there is none of the poop smell of a Taxi Red sadly but this is compensated by a stronger natural tobacco scent. Nicotine wise these really hit the spot and this was the thing i was most dubious about as Taxi Red is strong indeed.

My thoughts, for what they are worth: The Viking Snuff appears to be a brand name for snuffs produced for My Smoking Shop in Preston, England. Of the five so far available I have picked up the plainer three and I must say I am impressed with them. No surprise really, as judging by the nature of these snuffs they are almost certainly made by Samuel Gawith. Viking Brown is a wonderful snuff, not a million miles removed from SG’s Kendal Brown. In fact I am pretty sure they are the same and that is no bad thing. It’s coarse, moist and dark and has a very satisfying orange/citrus flavouring. Prefect for hefty pinches all day long and a full five star rating Viking Dark has a finer grind than Viking Brown though the flavour is similar yet lighter. While I am pretty sure this is also made by Samuel Gawith (the design of the 25g tin is a bit of a give-away) I can’t think of a direct correlation between this and any of the SG branded snuffs. So, we have here a medium, plain, dark snuff made from good quality Virginia tobacco. Plain snuffs don’t get much better than this though to my nose Viking Brown has the edge. In appearance Viking Menthol looks a lot like Viking Brown. It’s coarse, moist and dark brown in colour, with the same flecks of lighter coloured stem material. The menthol has been applied with a light touch so in effect we’re dealing with a KB with a refreshing after taste. I rather like it!

While I agree with the descriptions of Viking Brown and Viking Dark, I see no connection between these and Taxi Red or its relative NTSU Black. The nicotine kick is not comparable. I believe you are a fellow Londoner, Khalid, so go to “NTSU giveaway in london” and you will find the address of a place in Wimbledon who are selling NTSU Black and other NTSU snuffs fairly cheap. I bought 2 sticks (24 cans) for around 28 GBP and its quite fresh.

I threw in a tin of Viking Dark in my usual order and I’m glad that I did. Despite the stupid name and logo (Viking helmets didn’t, I understand, have bull’s horns attached) this a wonderful snuff that puts the vast majority of snuffs available today to shame. No fancy perfumes here, just aromatic Virginian tobacco. . Highly recommended - I’ll certainly buy this one again.

PhilpS don’t forget we still haven’t seemed to remember that the greeks didn’t know everything. I wish I could remember which chronicler said the vikings had horns on their helms, but he was very wrong. If they did and didn’t learn how stupid that was fast they wouldn’t be remembered very well. Thanks for the reccomend.

As a bulk-buying heavy user of mostly coarse snuff (at least eight grams daily) I believed myself impervious to nicotine induced symptoms such as light-headedness. After several hours constant use this snuff delivers, to use current vernacular, a real nic-hit. The last time I experienced this feeling was in Morocco with a North African snuff, and that was decades ago. Opinions and experience vary and others may beg to differ, but in mine this is the strongest UK snuff available since the original Fribourg & Treyer’s Brown Rappee. I won‘t be using it as often as the flavour demands, unfortunately. The lovely natural aroma is also extremely strong. Even someone with anosmia must detect a flavour this pungent. Heady stuff to be sure.

I have just ordered a tin each of Brown and Dark. There is also a ‘Viking Virginia’ pipe tobacco I’m giving a go.

They present stranges blends on the section “rolling tobacco” on this link,Earth impact, isn’t too dangerous…? -) Anybody’s knows the taste of “Wild Lettuce” ,an important componant ? By an other way, this site présents some S.Gawith in 25g that my habitual solder(M%r Snuff) don’t purpose.

Wild lettuce gets you high. http://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lactuca\_virosa

nope wild lettuce doesn’t get you high. Not any more then chamomile does. Pretty similar effects.

Ok fair enough @bob. I was only going on hearsay. And the ever reliable Wikipedia.

i love wild lettuce. it’s great but you can’t make a party out of it. it does alter conciousness slightly but not recreationaly or in other words no euphoria. Though it does make you feel calmer and sleepier and it’s great for dealing with pain and has less contraindications then most pain killers. When asprine isn’t enough and morphine is a little too far I say pick some wild lettuce. you’ll also sleep well. It is also nutritious too and kind of good tasting if you like really bitter things. Oh no harm meant ratroom. Just speaking from experience. Side note when smoked on film it looks like tobacco smoke unlike tobacco smoke. So in movies that is what they are usaly smoking.

@bob I will have to give it a go for the pain killing properties. Due to an old leg injury I have to take fairly high doses of codein (60mg) regularly and I don’t always like the feeling it gives me. And it also can’t be that good for me. Thanks for the info. Back on topic though I just got some Viking brown and dark wow both great snuffs especially the brown. I like mysmoking shop Simon there is a really nice guy.

codiene is another form of opium used by medicine so it like alot of other prescibed pain meds can have bad side effects from overuse, or just become addictive even when not needed for pain, so yes try out some of the herbal type pain killers as the may help. i have to deal with this route often as my daily medication interacts poorly with most pain killers or decreases their effectiveness. as for the viking snuff it is a virginia leaf thus a promising higher nic content, i’d probly go for a sniff of The Viking Menthol on a nice winter’s day to take me back to the times of my viking ancesters, live on and pillage
