The Three Crests of Samuel Gawith

They are three. Triumvirate? Holy Three? Blessed Trinity? Yellow, blue and red Crest (we’re presuming plain varieties here; I’ve only seen the Blue in a scented version, which I’ve never tried). Here’s waht I think, quickly. Agree or disagree in a comment. If I am misinformed, educate me. Yeallow: Essentially an SP in terms of grind and moisture, but lacking in the typical citrus/bergamot. Blue Crest - Fluffy, light unscented tobacco, similar to WoS Irish Toast #21. Red Crest: Definitely a toast in both taste and texture. Some say similar to the Wilson’s Irish Dry Toast #22. I’ve only tried the Blue Crest from a tap box. It was fine; I quickly consumed it.

Hmm, from that description and the current love I feel for the good 22, Red Crest sound like something I’ll put on my next order! Yum.

Well again, I myself am not sure, as I haven’t yet sampled the Red Crest…that’s just what I’ve been told and/or read on retail websites. I go through phases. Lately, nothing appeals to me more than a solid, toasted tobacco with good nicotine and easy to take. The toasted tobacco aroma appeals to me. Last week it was SP’s, the week before that, F&T OP and Seville. LOL I just sampled Toque’s almond toast for the first time, and their natural toast as well. I think I suffer from S.V.P.I.D. (Snuff Variety Preferrence Indecision Disorder). Part of Snuff Psychosis (R)

I have red crest, grind and moisture wise it is not dissimilar to Viking dark. Its orange brown in colour and an sp in scent. I also get vanilla. Nicotine is medium. I like it but i wouldn’t call it a toast, at least not in the sense no 22 is.

I have all three and I like them very much. I haven’t had the scented blue, nor do I intend to. I’ve heard it is loaded with that (in)famous “Lakeland” scent, which I’m not a fan of. I don’t detect anything other than tobacco in any of them and I think the differences are in the make up of the tobacco “bill”. I get a big Red Virginia from Red Crest, Lemon Virginia from Yellow Crest, and until I see Blue Virginia I don’t know what the hell is in that one, but I like it in the unscented version. I don’t think any of them are as deeply toasted as the actual Toast Snuff genre, of which I do think USA Scotch is a sub-set. I do think that the tobaccos have undergone some post curing dry heat in a smoke free environment giving a subtle hint of toastiness and a wink and a nod to Dr. Maillard. Or as my Physics prof called him Dr. Mallard…30 years before NCIS hit the airwaves

Wilc, Cheief Daniel…thank you. As I said, I know these largely from retail descriptions, or maybe I was just confused. I am still sitting with the virgin vac tin of SG Gawith D-Light 16 inches from my fingertips. Someone remarked that they thought the Red Crest (don’t remember where I got this) was similar to the Irish D-Light. Uhh… help on that one?

@uncle_Squinty I have seen it in the product description review at snuffstore (UK), I think.

@Uncle_Squinty‌ I got a hair up my nose, so to speak, and mixed 50:50 of my Pure Virginia Toast and Flue Cured Virginia. The toasty notes added a depth that wasn’t there in the individual snuffs. Combined they were very close to Yellow Crest. SG D Light reminds me of a USA Scotch; it has a smoky note, perhaps from some Fire Cured in the recipe. Not a lot, just a seasoning. It’s good, but not in the same game as the Crests, IMO.

Maybe it´s just my nose, but the aroma of Red Crest reminds me of a mixture of some kind of wood and orange dry peel. Delicious…

I just got my first tin of SG Red Crest and was expecting all natural snuff, but what I have here is most certainly scented. The tin wasn’t in vacuum and had a plastic tape around the rim. I get a familiar whiff of tonka bean; a bit of vanilla like aroma, some sweet light milk chocolate, with something ever so slightly bitter, perhaps mandarin rind. Actually, the scent is very close to SG Bracken Flake pipe tobacco topping. Or as I remember it, I haven’t had any in a couple of years. I don’t detect any similarities to any toasts I’ve tried. The flour is nice and fluffy brown medium moist, finer side of medium grind. Very pleasant and easy to take. The mild tonquin aroma persist a good twenty minutes in the nose. This was completely different what I was expecting, but very nice snuff, nevertheless.

As well as the three Crests there are versions of the same with “Scented”. So for “yellow crest” there is also a “yellow crest scented” version.

Oh, I see. The tin label has just “RED CREST” on it. Mysmokingshop, where I got my tin, does list scented versions for Blue and Yellow Crest, but not for Red Crest. Hard to keep track with Sam Gawith’s endeavors sometimes.

Well, from Yellow Crest I get an almost Toque Quit scent, but not as fine, so possibly that’s slightly toasted, but the other two seem like regular snuffs to me - the Blue reminds me of a good quality cup of tea (like Twinings Everyday, if you’re in the UK), and the Red is similar to an Assam tea, malty, and rich. I like all three, but would probably stick with the Yellow and Blue when I need to replace. I would imagine they’re essentially tobacco bases for other scented snuffs, but don’t quote me on that cos I’m only guessing.
