The smokers', chewer's and snuff taker's companion, and tobacconists own book:

I just found what I consider to be a nice little gem of American Snuff-ana, which opens with this wondrous quote: " I do assert, and will affirm it before any living person to be the most sovereign and precious weed that ever the earth tendered for the use of man." - Ben Jonson. It is a curious collection of poetic praise and romantic idealism devoted to tobacco (should I say Tobacco) in often times euhemeristic pomp. I thought it was a delight to read all the 19th century clippings extolling the benefits of tobacco. As is stated in the subtitle: “Being the best Defence of Tobacco ever written, exposing many popular errors that now exist against its use ; and detailing its various BENEFICIAL EFFECTS” Hope you enjoy  P. 40 is where the snuff dedicated section begins. https://ia700501.us.archive.org/7/items/101144402.nlm.nih.gov/101144402.pdf

I found it interesting how they spell cigar as “segar”, very interesting.

I saw it! It said snuff for the eye! I SAW IT!

I saw it too! Page 43 I need more information on the subject! Google came back with nothing.

some snuff are supposed to have healing effects on the eyes when taken nasal. It used to be common to recommend certain snuffs to help with eye and vision problems. Probably worked to some degree or another too.

He describes “philosophers and literary men” going through “five large boxes a day”. That must mean at the absolute minimum 50-60g. Incredible…

I love these old books. I’ve been canvassing Google Books and have found many that I plan to post on this forum (however, I’m sure they’ve been posted before).
