To avoid dragging another thread too far off topic, I’ll just open this one.  I know @MikeMoose has played Chrono Trigger and enjoyed it.  Any other RPG fans in here?  I just beat the first Phantasy Star last Monday, probably going to fire up a game of Phantasy Star II sometime soon.  I’ve also got a 25% finished save of Shin Megami Tensei to move on in.  It might be an ugly game to look at, but it can be pretty interesting, and is supposed to have quite the storyline to it.  It spawned a whole series of games (Shin Megami Tensei and Persona series, amongst others) that have been of interest to me for a while, so I’d like to beat it and have the full back story first before I continue on to the others.  For the most part I stick to gamesthat were published on the original Play Station or earlier, as there haven’t been many since that have managed to suck me in like some of thos old ones do.  At any rate, not enough to justify buying a new console.  While Mike likes Chrono Trigger, I think my favourite RPG has to be Grandia.  It managed to have a solid 40-60 hours worth of gameplay, while avoiding making you do a ton of grinding to drag out the time some more.  Again, probably not much to look at, but it’s real fun to play, and more than makes up for it.  So, anyone else on here, or is it just Mike and I that like the RPGs?

D

I loved FFVII and FFIX (US), Legend of Mana, Okage Shadow King, Chrono Trigger, and some others when I was younger.  I just have a hard time getting into the grind these days.  Perhaps my tastes are just changing with age.

P

I love Grandia and still play it on occasion.  Not many RPGs have the playability of it (A shame really).

I much prefer having a table with maps, character sheets and dice though (I’m a grade A, old school dork)

:-"

B

lost odessy is awesome if you like old school.

M

AWW YEAH RPG’s!  Ahah woot!  I am a big fan.  I use to play Chrono Trigger a LOT .  Beat it too many times, but it is totally awesome, and totally re-playable.  I got into a game called Dransik awhile ago (aka Ashen Empires) .  Not bad either.

Big fan of The Elder Scroll series.  Morrowind was awesome, so was Oblivion…  Yet to try Skyrim!

Unfortunately, I haven’t played ANY Final Fantasy games…  And I should!  Because being the RPG fan that I am, I should really try one of them out .

Honestly, Super Mario RPG was actually pretty cool .

FABLE was an EXCELLENT RPG, as well as Fable II and Fable III

And now, for a really interesting Note…

I am working on making an RPG.  :D .  Been working on it for a LONG time…  Mostly because It’s just ME working on it, and also because I don’t have all the time and/or money in the world to be working on it 24/7 LOL .

My RPG is actually based on Fable.  If anyone remembers Jack of Blades from Fable I … ?   He is basically the main “Bad Guy”.  But in my RPG, he is the main character!  :-P .

I probably sound like a TOTAL Nerd, but Jack of Blades has been, and probably always will be, my most favorite Villain.  So I decided that since I liked him so much, I would create an RPG that revolved around him.  Honestly the graphics are shit…  It’s like a Nintendo or Super Nintendo style graphics, or Gameboy LOL .

But let me know what you think of this little post of mine, and maybe I’ll make my Demo downloadable from somewhere …  :)  :D

S

Sounds good to me, MikeMoose. I’m not a big RPG player, but I’m always interested in having a look at other peoples projects.

M

Puzzle games are a LOT of fun for sure.

@Spam : I’ll need to whip in a Demo CutOff though so don’t expect it to be up tonight, I’ll try my best though

P

Another Elder Scrolls series fan here.  I just got Skyrim, but I haven’t started playing it yet.  After having logged hundreds of hours in Oblivion, yet never finishing the main quest, I reckoned I ought to do that first.

The PC version of Fable was full of annoying bugs, but it was fun nevertheless.  Has Microsoft even bothered to port the sequels to PC?

I used to play pen-and-paper RPGs years ago, running a few campaigns/chronicles in AD&D, and in White Wolf’s (original) Vampire: The Masquerade.

S

@Pennanngalan:  I’m sure with a bit of googling for bestiary data and equipment lists, you could always knock up your own private pen and paper game of Grandia if you wanted to do your own quests like that.  That actually sounds like it could be some fun if you got creative with the quests you came up with.

Also, an action-RPG that’s supposed to be quite good, I’ve started another attempt at Landstalker.  As I recall, I enjoyed it, but always got stuck at some puzzle or another each time.

B

Hated the fable series still need to play 3 but found 2 really annoying. Too easy and too lacking in depths. Too many features that just don’t have enough flesh. Which means I could almost really really dig it. My first CRpg was phantasy star which blew my mind. Yes Call Of Cthulu is awesome and they made a video game based off of it which although it played like a third person shotter it was really a detective story game and was amazingly awesome. In one of my friends Call of Cthulu games someone based their character off of me and was the only player to survive (in part because of the opium, don’t ask too many questions there), Though Skyrim is awesome Skyrim is the reason I’ve barely been on here and wish real life would go away for a little bit. Also if you like RPGs play the latest bioware stuff because Mass Effect and Dragon Age are amazing series.

I

I’m a huge RPG fan. Have played and loved all mentioned in this thread Currently elder scrolls is my favorite series. I haven’t started skyrim yet because I honestly Believe my wife will leave me once I get sucked in. Lol but not joking

J

I’m not even allowed to think about it.

A

I thought this thread was about Rocket Propelled Grenades!

B

easy mistake to make. in fact the military makes the opposite mistake more often then you’d like to think. yeah they should bring the grenades instead they launch some D&D at the enemy.

N

Chrono Cross is my all time favorite RPG, followed closely by Chrono Trigger and Legend of Heroes: Tear of Vermillion.

There have been many others over the years as well…

M

@AllanH : Oh Allan, how we love thee :-P

J

RPG’s…probably my favorite genre. Played the original chrono trigger on my ol’ SNES, real classic, and also the DS. DS has housed many good RPG’s, the most recent I’ve played on DS was the latest Dragon Quest. I’ve also played the Shin Megami Tensei Devil Survivor @ shikitohno . Played Grandia on Dreamcast, loved it. I’ve played almost all final fantasy games, they are fun for traditional JRPG.

As for new school, I’m also a huge fan of Besthesda’s RPGs (the Elder Scrolls Series -  Fallout 3 - New Vegas), I got into Morrowind on the original xbox, then Oblivion on PC, now I’m also playing Skyrim (on PC) and I’m thoroughly enjoying it but it is a bit glitchy. I wish the map was a little more diverse (like Morrowinds) but its still good. If you like these games, then check out Fallout 3 and Fallout New Vegas. Very Similar, but futuristic-type post apocolyptic setting, great games.

When taking a break from Skyrim, I’m playing Zelda - Skyward Sword on my wii. Just picked up an hd 3dtv - it can convert 2d to 3d and it makes Zelda look really good. The sword combat is great!

S

If you played the Dreamcast release, you got Grandia II, which while not a bad game, is far less fun than the original was for me.  The original game was a Sega Saturn game at first, but it never got a Saturn release outside Japan.  There’s a part of me that’d really like to see one, just for the novelty of playing it in English “as-intended” with a Saturn controller and what not.  I’m still holding out a vague hope of seeing some sort of translation for Parallel Trippers, but it’s pretty unlikely at this point.

P

@jbruckus: From an article I read a few days ago, it sounds like your wish for more varied scenery will be fulfilled, eventually.  It seems an enterprising modder has discovered that the geography for the entire continent of Tamriel (and, I assume, the outlying islands as well) is already coded into Skyrim.  Can you say, “expansions galore”?  There, I knew you could.
B-)

D

skyrims a great game got it the day it came out on the ps3 over 79 hours so far and the dragons are still kicking my ass at level  36 , its a good thing you can cook your own food in this game as i need reminders to eat at some time its that good…

pot of tea some good snuffs and skyrim = happy time for me

@PipenSnusnSnuff : I like how that sounds!  ;)

J

@PipenSnusnSnuff -  I’m not surprised. They had a couple expansions for Oblivion, and many for the Fallout games. Also, some things seem like they weren’t properly finished in Skyrim. Like chopping/sawing wood for example, like they planned on doing more with it but never finished. Have you noticed others?

@shikitohno -  Grandia 2, yes. Did you own a Dreamcast? How about Shenmue? Loved that game. Way ahead of its time when it was released.

@dazz34 - I’m only about level 22 or so and I’m stuck on dragon fight. The thing persues me relentlessly. I even tried running away , jumping down a ravine into a river, letting the current take me away quickly and he blasts me underwater…lol. Some dragons seem much easier to kill than others, but I think its mostly about how well you can use your environment/surroundings. Like if there is no cover or anything to hide behind, it becomes very difficult to take one down.

@mikemoose -  I applaud your efforts. Its very difficult to create a game on your own. I wish I could contribute in some way.

B

@level 69 you can just stand there and throw spells at the drangon.

J

@bob - yeah, I imagine (like Oblivion, Morrowind, Fallout) that once your character gets to the high levels that you become a “jack-of-all-trades” of sorts and its actually hard for you to be killed by anything unless you’re not really trying to stay alive.

B

almost but no where near as bad. In fact just got killed. Doesn’t happen as much but…

B

actualy getting my ass kicked on the main quest. bandits are a joke though.

M

@jbruckus : If you would like to contribute in some way, maybe testing my Demo for me and giving me some criticism?  When I upload it and post the link here too I mean LOL, I still have too much going on at the moment to do anything.

P

@jbruckus: For both the Morrowind expansion packs, and for one of the Oblivion ones, Bethesda added geography that was not included in the original games.  Even then, it was only a section of Tamriel (or, in the case of Shivering Isle, a single plane of Oblivion).  But this is the first time they’ve given themselves such a massive amount of virtual space from the get-go.  It seems to me they must be planning to use the Skyrim engine for a long time to come.

S

Nope, never had a Dreamcast, though I’d like to grab one.  I played Grandia II on the PS2.  Decent game, but definitely a disappointment coming from the original.  Also, remembered the other day, I’ve got a Final Fantasy Tactics save to finish somewhere.  Played all the other PS1 Final Fantasies, so I figure I may as well finish the set.  I definitely think I would have hated this game as a kid, but I’m enjoying it for now.

J

@mikemoose - That sounds cool. Take your time with it. I look forward to the day I get to try it out!

@PipenSnusnSnuff - That sounds cool. Speaking of the Skyrim engine, I must admit I don’t see much of a difference between it and their last games. Part of me appreciates that they are building upon a good foundation because I do like the game engine and its nice that they are improving upon what they’ve done in the past (Where as some game series get shuffled from one studio to the next and certain installments may not resemble or play anything like the original or earlier installments) and the other part of me was, perhaps, expecting something different. I don’t see much difference between this and New Vegas, or Oblivion. They’ve added dual wielding, made it look a bit prettier, but the physics are still glitchy and unrealistic. Sometimes you bump into an object and it goes flying as if you punted it like a star football player lol

I have also encountered a game breaking glitch in the main story quest (my brother is also playing and said this didnt happen to him) where I had to keep reloading and old save and back track just to proceed. I finally got it to work but it took many reloads and was frustrating. Anbody else run into any serious glitches?

@shikitohno - If you like FF tactics, check out Knights in Nightmare. There was another great “tactical rpg” I played on DS not long ago but i can’t think of the title at this moment. Not sure what you’re preferred gaming system is but if you don;t own a DS, you can get them pretty cheap now that 3ds is out. It has one of the largest and most diverse game libraries of any system ever, well over 1,000 titles i believe.

B

get the updates man. It really helps with the bugs. And what can you expect from something so insanely huge. It’s amazing there aren’t more gltiches. I find the engine remarkably diffrent from the last one by so much.

J

@bob - don’t get me wrong. Love the series, and i really respect bethesda. As a long time gamer, I like to discuss these things with fellow gamers who know what they’re talking about. I’m not trying to be a harsh critic I just dont remember the last two entries being this glitchy and never had a game breaking glitch in either of them. I’m curious as to what you find remarkably different about it? I’ll have to get the updates.

If you are curious about the glitch, it had to do with the part of the main story where you have to enter the underground area of the one city and find that member of the blades (the guy who is very paranoid). I’d talk to him and when he spoke no audio came out but the text appeared. Even after choosing the correct phrases his door would not open. After reloading many times and back-tracking it worked by chance. I led him back to the woman and they would not talk to eachother so the mission wouldnt end. Had to exit the building, wait , save it, re-entered, and it worked. Have you had similar experiences?

B

man oblivion crashed way more for me. I got to the point of saving before entering certain areas. Have only had on glitch like that. Then again the up date really helped haven’t had any big glitches then.

B

then again I find it interesting the how it seems certain games crash and glitch more for certain people. I beat red dead without one glitch I’ve had games that no one complains about glitches crash chronicaly to the point of just giving up.

J

What are you playing Skyrim on? 360, PS3, PC? I played Morrowind on the original xbox. Oblivion and Skyrim on my PC. Red Dead is only on 360, right? Never played but heard great things. 95% of the time, PC games are more glitchy (which probably explains why mine seems more glitchy than yours if you’re playing the 360 version) because there are so many different hardware and software differences between various computers, whereas consoles are all the same. Yeah, in my experiences, almost every console game is going to run smoother than a pc game.

B

ah yeah 360

B

have to admit that I like dragon age 2 better. Especialy when played on the hard setting. It really makes you think about how to go into each combat which is way more fun.

S

I took a break from the RPGs this weekend, spent the last couple of days up in Troy, NY doing a weekend long birthday party for my friend up there.  Lots of fun to be had just having some drinks with friends and playing Super Mario World.  They’ve still got a working SNES up there, so we played quite a bit of it.  The other favourite there is Zelda, which I can’t say I like too much.  Anyone have an opinion of the Super Mario RPG, though?  I’ve been thinking of giving it a go for a while now.

J

Playing Skyrim on the 360 and loving it.  I still play Final Fantasy 2 and 3, secret of mana, crono trigger, earthbound, and secret of evermore on my super nintendo.  I’m a big fan of RPG games.  Bigger fan of FPS games though.  I never really could get into super mario RPG so the only opinion I have on it is… I’m not a fan.  heh

M

ZELDA: A LINK TO THE PAST

Awesome game.  Nuff said LOL .

I was actually over at a friends place on the weekend, we played some Donkey Kong Country on his SNES and sniffed some snuff.  Good combo!

S

My friend’s actually just beat Donkey Kong Country before we went over to his apartment.  Something about the Zelda games just doesn’t hook me, though.  Right now I’m stuck in an evil level on the first one.  I need to kill 8 or so blue Darknuts to advance, and even going in with full health and using my beam, the evil things kill me every time.

D

Link to the Past was an awesome Zelda, I think it may still be my favorite one.  My wife just bought me Zelda: Skyward Sword, but I haven’t given it a play yet.  I never really considered Zelda to be an RPG, but I enjoy them more than most RPGs.

I’m stunned that nobody mentioned any MMORPGs.  I started with Ultima Online on the original release day (WAY back when), I played that for eight years and really, really enjoyed it.  I hated FF XI, too much grind and bad times soloing imho.  I started playing World of Warcraft again after a couple years off.  They have really changed a lot, and I think the next expansion is going to cater to those of us who don’t live in a basement and have Blizzard plasma pumped directly into our veins.

M

The Zelda Series is more of an Adventure-Combat, not really an RPG at all…  But it is still great!

Ahhh yes MMORPG’s…  When I mentioned Dransik / Ashen Empires, THAT is an mmo .  To be honest I gave WoW a try…  Never grew on me LOL.  Glad I never got into it .  It’s just not my thing…  I really use to be into mmorpgs and just rpgs in general but I just don’t have the time for them anymore…

But…  SKYRIM…  THAT game I have time for, and it is AMAZING!

P

Skyrim players, check this out:  http://www.dragonshoutapp.com/

Already available for iOS, soon to be available for Android, too.

J

@shikitohno -  I love me some Super Mario World. The RPG’s (i played on DSi) are fun. As well as the super-paper-mario series which had installments on a few different nintendo consoles! I have a cousin living in Troy. I live about 2 1/2 hrs drive north of there. I like the newer Zeldas better. The last two they’ve made, Twilight Princess and Skyward Sword (still playing the latter) @Dogwalla - Definitely play some Skyward Sword when you get a chance. I’m enjoying it.

I used to be hooked on WoW. I had a level 72 mage in my prime. I stopped playing shortly after the Lich King expansion.  I got sick of paying for it every month. Wasn’t worth it to me. Still have a lot of friends playing it. Started playing a free mmorpg called Dragon Quest, pretty fun game. The combat is much better than WoW but I havent played that in a while now either.

S

Found out that I could get some older RPGs on my budget cell-phone (LG Cosmos II, for those it might help).  I’ve got Final Fantasy I and II on it at the moment.  And II is the real FFII, like in the Game Boy Advance Remakes.  It works okay, ad the music comes out nice if I put it on.  I’d rather be playing on a device with bigger controls, though.  Also, insane amounts of grinding are basically a requirement.  Though I suppose if you’re sitting at the train station with no other way to kill an hour, grinding would work nicely.

S

So later today I should be heading out and picking up a SNES.  I know about all the Final Fantasies and Chrono Trigger, but are there any lesser known gems for it that yo guys would recommend?  Apparently this place sells copies of Chrono Trigger for only $40 when they get it in stock.

S

I tried playing the Star Ocean ROM with the translation patch on it, but it was quite of spotty.  For example, item names just show up as gibberish characters.  May just have to buy a PSP to be able to play the official translation of that one…

I forgot about the Lufia’s though, I’ll have to look into them.

M

Lufia I and II, definitely good choices!

S

Unfortunately, I’ve got to do some testing once I can.  Either my TV is giving me issues, or I’ve been sold a bad console/cable.

M

I’m also an RPG guy. Only offline so far. So far between the have played, and the have but not yet played: Golden Sun 1 & 2, Shenmue 1, The Bards Tale, FF 1-5, FF 7 & 8, FF 10 & 12, Legend of Dragoon,  Tales of Destiny, Okage, Grandia 2, Y’s Ark of Napishtim & 7, Chrono Cross (or is it Chrono Trigger? forgot), 3 of the Breath of Fire’s, Lufia (on the GBA), Lunar (GBA), Valkyrie Profile Lenneth (psp), Legend of Heroes 1 & 3 (psp), Star Ocean 1 & 2 (psp), Jeanne d’ Arc (psp), phantasy star (psp), elder scrolls IV Oblivion (pc), etc…also a bunch on the Ipod Touch (seriously, they have some good ones now- and most are cheap).

I favor old school turn-based games, nothing played on a grid really. And some action-rpgs. But not so much a hybrid of the two styles.

Would like any reccomendations for such on the ps2, ps3, 3ds compatable, and pc…

nice to let my geekiness vent here!

H

oh darn, I was hoping to come in here and see some DnD or World of Darkness talk. Guess I’m just old fashioned for my age, lol.

B

dark souls is awesome. I have not touched Skyrim since playing that one. It’s old school in that you have to really learn to play it and it won’t cut you so much slack you can’t feel proud of making it through a new area. Plus it uses death well. It’s a reward in this game. Creepy creepy dark game too. The story is minimal and more ambient then usal. Which is perfect near hopelessness and desperation with a sliver of hope doesn’t need much explination. Seriously if you can dig hard games you’ll love this one. Though younger gamers are often too whiny to play a game that doesn’t wipe for you.

M

Dark souls is on which platform?

M

Still play D&D every other Sunday…

P

Wish I could get the group back together :-((

B

most of them

J

Dark souls is xbox and ps3.

I have it and Demon Souls on ps3.  I havent beat either.  But when I was into them I loved em.

Fallout 1,2,3,New Vegas.

Fallout 2 is AWESOME if you dont mind the graphics. It has very adult themes, alot of swearing, drugs, prostitutes. Guns with upgrades/attachments. Insane number of endings.  I still go back to this game every 3 years or so(and its from like 1997!)  The combat is turn based.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZSiZCU5SwBg&feature=related  mute your speakers first! crappy music ahead.

Starwars Knights of the Old republic 1 & 2. AKA KOTOR. Great RPGs,  I was never really into starwars at all, but when I played KOTOR I was like… this isnt that bad. KOTOR I think won game of the year in its time.

Oblivion was pretty cool, didnt get around to beating it. I will get skyrim eventually.

I mostly play battlefield 3 now…

B

Old school table top books, pen, paper and dice for me. I haven’t played in many years though. PC games fail to capture my imagination.

B

table top is the best. Though it’s a teenage hobby. Not because it isn’t awesome and still way enjoyable but because everyone has diffrent schedules.

J

I have no idea what those are.

have you ever read a choose your own adventure? I read a star trek one back in the day and I kept dying.

M

Harlequin : World of Darkness you say…  Vampire: The Masquerade - Bloodlines was a great PC Game.  One of my favorites.  Really awesome gameplay and storyline.  That, and V:TM - Requiem are the only ones I’ve played.  Never done the Pen&Paper style :-P

H

The computer games were fantastic, but even still I prefer the pen and paper version, at least the Old WoD. New WoD is just utter crap. And yes, Vampire was my favorite (Clan Tremere, to be specific), but Changeling the Dreaming and Werewolf come in tied for second.

M

Gangrel right here .  Favorite of the Clans.  Have you heard about the new World of Darkness MMO they are working on…?

H

MMO?! No but I’m looking it up now! lol

E

Pretty much anything bethesda are prepared to throw this way! Skyrim obsessed right now. I’m eraserhead78 on xbox live if there’s any other live people here

M

@Harlequin : I flipped out too .  Very excited to see and hear more about it

M

How many of these games cost you a fee to play online? My friend loved, I think it was Dragon Age 2 (on the PSN), but stopped online play when it just got too expensive.

M

I will only play online games if I am not charged.  I tried WoW awhile ago, and the whole pay-to-play thing bothered me, and so I stopped.  I’m hoping that the WoD MMO isn’t pay to play

P

I haven’t been on Snuffhouse much lately, because my home PC crashed just before New Year’s Eve, and the times I can access the site from my office PC are few and far between.

The good news (and what makes this post on-topic) is that my new PC is on order – an Alienware X51.  Once received, I should be able to play any game I choose, regardless of system requirements. I can’t wait!

D

@PipenSnusnSnuff  Pong will run like a scalded cat on that thing!

M

LOL

J

But will it blend?

H

They still make Alienware?! That in itself is news to me!

J

Dell bought them out.  Way cheaper to build your own with high end components

B

but easier to mess up

D

I haven’t had a new computer on ages…the awesome hardware I get to work on has spoiled me, and I don’t want to spend that kind of money on my own rig.  It’s hard to find that balance.

P

@JohnnyFriday:  Agreed, one can get a much better and cheaper rig by going the DIY route.  But then you’re stuck with having to fix it yourself, too, if something goes wrong.  A lot of us just don’t want to mess with all that.  For a casual gamer like me, the choice was obvious.  Your mileage may differ.

Besides, I’ve dreamed of owning an Alienware machine for years, but the price range was always way out of my reach.  Finally, they created an affordable line of gaming PCs with the X51 series.  The reviews at places like CDNet and PC Magazine have all been good, too – I haven’t seen any review yet with less than four out of five stars.

J

As long as you’re happy thats all that matters. I havent kept up with them, so I don’t know how expensive they are. They used to be insane.

About twice a year back in highschool my friends and I would make the most expensive system you could on their website.  It was easy to hit $7k.

I always thought they looked awesome too… but if you were in public with one of their laptops Im sure you’d look like a nerd.

Here’s my laptop I never use.  I seriously have used it less than 10 hours in 6 months.

Dell xps 17 3.2 ghz core i5 2520m, 4 gig ram, 17.3in FHD WLED AG (1920x1080), JBL 2.1 Speakers with Waves Maxx Audio 3 (it sounds awesome for a laptop), NVIDIA GeForce GT 555M. I was like 1,300 in June, now its like a grand.

M

@JohnnyFriday : Oh man, I love that shit.  WILL IT BLEND.  Crazy guy.  The lighters one was pretty funny lol

And by the way, nice laptop.  When I have some more money in the future I’m gonna look into getting one.  I got a pretty good desktop, but I’d love the portability.

J

Mine has like no portability.  It gets like 1 1/2 hour battery life unplugged.  I need a netbook or something.

S

Having gone the Alienware route in the past, I’m just going to build my own in the future.  If you don’t want to build your own, just grab a decent middle of the road desktop for $500-$700.  The Alienware premium (in my opinion) is nice for the first 6 months, before you see people getting comparable machines for half what you paid or less.  Of course, even the DIY route doesn’t offer the same sort of discounts it once did.  On the upside though, by putting it all together myself, I can avoid paying the Microsoft tax, and I can guarantee all my hardware will be linux compatible.  Nothing worse then spending $1200 or more on some machine, getting it, and realising it’s got a goofball sound card that has a broken driver in linux.  Or that there’s no functioning network driver for you NIC, and you’re left completely unable to connect to the internet with your shiny new $1200 door stop.

M

I prefer the DIY route as well :-P

J

PC gaming is inherently expensive, and the only way to offset that cost compared to console gaming is to basically pirate a lot of games instead of paying for ROM media. I never had the money for a really good machine.  I suppose I could have gotten a pretty decent desktop as opposed to the laptop I got… but spilled milk you know.

The DIY route can be fun.  For laughs (well, I think I might be able to do it soon), I put together a desktop on Newegg, just to see what it’d cost.  Minus any random cables that I made need to buy, depending on who packs them in, it comes to a grand total of $1225.60, including 3 day shipping and before any mail-in rebates.  And I could easily get this down to about $700 if I wanted to, as I probably don’t really need that 120GB SSD for my OS partition, or a soundcard that can do 24-bit/192KHz audio and 7.1 surround out of my computer. But it’s a device that costs about $500 more than a middle of the road pre-fab machine, will last me for a good 5 years before it really starts showing its age, and it’ll serve multiple purposes.  I’ve got an HD monitor already, and a combo CD/DVD/HD-DVD/Bluray drive, so it becomes an automatic media center.  Over time, adding another 24GB of RAM until I max out the motherboard’s capability will mitigate some of the aging issues.  Still, even if you’re not terribly technically inclined, it’s not hard to go through newegg or some other site and put together a machine, and be certain all your components will work together.  When you pick a case, it’ll tell you in th technical details section “This case has X number of slots for drives, can support Y form factors for the motherboard,” and such.  You get to your motherboard, make sure it’s Y form factor.  It’ll tell you in the motherboard’s page “This board supports Z type of CPU sockets, and the following variety of connections for other hardware.”  Make sure to pick a CPU with that type of socket.  Make sure when you add your video card, it’s a variety of PCI card that’ll hook up to your motherboard.

It can be just like any other sort of project if you think about it properly.    You pick your first component, and build up from there.  If you’re working on installing a new sink and you know that the pipes leading up to your taps have a certain dimesion, you look for something that’ll connect to, say 1/2" pipes rather than 3" ones.  The only difference is, instead of 1/2" or 3", you get terms like ATX motherboards, PCI Express 2.0 x16, or AMD FM1 CPUs.  Also, a good chunk of hardware comes with warranties by the manufacturor.  If you’ve built your own computer and your shiny, new 8 core monstrosity of a CPU craps out after 6 months, chances are pretty good you can call up AMD or Intel, and get a new one sent out.  If you’ve got a pre-built machine that you bring in to a computer shop, you’re paying for parts that you probably could have got for free under your warranty, plus $40/hr or more for someone to do something that you could learn how to do in all of a half hour, with the help of a couple quick youtube tutorials.  Whether or not you actually want to is a different matter entirely, but I think a lot of people over-estimate the difficulty of computer repair.  A lot of it is just googling, “Have a computer doing such and such,” or “Error message ‘Oymyakon is cold as hell, you broke something’” and following instructions.  Usually, smarter people than you or I have run into the same problem before, and have written up an explanation of what it means, as well as step by step instructions for how to fix it.

H

since this is the rpg thread, I would just like to say that I’m replaying FFVII and just got through Disk 1 in 26 hours and that’s getting both Yuffie and Vincent, no walkthroughs.

M

I’ve got FFVII and VIII, and have heard mixed reviews about FFIX. Has anyone played it? Is it worthwhile?

M

Quite an excellent post @shikitohno .  I love reading though that stuff, I speak the language :-P

As for RPG’s, haven’t worked on mine in awhile, but I really want to get it Demo ready so I can upload to MegaUpload or something and post the link here for people to test :-P

I

Xenogear from PS1 era is a must play~  For PS2, the first Xenosaga game is another good choice (Xenosaga II really sucks, the third game is better but not as great as the first Xenosaga game)

Recently, there have been a lot of great RPGs for PS3 as well. I just finished playing Dark Souls and Mass Effect 2. Both games are AWESOME!

B

I’d play that mike

Dark souls is great. Really old school in the way that you have to figure out what you are doing. I reccomend not looking up info online as it kills some of the specialness. though that guy that eats items makes me happy.

H

I have heard nothing but amazing things about Dark Souls. I’m starting to think I should give it a go if I can ever afford it o.<

J

That guy who eats items wouldnt talk to me. so I attacked him and he disappeared.  I looked it up online, and I was pissed.

You guys use ps3?

PSN ID: JohnnyFriday

M

Excellent!  Then I will make a working Demo this weekend when I have time and I will do the whole Upload thing.  I’d love to hear Criticizm and Feedback regarding my game.  The graphics are nothing special, something you’d see in Gameboy LOL .  If you have ever played Fable 1, then it’ll be a LOT easier for you to understand.  My games story is based around Jack of Blades, the villain from Fable 1 .  He is my favorite game villain of all time, and I thought I would make a game in tribute to the awesome character.  I am very pleased with it so far, and I would love to continue to work on it, if I had more time lol.

M

Yeah I’m running a PS3, also never got rid of the PS2. I’ve got the first Xenosaga, and another, don’t recall which. I’ll check out Dark Souls and ME2 sometime. My friend raves about Dragon Age 2, but is that more action-rpg’ish? I gotta get Skyrim and see what all the buzz is about. Also I’m wondering if games like the Elder Scrolls are better on a PC or PS3…

MikeMoose- I’d do some beta testing if I can learn how to download it and stuff (I’m kind of a PC/Windows newbie)

S

@Mr. O: I really enjoyed playing FFIX.  Most of the complaints I heard about it were people who didn’t like the return to the less than realistic roots of the series in terms of character design and such, after FFVII and FFVIII were becoming progressively more and more realistic in terms of character and world designs.  IX returned more to the fantasy origins of the series, and that pissed a fair few people off for some reason.  This may be a bit controversial amongst PS1 RPG afficianados, but IX was my favourite of the PS1 Final Fantasies.  Granted, I haven’t finished Tactics, but they’re different varieties of game anyway.

F

@MrO  If you have a top-spec pc then go for the pc version of Skyrim.  I personally prefer the ps3 version.  Only bad thing on pc is that the controls are geared more towards the consoles.

J

@FlippinBird  Does your ps3 have problems with large save files on skyrim? For me, all bethesda ps3 games have problems in the later stages of games when the save files are large it starts to get very slow and sometimes freeze.

M

Thank’s for your input guys! What about some of the (relatively) more obscure PS1, PS2 titles? Saga Frontier, Tales of Destiny, Theads of Fate (more action/platformer rpg I guess), etc.

P

@FlippinBird:  For those of us that prefer the PC, one can pick up a console-type controller for PC without spending very much, which solves the problem of console-oriented control interfaces.  I bought a Logitech Rumble F510 gamepad from Amazon for about $35.  It’s perfect for Skyrim.

B

farming hint in Dark Souls. The guy that eats items gives you 100 souls per most items he eats some of these items can be bought for 10 souls you can carry 99 of this item. Just saying farming isn’t as dangerous as you’d think once you have access the tooth monster (that’s what I call him).

L

Not really single player mmos, but I play SWTOR and EQ2.

F

@johnnyfriday After this latest patch 1.4 i think.  I have had no problems, it actually runs more smoothly than in  the previous patch.

on a side note, I have been playing Breath of Death VII, it’s old school/final fantasy nes graphics and play style.  It is also quite funny, the game likes to make fun of other rpgs.

M

So, will anybody enlighten me about Steam? Or anything else valuable for PC gaming?

J

My dark souls farming spot was the bonfire you break into in the forest.  Well the door right next to the bonfire, there are like 3 hard enemies, but if you run in a quick circle they will follow you and you can stand on this cliff and they will climb above you and jump to their deaths for I think 3k souls each. That really changed my game as it was a total byatch to get any souls.

B

did that too. Now in the painting damn it’s tough there. But fun.

I

ahh, what can I say about soul farming in Dark Souls but that it provides hours of fun (not)~ Skyrim is a fantastic game too, sadly the feeling of not hitting the enemy dampens the fun a bit…

On the other hand, Mass Effect 3 is coming this March 6th! Can’t wait until I get my hands on it~~

B

Skyrim how is that you are so joyfull and surpass my expectations and yet at the same time disapoint so much. Oh by the way also plays Tales of Vesperia which is suprisingly awesome. It’s the first action J-rpg I’ve played that holds up on all fronts. Usally in most the combat is overly complicated and boring. Most have the following effect Wow check out what my dude can do even though I can sleep through 90 percent of the combat. It also does the story right. You don’t spend so much time in the cut scenes that you think mother funker when am I going to get to play again.

D

Did anyone do the 1 Year WoW subscription to get the free Diablo 3?  I did!  I’m also so damn obsessed with the new Diablo coming out that I ordered a new PC with an i7 2600.  Diablo, Warcraft, and Unreal Tournament have been responsible for my PC upgrades since the original Warcraft hit.  It’s just a sickness.  I may fight TAD, but I embrace Diablo Upgrade Disorder!

L

I am kinda on the fence about Diablo 3 on one hand it is great to see the franchise growing, but I am afraid of what the younger player may have done to the entire genre. I have been playing rpgs since D&D 2nd Ed. As far as computer rpgs go, I kinda stopped after Oblivion and I am waiting for Skyrim to get a little cheaper( or my brother in law to give of to me because he is done with it )

P

@ Mr. O:  I’m not sure what you want to know about Steam. From what I can tell, it seems to offer a wide variety of games.  I’ve only had a membership for a short time, as I got it when I bought Skyrim, which requires a Steam account.  Steam seems to have frequent sales, so I imagine that, with a little patience, one can get good deals on new games.  They also keep your games up to date with patches and DLC, which is a nice feature.

As with anything else, however, it pays to shop around and compare prices.  I’ve noted that a couple of the games I’ve had my eye on are available from other sources at a lower price.  I wouldn’t recommend using Steam as one’s only source for games.

D

@PipeSnusnSnuff The main advantages I have found to Steam are these:  Usually decent pricing, Steam Cloud which saves your game for use across multiple systems, and access to all platform clients no matter which version you bought.  For example: I bought Civ 5 for PC, and when i registered it with Steam it also gave me access to the Mac client, and my save games are always up to date no matter which system I decide to play on.  Not all games have these features, but it’s pretty darn cool when they do.  Amazon also has some really good deals on games too.  if you want to camp for some of the best deals out there, the DealsModo section of the Gawker Network of sites has some rockin’ deals on a regular basis.  It’s worth checking out on a daily basis.

M

Thank’s folks! It’s just that I’d only heard about Steam maybe 3/4 months ago and just kinda wondered if I need a “Steam for dummys” or if there’s not that much to learn. Didn’t know if it’s some kind of big “game changer/life changer” or just more of a basic service or hub or what not.  So far I’ve only got a couple of  PC games, PoPersia, Elder Scrolls Oblivion Game of the year ed. So I’m very much a newbie here.

Another question, has anybody ever bought a PC game controller that (apparently) just wasn’t compatible with one’s games? In my case a logitech. Now I wonder if I should go for the Xbox 360-PC controller.

S

I can’t imagine there’s a controller out there that’s totally incompatible.  Even if it says “Requires Windows 7,” it’s typically a load of crap.  I’ve got a usb controller that looks like an Xbox pad with the analog stick positioning of a Playstation on that was allegedly only compatible with Windows.  Works perfectly fine with Arch linux without using their crap install CD.  I use it for when I play games on emulators so I can have a proper controller, rather than mucking about with my keyboard.  It’s seen much less use since I got my PS2 back from a friend and picked up an FC Twin.

It’s just a matter of getting your computer to acknowledge it as an input device.  Typically for Windows, this means installing the drivers.  For linux and BSDs it would involve configuring it as an X11 input device.  This often happens automagically, or in some cases you’ll need to modifying the relevant config files by hands.  Don’t know what the process would be for Macs, as I never touch the things.  Once your computer recognizes it as an input device, if you’ve got a game that provides custom control mapping, you should be able to select a control option in that menu, press the button you desire to be mapped to that particular button, and it should change the control to that option for you.  Repeat until all options are mapped, and you should be all set.  If you encounter issues with getting your computer to recognize it as an input device, often searching “Device Model foo and ${Your OS}” on google will lead you to people who’ve already solved the issue for you.

I really need to give my FC Twin some more use.  The guy who runs the local retro game store (seems to make most of its money as an internet cafe and selling new games, but it stocks all sorts of old games) recommended it to me since it does NES/SNES games.  He also told me Yobo was putting out a new model in the near future that would play those two consoles’ games, plus N64 games, which would be cool.  Looking on amazon, that one hasn’t materialized yet, but there appears to be a NES/SNES/Genesis system out by them, for anyone who would prefer using a real console with a proper controller, rather than playing ROMs.  I may well purchase a copy of Chrono Trigger this month, if I’ve got the money.  Those machines can be handy if you have a bunch of old games floating around, and your consoles either got sold off or don’t work.  Looking at their wiki page, some games seem to not work properly with them.  The SNES Dragon Warriors and Super Ghosts and Ghouls seem prominent on that list, along with Super Mario RPG.

Of course, for those of you with a Wii, you can do all this already, with your Virtual Console.  Which reminds me, I need to head over to my friend’s house and finish playing Beyond Oasis.

D

I got cheap and went for a 3rd party XBOX controller and I love it.  It’s great for Console -> PC ports, and it’s even better if you run any emulators at all.  If you have bluetooth on your system, you can also use a PS3 controller.  I like those better, but the only computer I have with Bluetooth is my mac, which is old and sucks eggs for most games.

M

Hmm I’ll have to read all that slowly and carefully… If I recall, I went through a calibration(if that’s the right term) process, also I think it was the kind of deal where it includes a mini rom disc, but for some reason it just didn’t work right- I think it worked for one of my games but not the other two. All I know off the top of my head here is that I’m on an hp dv7-4080us notebook with windows 7 and a intel i7 proc. I don’t know if it has any bluetooth function for sure, but I don’t think so. I should take a remedial PC class anyways- a lot of computer talk goes over my head. But my gut decision is to probably buy the usb xbox controller and take it from there, bummed I lost the receipt from the other one.

D

My new computer shipped almost a week early, and should be here on Friday! *nerdgasm*

If that thing won’t run Zork, nothing will.

P

I’ve got a Logitech controller that was recognized by Windows 7 without any problems whatsoever.  You may want to go to the Logitech web site and see if they have an updated driver for your controller.  That may very well solve your compatibility issues.

T

There probably is some kind of fix for it, that would save you from having to buy another one.

But the PC Xbox360 controller is brilliant. When I bought a new laptop I decided to give some games a go, and that’s perfect. It’s so much more comfortable than a keyboard, and it’s compatible with all games that accept controllers - it’s made by Microsoft for Windows so game designers make it with that controller in mind when they’re designing their games that why when you sometimes have top change it to ‘controller’ on the menu screen it has a picture of the Xbox controller. Just plug it in and go.

M

Thank’s guys! I’ll probably just take the plunge, I think I like the looks of the xbox one anyways.

M

Anybody going to buy a PS Vita?

S

I am WAY old school, the last RPG I played was Dungeons & Dragons, with books, dice & pencils and paper

C

Been playing Skyrim lately on my 360, my favorite RPG yet. Always been a fan of all the Bethesda rpg’s. Being able to become a werewolf is a pretty fun addition from just only a vampire like oblivion. And not to mention, killing dragons heh

M

SnuffSniffer, I only played on paper once with some older friends, but maybe could have or still could get into it. But I’ve liked some on the PS1, PS2, PSP, Gameboy Advance etc.

Captain Snuff, I’ve got to get that on my PS3!

J

Ive been playing SIlent Hill Downpour, not an RPG but fun none the less. Next Ill be on the Silent Hill HD remastering of 2&3.

M

Is that on PC or a console?

B

though captain this time around the vampire option is hugely disapointing and annoying. You don’t feel very vampire like. My things regen slower and my stats suck more barely (and not noticably) wow at night I’ve got better stealth? Nope feels more like being a night person who just prefers the dark cause they feel better then.

P

I took a break from Skyrim for a bit, and have been playing Dragon Age: Origins Ultimate Edition.  Great story, but I’ve had a hard time adjusting to the game mechanics.  Four characters just doesn’t seem enough to form a well-rounded party, and the approval-disapproval system for party members is confusing.  Yet despite the frustrations, it’s enjoyable enough to keep me coming back for more.

W

One RPG that I love is Etrian Odessey on the DS. It’s v v v old school, you have to draw your own maps and basically see if you can get to the bottom of the labyrinth. It is punishingly difficult and takes a lot of time to level up, but if you don’t mind grinding for literally days at a time, you’ll like it. You get out of this game what you put in, and when you have mapped a full level there is a real sense of achievement, a very niche market game but well worth it IMO.

Stefan

B

dragon age combat is great. It’s kind of hard to figure out at first. Once you get the swing of it and get higher levels it’s easy to make several balanced parties. It’s just a little trickier.

M

Stefan- I’ll have to look for that, I played the old FF games for the GBA, a handy thing to have…

W

@Mr.O it is well worth it if you like an 80’s style rpg, but like I say it is v v v difficult, as one reviewer on amazon said it’s like the game thinks, “well you haven’t died for couple of hours so now you will”. Somebody mentioned Chrono Trigger above. I started playing it last night for the 1st time ever, I didn’t get to bed till 7 this morning that’s how good I found it, bloody brilliant.

Stefan

M

Stefan. Yeah, I love the old turn based games, with just enough strategy, not the ones played on a grid etc., not where you must use perfect timing to get a critical hit. So anything like that I’d probably try and like. Are you brutally punished for dying? Just curious… I believe I mentioned Chrono Cross/Chrono Trigger, I’ve got one or the other, and a few other PS1 games that I haven’t really gotten very far into yet, such as Legend of Dragoon… Some of them I might be willing to part with once finished, if there’s one you’ve been looking for let me know, maybe I’ll have an available copy.

W

Sounds good, Mr O. You’re not brutally punished for dying on Etrian Odessey, but you can only save your data in town or at a Geomagnetic Field point, (the 1st one is on the 6th floor, and believe me it takes 15hrs+ to get there and survive), so it is a bit limiting, but you can always use a warp wire if you get a bit low, to take you back to town and save. Like I say it’s a v v v niche market but if you liked 80’s RPG’s where you had to draw on graph paper it’ll be up your street. It is certainly a blast from the past, but at least you can draw your maps on the touch screen :-). I’ve also downloaded the sequels off of a certain legalish site and have yet to play them, but I believe they work on the same premise, so I’m looking forward to trying them.

Stefan

M

Stefan, Cool! I’ll write that name down so I can look for it at the local used game shop.

P

Tales Of Phantasia (SNES) -> Killer!!!
