I saw this news review on the BBC site a couple days ago, a pub up-north was selling the stuff in the bar working on winning back smokers after the ban. It got me thinking, any suggestions on the tipping-point for when our nanny state will think “right, we can make money from this” how much of the population would need snuff in order for a big tax hit?uptake in snuff
Interesting article (and loads of poor comments there). Well, it did rise in popularity the last 2 years, significantly. Still, compared to other forms of tobacco use, it´s totally insignificant, even here in Germany where it really is quite popular. If it keeps rising, like in the past 2 years though, it could catch the attention of the government in maybe 10 years from now. But this depends on how the small tobacco shops can manage to survive that long, also.
I wouldn’t be too worried, because at the moment, snuff accounts for less than 1% of tobacco sales worldwide, if I remember correctly. Unless someone famous starts doing it, it’ll be a hard sell for people. Think of how many other things go up your nose. No how many of them won’t get you prosecuted in the UK (or the US or the rest of Europe, for that matter)? That seems to be people’s main objection. Guilt by association, if it goes up your nose, it must be bad for you. I’d think snus has a better chance of becoming popular, because it’s already used in a way people are comfortable with tobacco being used. Overall, I’d think governments would start raising taxes once it hit around 10% or so of the population having tried it. I left my own comment after reading it. @Geri: You’re obviously speaking from ignorance, dear. Snuff comes in a variety of colours, ranging from pale tan, to black. Cocaine is white. I think the barman can tell the difference. Also, cokeheads can’t stop talking, and start fights. Snuff users take a pinch, and go back to quietly talking with their mates and having a pint. As a snuff user myself (oh, how vile, I use tobacco!), I can say it’s not likely to catch on. You can hardly use it outside if there’s any breeze. Most people seem to think you’re doing drugs, as well. Why they think this, I haven’t the least clue. It does go up you nose, yes. But it’s not the white powder of cocaine or MDMA, and it hasn’t got the effects you’ll notice in people who (and this is a minority amongst users) choose to snort heroin. You whine and moan if I use cigarettes in your vicinity, and seek to ban anything else I choose to use. Hate to break it to you, but in the UK, tobacco is a legal product. If I’m of age, I can use it if I so choose. Some people like their tobacco, and have no interest in quitting. If you dislike second hand smoke, I suggest you leave me to enjoy my tobacco in a form that’s less damaging to your health. Otherwise, I’ll just go back to smoking, and make a pointed habit of blowing smoke in your face when I see you anti-tobacco nuts about. Regardless of what I do, you lot seem intent on demonising me, so I may as well do whatever makes me laugh the most at you. I’m old enough to make the decision, and can legally purchase them. I’m also aware of the risks to my health. We’ve all got our vices, so it’d be wise of the anti-tobacco nuts to quietly accept what I choose to do when it’s not hurting them. Otherwise, we can always find out your vice. It wouldn’t be nice of us to find something you like that damages your health, and seek to have it banned, now would it? Wonder if they’ll put it up?
that was the wrong link, this is the video link Not sure if you can view it outside the UK Red Star shikitohno,Comment. Now, that’s funny. Class, proper class as your in the UK i think you know how the BBC works if they don’t agree with you. “Impartial” they couldn’t spell it. I might go into town tomorrow and snuff under a camera just for fun, see how long it takes for plod to turn up
Actually, not even from the UK. I’m familiar with the workings of the BBC, however. It’s my preferred news source, as even with it’s onesidedness, much better than anything here in the US. Sometimes, I think I give off a certain Britishness online sometimes, but I blame that on my flatmate from Hong Kong. Can’t speak like a proper American now, after a summer of British cinema/television, and living with him. He’s always watching some British drama series, and I like the comedy shows. Black Adder, and In The Loop/The Thick of It. Wrecked my ability to talk/spell like a proper merkin, hence the flavour and colours you’ll see pepper my posts. B3ta simply killed what was left to my Americanisms. Now I have to filter what I say to most people here, to avoid a funny look at calling someone mate.
Good old BBC allowed me to watch it. There are quite some similar BBC clips about this and I presume they made the basically same clip for different regional branches of the BBC (other reporters, other pubs, but just the same issue). About the comments there, well… it´s basically the same here, no matter what happens in the world, as nice or disgusting as it may be, there are 10 times more (anti tobacco) reader´s comments in our local newspaper as soon as another article about smoking is published there. Hysterical, really. For sure I would like the idea of them caring honestly about the health or lives of their fellow men, but we all know the truth, don´t we. They should rather start donating blood than wasting their time and energy by making popular, yet foolish comments about tobacco.
@Red Star: Tell those health nazis to go donate blood, why, that’s a capital idea! But I fear it’ll take more than that to shut them up. The sheer arrogance and ignorance in their comments on the site is astonishing.
It was an event unnoticed by most, but when the Customs and Excise duty was removed from snuff tobacco on 1 January 1978 snuffers celebrated. (Snuff had already become cheaper in Britain when the Chancellor removed the ad valorem duty several years before.) The last time tobacco products were duty free in England was during the reign of Elizabeth I. It should be noted that the decision regarding duty was based on the outcome of EU funded medical research - an outcome quite different from the allegations claimed by Jean King on the BBC site. Snuff will be taxed when revenues justify the cost of implementation, whereupon ‘new’ medical evidence that contradicts the original research will be provided by ‘The Scientific Committee on Emerging and Newly Identified Health Risks’ (SCENIHR) on request from the EU Commission. As for the BBC don’t expect unbiased or even factual reporting. For example the Redcar steelworks on Teesside recently folded up - a truly massive blow for Britain’s already enfeebled manufacturing industry. The parent company (Tata since just 2007) took advantage of the EU’s gravy train ( Emissions Trading Scheme) to close Britain’s plant for in exchange for lucrative ’carbon credits’ which are expected to be worth £1.2 billion quite soon. No mention of the double-dealing that ended a 300 year manufacturing tradition was ever made by the BBC. This was nothing less than shameful bias by omission.
What like most of all about snuffhouse is each one of you… I enjoy how everyone has a piece of history or fact about all kinds of topics… You are all the most pleasant, most well rounded group of individuals ever to meet in one place… I can say as one who has partaken in the hobby of snuff for almost half my adult life and was limited by the choices offered by purveyors… The joy of having an outlet to acquire other snuffs by the many manufacturers has been delightful… However apprehensions soon set in when i found so many people were picking up the hobby… My first thoughts were that it would again aspire to a level that would increased ‘TAXES’ and 'DUTIES" making more costly… But after finding snuffhouse my apprehensions were quickly dissolved… I like to see people being able to quit the dependence of cigarettes among other things… Now i am not anti smoking I believe people have the right to do as they please even if its not the most healthy of hobbies… I have enjoyed the videos of the rookies who review the products… I also am not a Pokemon collector of snuff, occasionally I will buy a snuff I have never tried just for fun… In short thanks to everyone who contributes in educating me=)
