There was an “only one snuff” thread I read a few days ago. It got me thinking. It seems like most people who use snuff like at least some variety and that their tastes change a lot over time. It’s certainly true for me. To my amazement, I’m finding Toque Quit losing its allure a lot over the past few weeks. I thought it was the love of my life. When I first tried De Kralingse Latakia AO 1860, I thought it was fantastic. Now I’m thinking of dumping the remains because it’s filling up a snuff box I could use for other purposes. When I smoked a pipe, I liked Cornell and Diehl Tuggle Hall or, in a pinch, Dunhill 965. Out of a sense of duty, I did try other tobaccos, but those were the two that I was happy with. I really thought I was going to be like that with snuff, too. But no. I wonder what it is about snuff that makes people so fickle and need so much variety?
Maybe it’s not the snuff that makes people so fickle as you assert. Maybe snuff users are just “fickle” by nature. Obvious;y, they aren’t afraid to try new things. I could also ask, what is it about most cig smokers and dippers that makes them refuse to explore? I would have included pipe smokers in that category as well, but I think a lot of the pipe smokers under 60, DO try new blends. My great-grand father ONLY smoked Prince Albert.
I get board and need my variety, funny you mentioned Latakia AO 1860, I had just got some out and hydrated it will lemon rind and it took on a whole new dimension. I am going to hit it hard then give it a rest, Next time I may try with a different citrus or some fresh herb to spice it up.It is nice to visit an old friend now and again I guess it is true about; too much of a good thing.
… and hydrated it will lemon rind and it took on a whole new dimension.
Does the lemon peel hydration thing add much of a citrus scent? That could be interesting. Maybe I’ll have a go at blending. Maybe it would go well with Toque Violet, which has a strong enough scent that it could do with a bit of dilution. Maybe the trick is not to overdo one snuff. I can’t imagine ever getting sick of Dholakia White, but I have to say, after a day of almost puritanical minimalism, when I carried but a single box, other snuffs do taste very good. And by the same token, if I haven’t had the DW all day, it sure tastes good when I come back to it. Still, I never got bored with Tuggle Hall pipe tobacco. Quite often, when I smoked another tobacco, I regretted the time wasted that I could have been with the TH. The other issue with changing tastes is that when I first try a new snuff, I often can’t catch the scent of it. When I first started using snuff, and it was only 7 months ago, I couldn’t tell the difference between Toque Spanish Gem and Toque Violet in my nose. Amazing to think of that now.
When I started snuff I thought that, like with cigs, most people would have a favourite type and my buying lots of different kinds was a sure sign I was a newbie–I hadn’t found my brand and type yet. Snuffers, though, clearly like variety.
I think the buying many different kinds will slack off a little as you do find some favorites. I’m still trying to find my favorites…
Variety is the spice of life!
Variety is the spice of life!
No, that’s cardamom you’re thinking of. lol
Even when I was smoking cigs I smoked different brands because I liked to change it up, and I still hardly ever buy the same flavor of dip twice in a row. With snuff I love the fact that I can change it up depending on what I want, be it something strong, mild, easy on the nose, a strong burn, heavily scented or none at all. I have my go-to snuffs but I get bored easily if I am forced to stick with just a certain kind of anything. I can’t even decide if I like pepsi or coke more lol
Can’t live without my Dholakia White.
Can’t live without my Dholakia White.
but you see, i dont think you could live with only your dholakia white either
@JakartaBoy Yes. I only used the outside yellow part. If you use the white rind the moisture level is elevated. depending on how dry your snuff is, overnight the yellow slices get as brittle as potato chips. Talking potatoes. if no scent is require a slice or small piece of potato will hydrate snuff nicely .good to hydrate pipe tobacco also
I find that if I switch up during parts of the day the flavors seem to last longer but that’s probably just psychological— dunno… but that’s my take on it… Like basement_shaman, simply put, sometimes I just get bored with one and need a switch, then come back later… And I have to agree that cardamom IS the spice of life, ha… Ah, I shall also use this potato technique with some rather dry SG smoke I’ve in right now… Hadn’t noticed when I bought the tin at JR that the lid had popped-- still smokes okay but obviously QUICK BURN LOL— gotta love that Tonkin bean hit— I would’ve just taken it back for exchange but it was the last tin
Perhaps it is because the nose can detect & remember dozens of times more essences than the tongue can…?
