The Need for Exotic, Leathery, Earthy, Sawmill-type of Snuff

I am finding a very heavy craving for a snuff that is leathery and earthy or anything in between.  I’m a colossal fan of the F&T HDT and F&T Santo Domingo.  What other snuffs are similar to the aforementioned.  A strong nicotine hit is preferable but not required; moreover, there’s no preference to any sort of grind. The only thing I want to avoid are flowery, soapy, and overpowering fruity scents.  Are there any suggestions out there?

Go to MR Snuff. Look in the category of Samuel Gawith,  Click on 25g. Order one of each. Order as many non-sweet American scotches as you like. That would be a great start IMHO.

The most leathery, earthy snuff I’ve ever had is SG London Brown, just make sure you get the tin and stay the hell away from the tap boxes.

I love my santo domingo, and can thoroughly recommend SG KB Original.

Gawith Hoggarth Kendal Brown as well as the Samuel Gawith Kendal Browns (I don’t know about the scented variety) are highly recommended.  Bernard’s Gekachelter Virginie is also very good.  For the saw-mill…SG McCombie would work well.

I highly recommend SG Black Rappee. It’s got a sort of creosote-y aspect to it (but in the best possible way, if that makes any sense). I gather Scotch Black and London Brown are both in a similar vein and it’s taking all I’ve got to not pop my tins yet; the Rappee is that good. (Bit of a nuissance to take though, as I’m sure you’ve read elsewhere. Requires some finesse. But that can be fun too.) Nicotine, note, is more in the moderate range for the BR.

The blue and red Taxis and NTSU are very natural, bran-grind snuffs. Barnyard is the best description I’ve read for taste (again, in the best possible sense of barnyard). Good nicotine kick here.

And Molens Latakia Ao 1860 is a smoky delight, with good nicotine as well. Not certain if it’s actually latakia that’s used, but what a treat.

Toasts were my favourite until I found the above.

I’ll just add: Gawith Hoggarth’s Kendal Brown is very leathery and has a great texture when kept moist. My only complaint is that it’s a little light in the nicotine department. For my tastes anyway.

Toque Quit, Toque Natural, and Sparrow Green would be some choices on the lighter side, Holandse Bolongaro is another nice natural one. That, I would put in the bran category of grind size, Ludwig Sternecker’s schmalzlers are also on the “plain” side although by no means should they be called plain.

Get a Schmalzler for yourself.

Yes, I for myself more and more become a fan of the SG snuffs like London Brown and the Kendal Brown range because of there earthy and leathery character. Also the Viking Brown and Viking Dark are highly recommendable.

Incredible is the speed in which you’ve all responded.  I thought I would’ve had to wait at least a week or so to get some responses to mobilize a snuff order to slake my yearning for leathery, old-world snuff, many thanks to all.

@Zanaspus   I’ve had many, many American Scotches in my time and have narrowed down my personal collection to Levi Garrett, Square, and Rooster.  Unfortunately for me, the craving from within is one of those which beckons a mystery snuff along the lines of a Santo Domingo-ish character.  It’s almost as if I know it’s out there somewhere, as if it were a dream snuff from a previous incarnation just waiting to be rediscovered.  The Samuel Gawith is the road I will explore in the yellow wood.

@N9InchNails   I will order SG London Brown for sure.  Oh, and for sure, I’ll stay away from those dehydration devices they call tap boxes.

@TallJim   &   @Pennanngalan     SG Kendall Brown is certainly going to be on the order list as well.

@Pennanngalan   You just reminded me that I have this snuff!  I had to pull it out of deep storage. Not only did I fill my new PC box with it, but I also filled my nose with it, too!  So, thanks for that.  I completely agree, the Gekachelter Virginie is a brilliant snuff.  Ok, SG McCombie is another to add to the list, as I’ve never had that before.

@Screwtape  LOL!!  “Creosote-y”  LOL!!  SG Black Rappee, Scotch Black, London Brown, Molens Latakia Ao 1860 are on the list now, too.  NTSU (yellow tin) is now in my nose along with the Bernard’s Gekachelter Virginie; I’m sensing a highly customized snuff cocktail coming into the picture.  Wow… that’s a great little number that…

@Juxtaposer   &   @HowdyDave   Dholakia Sparrow Green, Holandse Bolongaro and Lugwig Sternnecker are now on the list (I have the other Toques on-hand).  Toques have turned me off recently due to the length of flavor, but I must say, I am definitely a schmalzler guy after meals and an hour or so before bed. Love it, love it, absolutely love it…

@Uwe  Viking Brown and Dark are also on my list now as well.

Ok, so far I’ve got the following on the to order list:

  • SG London Brown

- SG Kendall Brown

- SG McCombie

- SG Black Rappee

  • SG Scotch Black

- Molens Latakia Ao 1860

- Dholakia Sparrow Green

- Ludwig Sternnecker

- Viking Brown

- Viking Dark

  • F&T Old Paris

  • Bernard’s Fienster Kownoer

Oh, this looks promising; I’m really excited.  Although, I may have to put in this order next month (16 days from now, hee…hee…) after my wife lets me back into the house for blowing three hundred plus bones on snuff boxes and accessories.  Till then, I’m going to explore and R&D this NTSU & Gekachelter Virginie combo I’ve just stumbled upon.  Many thanks and keep them coming.  I’m all ears if there are any more similar suggestions out there on leathery, sawmilly, old-worldly, lumberyard-y, earthy, Havana-y, Egyptian Library-y, great-great-great-grandfather’s-pipe-den scented snuffs.  I’ll certainly add them to next months list of euphoric elation.

Sparrow Green is Dholakia, not Toque

I’d have to go to the blending room.  Try SG Scotch Black, Princes Special (F&T) (for the exotic, leather) and Molen’s AP Snuiff for the woodwork effect.

Creosote-y goodness.

Everyone’ll be sick of me going on about Black Rappee, but the stuff’s really been a revelation. (Don’t get your expectations too high though–it requires a little getting used to, as most good things do.) Lately I’ve been getting a good base of BR then chasing it with some of the Latakia Ao. Oh baby.

Bernard has a few that fit the bill.  The names escape me at the moment but they definitely fit your description!

F&T Old Paris has a great leathery pong.

@KebAMP   Oh yes, cheers.  I’ve made the edit on the Toque error.

@Joesnuffer

Bernard’s Gekachelter Virginie is incredible in my opinion.  It’s a coarse grind with odd grains of what looks like sparkling crystalline sand!  There’s an initial burn, but it eases into a relaxing sensation of leathery something… a sort of very subtle, and I do mean subtle floral scent.  That’s what I’ve been picking up lately anyway.  I’ve been chasing bumps of NTSU to give it an earthy, tobacco mask to overshadow the floral, but my nose has been warped from the Levi Garrett that I’ve been snuffing in the past months.

@TallJim   Old Paris is going on the list. I’ve been eyeballing that label for a while now.

@Screwtape

I don’t mind anyone who goes on and on about their favorite snuffs, moreover, where else better to do so than on this Snuffhouse thread?  I’ve been going on and on about my desire for a snuff I’ve never even had!  LOL!  Who knows, perhaps then I could join you after I get a chance to try the Black Rappee myself. Then maybe we could create a thread entitled, “The Eternal Black Rappee Rant.”  Regardless, I’ll keep my expectations realistic and experience it for what it is.  Snuff is such an acquired hobby, and I’d never hold a grudge of any kind against anyone for suggesting a snuff that I wind up not preferring.  Just to experience a novel flavor is, to me at least, an extraordinary pleasure.

Cheers @Schnoz. I do hope you enjoy it.

Santo Domingo

Did anyone mention Bernard’s Fienster Kownoer. Now that is one not to miss.
