The Golden Leaf in Minneapolis

If anyone is in the Minneapolis area I highly recommend this tobacco store. The other big one in the yellow pages, Lewis Pipe, is pretty much just pipe tobacco (though they have tins of Fribourg & Treyer pipe tobacco, which I’d never seen). Golden Leaf has a great selection of cigarettes (I found Chesterfields and English Ovals there after much searching in strip mall tobacco shops), Oliver Twist varieties I’ve never seen, and a nice glass case full of snuff. They have lots of Toque snuff, and I even found some Dholakia White. Not as good as the online snuff stores, but it’s great if you’re looking for more than snuff.

I think this is the first example I’ve ever read on here in 3 1/2 years, that a US tobaconists has anything other than Poschl or US brands. At last an enlightened US tobacconists I hope more follow suit. Stefan

At least US tobacconists carry Poschl and scotches all I can find in Canada is McC Sp, and Menthol. If not for the internet snuffing in Canada would be very boring.

Iwan Ries & Co. in Chicago carries Dean Swift, Dholakia (incl. FUBAR & QWS), F&T, Toque, G&H, McChrystal’s and some Poschls. Not the whole line of each brand, but a few flavors of each. That’s about the best snuff selection for a US tobacconist that I’ve run across so far.

I second that about iwanries.com in Chicago, dealt with them a couple of times before the PACT deadline took holt.

Thanks for the report Mike. I can’t wait to get to MN and check it out.

Christ where do you live in Canada? Im down in Windsor, Ontario and can’t find a single gram in this hellhole. Please tell me you know of some stores in Toronto, I am going there next week and would love nothing more than to pick some up. Heres hoping n9inchnails reads this message!!

I’ll third Iwan Ries…went there in person last month. Very helpful and friendly. Even let me try a pinch of a snuff before I bought a case (tap boxes, you know how they can be) just to make sure that it was fresh. It was quite fresh and delicious. Excellent pipe tobacco selection, to boot, although I did not care for Comrade Daley’s oppressive taxes, it was most nice of Iwan Ries to absorb 5% of the blow on tobacco products.

The one thing that the Golden Leaf didn’t have is scotches. I also went into three strip mall tobacco stores in the suburbs (Shakopee, etc.), and all of them carry W.E. Garrett. One had a full box of 12 pocket cans that looked pretty dusty. I asked who bought the Garrett snuff, the answer was a unanimous “mostly old ladies”. I was surprised to see evidence of scotch snuff use as far north as Minnesota–all of the reading I’d done suggested that it was a regional habit of the Southeastern states.

That’s really interesting about the “mostly old ladies”. There’s still quite a bit of talk and belief that there must be a few old ladies still using it orally in the south, appalachia, and the central midwest. But for three shops in the upper midwest, that’s really kinda surprising. Yet, nothing is really very surprising. Nevertheless, it must be really hush-hush … and that is interesting. edited: possible old lady emigres from other regions, too.
