A few nights ago, I revisited my tin of Toque Grapefruit, and it seemed kind of bland. I thought it was just me, so I blew my nose and forgot about it. Last night I noticed it again! Just to make sure I pinched some right away this morning, and it seems that my Grapefruit’s flavor is completely gone! Its not a big deal, since it tastes just like Toque Natural now, but has anyone else encountered this problem before?
I thought that the Grapefruit was very subtle to begin with. Did you leave it in front of a window, or in a hot car?
I mentioned this when I first bought Toque and a lot of people took offense. Roderick is a great person and it takes a great company to admit such instances occur. When I had St Clements I was amazed, but 2 days later… wet dog. Needless to say I chunked the tin Grapefruit… was wonderful but lasa, it now smells like the metal tin it comes in with no grapefruit aroma. This doesnt reflect on it being bad snuff, it just loses aroma fast.
Thanks gentlemen. Cstokes4, I’ve carried it in my pocket all day a few times, but I never leave my tobacco products in the car as the Western Nebraska climate destroys them quickly. I’ll keep that in mind though, Roderick, It was very good when it was fresh…but as I said its still enjoyable. I’m glad to hear that T&M lasts forever, though I suspect I’ll deplete my tin quickly. Edit: I agree with Grim, I think Toque is an extraordinary company, and I’ll no doubt re order the Grapefruit, and try St. Clements despite this “wet dog” aroma I keep hearing about!
Maybe it’s all in my mind, but sometimes I take a snuff that seems to have lost it’s initial vibrancy, and pour it into a bowl, and stir it around a bit, and then put it back in the can, and it seems to make it better.
Sawdust would have been something.
especially a nice pine sawdust…lol @Roderick… do you think nletting the St. Clements or Grapefruit air out … say a day… help lessen the wet dog/ aluminum can smell or would the only option be to put it in say a snuff box??? St. Clements is soooo wonderful but i lost faith in it because of that. If i had could have 1 snuff it would be st clements as long as it was day fresh.
It’s funny the way things go with snuff. I have some St Clements sitting in a Taxi “tin” (plastic box) for months already plus a 25g tin sitting in a steel drawer. Both are still frresh as the day I received it. I also have a 10g tin of Grapefruit which is kept in a wooden box (not airtight) and it’s also still in excellent condition. And my dogs are dry. Humidity in my house is between 50 and 75 % due to our climate and living at the edge of the Atlantic ocean but it does not effect my snuff in any way. Or maybe it does effect my goodies in a positive way because I never suffer from dried out snuff.
I promise mister Claassen that it wasnt dried out. It was damn good when I received it, I loved it. It reminded me of my childhood. Memories that i cant put faces to but times that actually happened im sure. But if you look back, say um 6 months ago or such, I posted about it turning on me. It went from a nice citrus flavor to wet dog. I really really loved St. Clements. I had a 25 G tin of it and actually still own that same tin, but its not near as good as it once was. I love toque, Roderick has helped me in so many ways. My nic intake has been cut down, my gums arent sore anymore and god snuff is fun. Roderick makes a damn good snuff and introduces noobs to a great new school aroma in an old school way. The grind is not too fine nor is it too wet, like poschls, its just right. But something about some of the flavors are a lil off. They either change or dont last long at all. I love my Cherry Menthol and my Original, but the scent doesnt last long at all which is ok because i just re0sniff… but the toasts sure do linger…lol. Roderick, keep up the great work as im looking very much toward July… HURRY!!!
Sorry, Roderick, after reading my last post it comes off kinda arrogant. What I meant to say is you have a fan for life but some scents I love just dont last long at all.
Someone mentioned F&T Old Paris on here. It is great, so maybe you did get sawdust in mistake.
@ midnightmosesuk: I think you must have got a duff tin, or that it was totally dried out. OP has a very distinctive scent. I’d try another tin if I were you - you’re definitely missing out on a great snuff there.
Try a 200g bag or the like of the Toque flavor you like. I have experienced the flavor is richer in a big bag and I love the “just from the factory” taste of the freshest snuff. Or maybe I am just snuffing too much…
I’ve noticed some people just don’t pick up certain scents maybe you just don’t have the right nose for OP
In defense of the OP I must say its not that hes not experienced enough, bu tthat his sense of smell is different, as is mine. People gave St. Lements a huge thumbs up and Grapefruit, so I ordered both, The St. Clements was as advertised but a few days later, … wet dog. People got pissed off at me thinking I was talking bad about toque. But it really was delicious until it reached a turning point, but thats me. Same may be true for the OP in this thread. As ive stated, Toque makes damn good snuff and I enjoy it daily, but some flavors just disappear for some ppl.
Personally, those are my two favorite fruit snuffs from Toque. I just took a pinch of Grapefruit that I bought a month ago in a large tin. Still fresh, still grapefruity still a good snuff. I am taking a pinch right now of the St. Clements, and also it is in the large tin, and also a month later it still has the same flavor as when I first got it. The only thing I can say about the lost scent thing is that some Toque tins just do not seal or close quite right. I have always loved the concept of the Toque tins, I just wish they were more consistant. Every once in awhile I get a tin that just does not close solidly, twists past the stopping point or what not and just does not seal right. I would assume that is the problem there.
I occasionally snuff a snuff of various brands, and maybe it’s my nose at a certain time, but it’s like I snuffed nothing, meaning no flavor I discern at all. Personally, when I snuff a snuff, and I like to know I snuffed a snuff. Like Toque snuffs a lot too, though like all brands, some of their flavors I like more than others. I love their Natural, and Quit, and Whisky and Honey… and others. Some I didn’t take to, like Grapefruit… I found it too “acidic”? Anyway, my sinus have been bothering me, I think I need to take a few days off snuff really. But just now I did some Toque Rose, bear in mind, my nose has been been slightly congested off and on for a few days, and I didn’t get any flavor from it. After a few minutes after blowing my nose, I did some Dholakia Ganga, which I believe is Rose scented, and I did get the flavor from that. I prefer a stronger scent. A few snuffs are too weak, like some recent ones I got, De Kralengse Macuba, and F&T Seville… maybe it’s my nose condition, and I’ll try them again, but they seemed very weak. My plan this week is not snuff at all m-f(when I get home that night I will). But that may change really, as if I feel my sinuses have cleared before, I may. I love the snuff experince, but my nose sometimes gives me some grief. Though yesterday I didn’t snuff at all most of the day, and was feelin’ good and snuffed McC S’nuff, and that was good.
Tom, of the snuffs I have, about 30 so far, The two you specifically mentioned as being weak: De Kralingse Macuba and F&T Seville, I would not consider these weak-scented at ALL. In fact, they have some of the best staying power of any I have tried to date… I think perhaps it’s your nose. They’re both pretty intense.
I m using hot water vapor to bring dehydrated Toque snuff in a perfect condition again. I boil some water, remove the pot from the stove, put a cup into it, place a open snuff tin onto the cup, and a lid on the pot. After one minute I take the snuff out of the cup… if necessary i repeat the procedure. The result is very good… and using the snuff whilst its warm is extra tasty.
didi, That sounds like an excellent instant method. I’ll have to try that. I have some Lat1860 that is dry as a bone, and makes me sneeze sneeze sneeze. I’ve been meaning to re-hydrate, but been impatient. Your method sounds like it works almost instantly. Does it change the flavor at all?
I’d think you could rehydrate just by bringing it in with you when taking a really hot shower. I’ve done that with other plant materials, with good results.
Bringing this thread back on topic, ha I have decided to try and rehydrate the Toque Grapefruit and St. Clemants with the old paper towel in a box trick. After only a few hours the grapefruit already seems to be getting its flavor back. Maybe the tins I got from Tom were older. Makes me wonder what would happen to my tins of Toque original and Spanish gem if gave them a little hydration too…
I have to say that with Toque flavors I prefer to keep bulk amounts on hand and only decant small amounts, that way I get the freshest taste. Still prefer the freshness of a new tin taste, without the ammonia. Hit em young and hard!
