The First Sniff

So… Is it just me, or was anyone else nose “raw” feeling after sniffing snuff all day for their first time :stuck_out_tongue: . Maybe I wipe the bugger too often with my hanky lol.

I blew my nose too much when I started–wait till you really have to blow your nose.

Lol oh I’ve already seen the lovely brown mess it produces :stuck_out_tongue:

It will leather up soon, it is rough starting out. Hang in there, I started with Poschls and damn near died from being stuffed up.

Excellent advice from Mike B. I used to blow my nose constantly, convinced for some reason that it was the right thing to do. Let your nose tell you when it wants to be blown. It knows better than you do.

I suffered badly with a sore nose for the first month or two as well. I too started with Poschl’s (which I also believe make great beginner snuffs). I firmly believe one’s nostrils take a little time to harden up when you first start out - just hang in there.

I never blow my nose to be honest. I did when first starting out, but I think that just inflames your sinuses and clogs you up, not to mention the soreness. I just snuff all day then clean my nose out in the shower.

To be honest, it’s getting easier already :stuck_out_tongue: . Loving the Tom Buck, cannot wait to receive my F&T’s !! . Yeah the shower works really well to clean the nostrils. And as Brute said… The Nose Knows! :stuck_out_tongue:

I blew my nose a lot starting out, now I rarely do it. Snuffing gets easier and more comfortable. I used to get a little irritated with some of the US scotches; now I snuff them constantly. I do recommend a regular neti pot session — something I learned about on this very forum!

What is a neti pot session…?

There is more info on this forum if you search around, but a neti pot is very similar to a tea pot and used to clean the nasal passages with saline solution. It works very well. I got mine at Pharmasave for about $20.

Oh wow, that sounds pretty damn useful! I’ll look around here on the forum, thanks!

I dont use a netipot i use the neilmed sinus rinse. Its pretty much the same idea but its in a bottle and you squeeze it to push the saline through.

My nasal rinse recipe (it works good for me) is 3 parts kosher salt and 1 part baking soda, mix it real good, add 1/2 teaspoon of the mixture to 8 ounces of warm water for a …session. It’s very refreshing, with health benefits for all, even non-snuffers. Like Brandasaur, I like the NeilMed bottle… but NeilMed, to me, is a bit too proud of their salt packets.

Hmmm… I don’t understand how some of you can snuff all day without blowing your nose. My nose automatically starts running the second I introduce snuff into the nostril. I ALWAYS have to blow within 10 minutes or I will have thin brown mucus literally dripping out of my nose. Been snuffing for a year and a half, mostly toasts, but every snuff makes my nose act the same. I know my technique is good, as I get virtually no throat drip while snuffing.

I know you are apparently not suppose to do this… But sometimes after I have sniffed the snuff, later on my nose will begin to run, I usually just sniff it back… Sometimes it goes to the back of the throat. The irritation isn’t really too bad at all. But it probably isn’t too healthy lol

When my nose runs too, I just wipe it and sniff it back lightly.

Only certain ones cause me to run badly enough that I would drip openly if I didn’t blow my nose, and with those I do blow my nose afterward. For the most part though I usually don’t have to or I sniff it back like MikeMoose said and often expectorate it with a good old fashioned “huck-tooey” (provided I am outdoors of course or in range of a cuspidor!)

Is it necessary to spit it? I usually just swallow. And coffee goes great with it! . (I just realized… That probably sounds horrible… Now someone has a chance to put this on the out-of-context page… Oh boy lol)
