The difference between s snuff box and a pill box.

So I wanted to have a nice looking snuff box. But I guess I thought if I’ll go on eBay I’ll find a bargain or two. Now once you start you can’t stop and you end up with some thing’s. I’ll post some pics. The one to the right is so tiny you can even fit your nose close to it. And forget about a pinch. It was posted on eBay next to a us quarter. Its as small as a dime. #2 the one that is almost closed I bought locally. Small psid $20 a few years ago. Its perfect if you don’t want to make s scene. Perfect for a pinch and you could keep plenty in there. Number 3 is also from eBay it could be its for snuff. But I need to have it repaired before I test it. It dosnt click shut. And it was in the description. Do I need to figure it out #4 I think is defiantly not for snuff. I tried it, snuff leaks out. Its a pill box. #5 (two bottom pics) could probably be used for a whole tin of snuff. But this thing is very big. For sure not something to carry around. I might go to a silver dealer and see what I could get for it. What’s the most you’d pay for s silver snuff box. Of course it depends what your getting but for a basic one? I don’t think I over paid for any of these besides the tiny one. Might be a rip off.

While purpose built snuff boxes are made, the reality is that you can use anything you choose as a container for your snuff. Case in point- I use recycled Silver Dollar Snuff tap boxes at the moment. I find them to be handy as they fit right in the pocket and it keeps my snuff where it belongs until I tab a bit onto the back of my hand or into the boxcar. I have also used other snuff cans and tap boxes the same way- consider it green snuffing. As for how much I would pay for a silver snuff box- I suppose that depends on how much money I have on hand and my mood at the time. Just be mindful that on EBay you have to rely on the seller, their honesty and knowledge of what they have.

Well, you CAN use all sorts of improvised containers as good snuff containers. But a lot of silver boxes are atrocious for that purpose. One: not airtight; two: snuff clogs up the hinges. Either of these = not fit for purpose.

@Friendlyman - I think that this all comes down to fitness for purpose. I reckon the thing here that defines it as being a snuff box rather than a pill case is the seal; Pill boxes don’t need to seal as pills wouldn’t spill out! As @SgtJon says, eBay can be a little fraught in this respect, as it’s often difficult to tell from a couple of photos on the listing. I have a 18 century imitation tortoise shell paper mache box that is definitely a purpose made snuff box, (its lovely) but is un-useable because it doesn’t shut tight, not that you would have guessed from the listing :frowning: Many sellers consider any small antique box is fine to list as a snuff box. I have several antique boxes but I don’t pay a lot for them at most around the £60/$100 mark. I think that if they work OK and you like the design/style then you buy according to your means. They are nice things to have and if you don’t spend over the odds you can generally sell them for what you pay for them or more.

@MisterPaul I agree, that’s what I thought. in the worst case I have some nice silver

The difference between a snuffbox and a pillbox is: What do you put into your box – pills or snuff? Someplace like e-bay, snuffboxes are older. Since most people are not familiar with snuff, calling something a pillbox makes it more marketable.

@howdydave you see. And I thought the other way around. Who uses a pill box? I haven’t heard of it until I went on ebay. Now a snuff box might be something I could need. So if you write snuff/Pill they leaver it to you to figure out.

Pill boxes were quite common, not so much any more having been replaced by labeled, divided and durable plastic containers for those who must take medications while out of the house. I have seen some that are divided by the day and some that can accommodate multiple pills in each little space. Look around any druggist shop and you are sure to see them by the reading glasses.

@SgtJon‌ of course I know about those plastic pill boxes they are very common. I don’t think I’ll find a silver one in the drug store?
