I take Omeprazole each morning to prevent heartburn. In the bottle of pills is a small cannister of silica gel to absorb moisture. I realized yeasterday that the cannister can be popped open an the contents removed, leaving a small empty container with holes in each end specifically designed to allow water vapor to pass through. I rinsed one out and placed some moist cotton wool inside, and put it in a container of dried-out SP. Lo and behold, this morning the snuff was perfectly hydrated and almost as good as new! Obviously this won’t replace the Tonka bean as a flavoring agent, but as a rehydrating device it works great, just like the Tonka bean did in the olden days. I don’t have a photo of the canister, but here’s a link to a site that sells them: http://www.silicagelpackets.com/1-gram-silica-gel-canister-food-spices-pharmaceuticals-prevent-spoilage.html Obviously, they come free with many medications, so don’t throw them away! Because the canister comes full of silica gel, you have to prise the lid off with a knife the first time, as the gel stops you from compressing the canister. Once the gel is removed, you can remove the lid simply by squeezing the sides of the canister.

Kinda off topic but…My last MRSNUFF order had 3 small silica packs in it…anyone else see that I MS boxes ?

Silica gel does strike me as a bit of an odd thing to include in a shipment of snuff…

Best off picking up a humidifier disc from a tobacco shop or online, for 1$ you can’t beat it, clay encased in aerated metal case.

How big is your snuff box?! All the humidifier discs I’ve seen have been over an inch in diameter- way too big to fit in my snuff boxes, and the holes are huge. This idea is essentially a small version of those discs, sized to fit in smaller boxes. My canister is only about half an inch tall, and the holes are tiny.

@doctorbeat Good idea. Try with a drop of rum or whisky or root beer and see if you can hydrate and flavor at the same time.

D

Excellent idea, except for the root beer

Neat idea but rinse that container well and don’t breathe any of the dust or get it in your snuff… Silicosis is quite nasty

Yes indeed, I washed mine thorougly and so should anyone who does this. About time for an update: It’s still working great to keep my work snuff box humid. Even though the ends are partially submerged in snuff, none has got into the holes because they are so small. It works great!
