I’m used to taking pinches of Pöschl snuffs throughout the day, which in itself is a wonderful thing. When I switch to something like Tom Buck or Kendal Brown, I get an intense burning sensation in my nose for a good 5-8 seconds. What’s the deal? Since I don’t exactly want to torture myself, I’d like to know if this eventually stops happening? Some snuffs burn more intensely and longer than others, and incidentally, some of those are the best ones. It would be a huge disappointment if I had to give those snuffs up.
They are just stronger, finer snuffs. The longer you use them, the more you’ll like them and the less they’ll burn. Hell, even American Scotches don’t hit me really hard like they used to.
I feel almost no burn at this point. Use to feel a lot of burn. It should stop happening eventualy.
Yes, my burn tolderance has increased a lot too.
Good to know. Are there any fine snuffs that burn less, so I at least can ease into it rather than run my head against the wall, which is what it sometimes feels like with Molens A/P
All of the finer, stronger snuffs will burn if you are only used to Poschl, but will decrease exponentialy with use. There are no short cut type snuffs although some will burn more than others = so SP’s, eg Tom Buck, will be easier than Irish Toasts. You are just as well to stick with the Tom Buck/Wilson varieties or the Toques (avoiding the toasts for the moment) as they all have about the same type of grind and strength to build up your tolerance. You might find something like the Toque vanilla a good way of getting into that general type of snuff - it will still burn compared to a Poschl but the vanilla mellows it out a touch.
I think that some of Wilson’s fine snuffs are pretty mild. Prime Minister comes to mind. I used to loathe US snuffs due to the burn factor, now I can take them with no problem, except when the super fine snuff hits the back of my throat and makes me cough.
Thanks for the info, guys. Just knowing that the burning will decrease over time has made me want to order 3 x 10 of those 10 gram sampler tins from Roderick and snuff the heck out of my nose. Alas, I will have to wait till payday.
Try some schmalzers. Also have one from Bernard here called Offennbacher Kostlich, very smooth. Jaxons Toffee is very easy going, and Freybourg & Treyer’s Princes Special is very course cut and nicotine strong. Gawith Hoggarth Fleurette and English Rose also seem nice and soft. QWS smokers blend is very potent and also large cut, just don’t get it in the back of your throat. Hope these suggestions help.
Good to know. I’ll see what snuffstore has for me
I just ordered a bunch of the Bernard Schmalzlers from Snuff Store. From everything I read, they are pretty easy going.
Molens Prins Regent, is a rather fine snuff that I get little to no burn from. It’s got the most wonderful aroma as well. I would highly recommend it. It seems not very many snuffs give me a really good burn anymore which is nice most of the time, but occasionally I want a good burn to go with my snuff.
If it’s sp types your looking for Wilsons of sharrows “Best Dark” is a very moist dark sp type snuff with little to no burn. And also i’m suprised nobody else mentioned it but don’t be in too much of a hurry to get past the “burn stage” because as many will tell you once it’s gone you actually kind of miss it.
My snuffstore shopping list is getting … long … I’ll be eating ramen noodles after my next paycheck arrives.
I hear you, slartie. I had to restrain myself, hell, I always have to restrain myself.
Slartie, I know what you are talking about. But, enjoy that “after burn” as long as you can, you’re gonna miss it, once it’s gone!! I actually look for snuffs now which give an after glow because I really enjoy it. I have some SoW Best Dark up my nose right now, very nice but it leaves no “visiting card”!
I’ll take your word for it Pieter I just had a pinch of F&T HDT. Not as big a burn from that one as I had feared.
All the gawith hoggarth snufs i have had gave me a burn
manjul slartie try manjul. It actualy burns a tad worse then some of the other finer snuffs but because of the clove numbing effect the burn doesn’t last for far too long.
Or Sparrow or Kamal… talk about a burn.
