Taking snuff on an aircraft (UK)

I’m flying Ryanair soon (first holiday for years) and of course I’ll be taking a supply of snuff. As airport security is so tight nowadays I was wondering what is people’s experience of carrying snuff on to an aircraft? I’m thinking that I’ll keep the snuff in the original tin. Has anyone experienced any issues?

@Thunderbird - Nice to see you’re still around  No: I’ve flown international and internal, snuffed happily in the airport, and whilst in flight and never had any issues at all. Funny enough on my last trip to Mexico they did get the snuff bag out as they searched my hand luggage due to the presence of some hair oil business that my wife had omitted to mention that she’d put in there “What this?” say customs security man “tobacco” say I, “thank you, have a good journey” says customs man

Thanks buddy.

I was fine traveling to Spain last year, had some in hold luggage and one tin on my person. Try and stick to labeled, and don’t send a metal tin through the detector in your pocket haha.

Over the years I’ve taken large quantities of snuff on various airlines, including Ryanair, and, beyond a quick inspection, had no problems whatsoever. It may, though, indeed be wise to stick to labelled containers just to avoid “confusion”. Enjoy your trip.

Thanks again.

@Thunderbird I have never had a problem. Always have a tin and snus on me and I frequently use it in flight. Only questions are usually curiosity but I never hide it. Just make sure you send it all through the scanner at security and, as @Firestarter0 said, use a labeled tin.

I’ve not had problems. Stick to a labelled tin and just put it in the x ray tray with keys wallet belt etc

I’ve also never had a problem - although a pewter box in my hand baggage did result in a search because I’d forgotten it was there. They asked me what it was on the x-ray and I had to say I wasn’t sure, so I couldn’t really blame them!

I never had problem ON the plane (then again, I carry wood snuff boxes.) The only problem I’ve ever had was IN THE TERMINAL by an airport security person who was a wanna’ be narc. He attempted to confiscate my snuffbox, in spite of the fact that I told him it was snuff. The only reason I got it back was because I LOUDLY objected, attracted a real police officer, and threatened to have him arrested for _ theft and petty larceny _ if he did not immediately return my personal property.

@howdydave in what country was that?

I have flown USA to UK a number of times and one internal flight in the USA without incident. I do decant my snuff into a J&H Wilson tin that I keep for this purpose though. I figure the tin holds more than enough for a flight, and little enough that I won’t cry if it’s confiscated. Larger tins go in the checked baggage. The thing to remember is that, no matter what anyone might think, snuff is tobacco, and tobacco is legal. You’re not breaking any laws. The other side of that argument is that, even though it is legal, you wouldn’t want the hassle of having to wait around and miss your flight while security comes to that conclusion. That is why I (like the others above) use the manufacturer’s tins when traveling. Of course, there existst the possibility that security might think you filled a snuff tin with heroin to disguise it, but there really isn’t much you can do about that…

The last few times i’ve flown i’ve had no problem getting a 10G can of WOS on board in my carry on. If I ever had an issue i’d just tell the TSA agent it was like chew. Of coarse you’ll get a few side ways glances once you’re on the flight.

I’ve not had a problem, but just used plastic tap boxes through security in my hand luggage. I’ve snuffed discreetly on flights and again no questions asked.

It’s worth noting that some airlines (Delta, for example) have a no tobacco policy. I believe this is in place to keep people from dipping (and spitting) on planes in close quarters. I have flown extensively with snuff both domestically (US) and internationally with no issue, but I only snuff in the airport. Personally, I use snus on the plane, but I tend to avoid confrontation.
