So, I recently got an order from Mr. Snuff that included Creme de Figue and FT Santo Domingo. I really love the flavor of the Santo Domingo and it looks so moist and fluffy in the tin. It reminded me a lot of Viking Dark which I have been enjoying so much. I take a pinch and it clumps up pretty bad and forms like a little patty between forefinger and thumb. It is then almost impossible for me to snuff and I end up just pushing it up my nose. This is messy and just not enjoyable for me. I really like “smelling” the snuff. I am really new to snuff, and these are the first snuffs that were not sent to me by other members. I have been using Grunt and Viking Dark pretty easily and I’m wondering if fresh snuff is just hard to sniff? Does it need to dry a little like pipe tobacco? Any suggestions would help.
I have the same issue with Gawith’s Kendall Brown. When I first opened the tin I couldn’t believe my eyes, it’s as moist and coarse as Copenhagen. I pretty much “place it” in my nose to put it gently, still haven’t figured out how to just pinch and sniff.
Don’t pinch too hard and you’ll get better results using your middle finger rather than forefinger.
One approach: use your thumbnail to scoop up some snuff, then raise it to your nostril and sniff. This avoids compacting the snuff, and allows you to sniff it rather than shove a compacted ball of snuff up your nose. Be aware, of course, that you will have to sniff harder than you are used to, and some snuff will still probably drop out of your nose…
For this particular snuff, I use a spoon for the very reasons you indicate. I don’t like to compact it.
dry santo domingo/princess special is worse. Consume when fresh.
try slightly rubbing your middle finger and thumb together as you are sniffing your pinch, though often I’ll just take a big pinch on the back of my hand either way. you don’t have to pinch hard. Try liter pinches
I tried the “back of the hand” method and “boxcar” and it solved the issue of clumping and compressing. I guess I just really like the process of pinching and sniffing much better.
Spoon, gentle sniffing: no need to shotgun it down your throat.
Try liter pinches
A liter pinch would be a big nicotine hit! Just joking. @fbones, I use a spoon to put moist snuff on the back of my hand, especially with snuffs like 6Photo Kailash and Anarkali… They’re so moist and fine that it clumps if I pinch (and clumps to form on a spoon). I use the spoon to fluff it out and make a small line and its easier for me to sniff.
@TobaccyLassy I have been trying this exact method all day and it is working much better for me. I had never done this before and had only pinched. I am definitely partial to pinching. I also think I am trying to like Santo Domingo more than I actually do. That could be part of the problem.
What’s a liter pinches? Its French for give me some fucking pinches! Super Troopers
Tough crowd here! I believe he meant “littler” pinches but I could be wrong. Care to clarify @tboyer
Put some on your desk, mash a pinch worth on your finger and snurp it up in there. If it’s too clumpy, break it up with a credit card and take it as a line. Mmmmm…
He probably meant lighter pinches but spelt it the wrong American way
@Dogwalla, how do you do a line and avoid getting it in the sinuses?
Wait, it’s lighter over here too isn’t it?
@fbones24 It’s all about air control. You can use the distance of your nose to the tube and/or distance of the tube from the snuff. Air control also helps a lot. When I first started trying it I used medium grind/moisture snuffs and set my scalp on fire. Now that I have it down I can get it right in the front of my nose easily. It’s not my preferred method for all snuffs, but some just seem to give me a different scent palate when I do it that way. And it feels so damned taboo which is awesome when you are sitting in your home office in front of a window. It freaks the neighbors out. =D
try slightly rubbing your middle finger and thumb together as you are sniffing your pinch
This is how I always take big pinches. Works well and you can control how much snuff is going in the nose.
Nope you guys spell light lite and night nite
I was raised by an English major so maybe that’s the difference. I’ve always been a night and light guy. Perhaps people are bastardizing our already bastardized language. I think spellcheck has ruined people. Refusing to proofread anything has also hurt us. It’s fine when you’re chatting with buddies, but in important communication it’s vital in my opinion. Even my spellcheck goes off with nite. People must be trying to sound silly. It’s nighttime kids, not nittime. Nittime makes you sound like you have crabs.

No we don’t. Advertisers and marketers invented that nonsense. Presumably it made their product appear “clever” or “cute” or some such rubbish.
@Xander Easy on that Marketing & Advertising stuff
@Dogwalla I’m holding back :-"
All jokes aside, the “liter” (lighter) pinch is really working for me. I have to say, I am enjoying Santo Domingo a lot more today pinching very lightly. I am still not used to the courser particles going up my nose, but it is working nicely.
Now that turned out to be something, an english lesson pretending to be how to sniff moist snuff. (I am not going to touch that one) @fbones24 I do moist snuff by tapping out a small amount between my thumb & first finger. Secondly you do not want to snort this so press your tongue against the roof of your mouth while forcing your throat closed you will be able to sniff it up quickly without hitting your throat
spoon fill your box car, I like the swirling snuff as it tickles my nose hairs on the way up. Another plus for moist snuff
@basement_shaman You are the man ^:)^ That is priceless
Eh, while classic grammar and spelling should be respected, language evolves. I say as long as you understand language etc how you express yourself has an effect on language and society- as long as it’s not just a result of ignorance or blindly following the crowd. I was compelled to say that for some reason… Back to the topic, I usually use the basic (perhaps less than pretty) shoveling technique, which yes, might not be the best way.
I agree and must say that since forums and texting, most have adapted to understanding what is written. Here’s a sample from the web: if yuo can raed tihs, you hvae a sgtrane mnid, too. Yes lighter is the correct spelling: Don’t know how I made that mistake, but I think we all would be impressed by a “liter” pinch, that would after all be a very big pinch, which is what I recommend.
