Its unlikely to be the W.E. Garrett sweet as i have had lots of this and never encountered the problem. Your very very unlikely to develop any snuff related health issues, the chances are almost zero. As you are new to snuffing it may be that your technique is not correct and you are getting a lot back your throat but even so this will cause you no serious harm, but your enjoyment will be much increased if you read through these forums and develop the correct tecnique or more correctly a technique that works for you. The american scotch snuffs are renowned for being difficult for those starting out as they are very fine grind. I started just a couple months back and started with Toque Raspberry and Tom Buck both excellant in every respect and a lot easier to snuff than the sweet scotch. Your sore throat may just be coincidental as there are a lot of bugs going about or perhaps you didn’t have a good clear out before going to bed and this caused you to breathe through your mouth something which causes me to have awaken with a sore throat. Variety is one of the really great things about snuff and sometimes a particular snuff just does not agree with you just try them out and see what gives you the most pleasure. There is a lot of good information contained in these forums a good read will lay to rest your health fears and participation will introduce you to a great community. Hope this helps.
Yes, it did help, Al, thanks!!! I do seem to have the ‘technique’ of ‘sniffing/snuffing’ pretty well down though - and never encountered this problem with Bruton or Dental Mild (both American snuffs). It could very well not be the Sweet Snuff that caused the ‘sore-throat’, but somehow I am leaning toward the idea that it was. Any more thoughts on this from anyone else???! Also, Al, and others: “What do the manufacturers add to the ‘Sweet Snuff’ to make it ‘sweet’???!”
I got some W.E. Garrett sweet yesterday. I’m sure glad that I’ve had plenty of practice with easier to take snuffs first, because it’s very fine and you can very easily get it down your throat. I’ve found the only way I can do it is it hold a pinch close to the front of your nostril after you’ve taken a deep breath, and then just “twitch” your nose enough to make a very shallow sniff, and it will work. It’s possible the sweet scotch would irritate your throat if you overdid it, but I seriously doubt it would cause any real problems. You might wanna try going with a less fine snuff right before bed so this sort of thing won’t happen, or at least take a nice swig of water to wash down any that did stick to your throat, so that it won’t bother you.
Sych, thanks for your post!!! I sure learned quick with the Bruton and the Dental Mild, if you ‘snort’ that stuff like a hog - WELL, a fellow could get stifled to death…ROFL!!! The Sweet Garrett may even be finer ground. I breath in until I have my lungs near full, then approach my nose, with my pinch of snuff, while continuing to inhale normally. This (to me) seems to prevent ‘over-snuffing’. I could however (with the Sweet Snuff), after each ‘sniffing session’, taste the sweetness in my throat (but so can I taste a bit of spearmint in my throat with the Crumbs of Comfort - yet with no ’sore-throat’ the next day). SO, maybe something in the Sweet Snuff my body is yet not used to, or possibly it contains something which irritates my throat. I do brush my teeth, gargle, and drink some water before I go to bed, but good advice, Sych!!! Again, if anyone knows: “What do the manufacturers add to the ‘Sweet Snuff’ to make it ‘sweet’???!”

sweet clover was used along with honey crystals & molasses mix some time ago, But don’t know for sure if its still being used as the ingredients are trade secrets. I do believe they are still being used. SnuffyPM, are you going to bed with snuff in your nose or maybe haven’t fully blown it all out. This can cause drainage down your throat while your sleeping resulting in sore throat. Especially english snuffs draining down the back of throat. They are not meant to be taken orally and can cause irritation. Same with menthol. Also going to bed with snuff in the nose can cause nasal blockage as you sleep which would cause you to breathe through your mouth also causing sore throat. Or maybe your snorting some of the snuff/snot back instead of blowing it out? And winter generally having dryer air, this aids in irritating the throat. Have you tried a neti pot or saline spray before you go to bed to wash out the sinuses?

I thank all you guys for the kind and helpful replies!!! However, it seems ‘Sweet Snuff’ and I do not agree with each other. I fear the manufactures are using something to ’sweeten’ the snuff with that irritates my sinuses (causing them to drain), or irritates both my sinuses and my throat. Instead of risking being a casualty of the snuff hobby, I have put away my sweet snuff. I am now again happily enjoying my Dental Mild, Premium Mild, and Crumbs of Comfort (soon hoping to acquire some F&T, HDT!!!). If I can never ’sniff’ Sweet Snuff, no great loss - but after several months of ’sniffing’, I will go back and try it - when I do - I’ll post my results. But again, thanks for all the replies!!!
You should be fine with sweet snuff if you are really careful not to snuff too hard, blow it out well, and don’t use it right before bed. Then again, it just might not be for you.

Menthols can be harsher on the nose than some more natural flavors. If it’s just one nostril, you may have a sore in it or something. I’d recommend avoiding using it in the right nostril for the time (or altogether if you can handle it) and using some neosporin or vaseline in the nose until it gets healed up. That should help, and if it doesn’t, you should tell your doctor and let a professional take a look. Not to mention, it’s the winter month, and dryness can really mess up your nose as well. The vaseline will help that too.
Hello, I figure this’d be the best place for this. Does the Peach brand actually have a taste of peaches to it? On another note, am I the only one who from time to time gets the thought of grape snuff, or more recently green apple? I mean, I realize considering the history of our vice that the these flavors might be in the line of jelly vs. all-fruit, or mustard vs. grey poupon. It’d be a collaboration with Jolly Rancher candies next : P
Definatly have thought of grape. Add a drop of cheap red wine to plain snuff, a wine like manishevites (or how ever it’s spelled). This makes for a grapey snuff.
To me Toque champagne taste more like grape than champagne.
I’m waiting for some grape or apple myself. Dutch windmill Macouba in the snout.
Samuel Gawith says they make an apple snuff but I’ve never seen it.
