Alright, well, I have just received my free sample from getsnus.com. A white portion tin of wintergreen General. Previous to trying this, I had bought a tin of Camel Frost snus. I hear everyone saying how Camel can’t make snus, and how authentic Swedish snus is much better, but I cannot contest to that. In all honesty, I see no difference in quality, general taste, or portion of nicotine in either the Swedish snus or Camel (which is actually made IN Sweden). Here is my question. Is General Swedish snus an inferior brand? Perhaps this is why I cannot tell the difference? As I have no other Swedish snus to compare it to, I would have to say that Camel owns up to the snus ‘name’. But I dare not make such a statement, as I am rather inexperienced in such a field. Can anyone shed some light on this topic? It would be greatly appreciated. Thanks for the time. ~Snuffy
That was quite informational. Thanks for all the help. I am really enjoying the snus that I have tried, and plan on trying many more varieties. I’ll definitely look into the ones you have suggested. Thanks again! ~Snuffy
I guess it depends how you look at it, especially as your main source of nicotine. With Camel, you get 16 servings per package and each serving gives you 6mg of nicotine, so per package you get 96mg of nicotine for about $4.50. General gives you 24, 1g servings at 8mg per serving making for a total of 192mg of nicotine per package for about $3.50. So with General you get roughly twice the nicotine per package as Camel for LESS money! Quite a bit less per mg of nicotine giving you many more servings per container. Thats 192mg with General vs 96mg with Camel, for a buck less! I’ve never had General Wintergreen and stick with more traditional Swedish choices so I can’t comment on the Wintergreen flavor either. Taste and flavor can’t be argued, if you like Camels, great! They’re available in the US. They are just twice as expensive and each serving contains substantially less nicotine than real Swedish Snus. I’m confident that if you try the more traditional Swedish flavors, and not Sweden’s slant on American tastes, you’d like them significantly better, and again…it’s cheaper! I didn’t even mention the artificial sweeteners in Camel, but I gotta run right now.
lxskllr - I’d like to hear your recommendations for non-swedish match snus that is better. I really like Goteborgs Rape and Ettan and I’d love to try better.
#1 Etan Los #2 Skruff Stark. That’s all I use- tried many types, but these are my fav’s. Montecristo LOS is damn good, too- but more money for less SNUS, so I don’t buy it often.
What is the deference between the american and swedish dip. Is the swedish finer or what? I never knew that snus came in so many deferent kinds. I must try some.
To toss my 2 cents in here as a longtime Copenhagen addict, many, and almost all the dippers I know regard the sweet, candy type dips as beginner or garbage dip. I don’t agree that on the whole ‘American dips’ are sweet. Copenhagen and Redman are representative of good quality American dips and could hardly be called sweet. There are others that are tobacco flavored too but these are the two I use/used. ymmv Snus’ main attraction for me is twofold; no spitting required and snus is much gentler on the teeth and gums. I gravitate towards the tobacco flavored snus just as I did toward the tobacco flavored American dips. Los snus or loose snus, is quite finely ground, Copenhagen and Redman FC are pretty fine, granular cuts too but not quite as fine.
I Love Snus !
Thanks for the info I’m going to order some this weekend.
Yep, snus is awesome Jarhog, I bet you’ll like it. Nothing like riding a gentle wave of nicotine for up to 2 hours straight. Snus also goes amazingly well with snuff, like a match made in Heaven!
Hello. What are everyones thoughts about my adding snus to NicotineRush.com? Opinions appreciated. Manufacturers and their web sites needed as well. Thanks, Tom NicotineRush.com
If you can send fresh cold snus from the US at US rates, that would be freaking fantastic!
I’m only one person, but if you added snus to your menu, I would definately add at least a can or 2 to every snuff order I placed. And depending on the variety you could supply, I could see myself placing some decent sized snus orders…
Yea, Tom. Like badbusinessman said. Sending it from the US at US rates would be amazing. Overseas shipping is less convenient, so getting it from the states is a big plus. And, like Poo-Diddy, I would definitely be ordering snus everytime I order snuff. Perhaps even moreso, as a tin of snuff lasts me much longer than a tin of snus. If you are going to venture into snus, you will definitely have my business. =] ~Snuffy
Yep, you’d have to keep trading in any unsold for fresh as it dated for expiration. As lxsk llr say’s, you won’t be wanting for competition, but if you can make it work, you’ll have another customer here too.
I sent Swedish Match a request, but they have not responded. It’s like pulling teeth with some of these manufacturers. I swear some of them act like they could care less whether they sell anything or not. Tom NicotineRush.com
Yeah you should plan of keeping it refrigerated if you carry it to ensure freshness.
thanks for the info about the free can of snus (well, $1 isn’t bad). I use snus occasionally in class at school. It took a while for me to get used to the lemon salty taste but now I rather enjoy it. I bought a sample pack of portion snus from the northerner a while back. Total shipped cost was less than $30 for 8 cans. Cheaper than buying individually and they gave a pretty decent selction as well as a nice booklet on the history of snus and the various types. Only thing is you have to choose between loose or portion whereas I would have liked to try a bit of each initially.
Thanks for the heads up on the $1 can for getsnus. I got the general loose. I like the loose better than the portion. They shipped it pretty fast too.
Gotlunds Grey Los is great, this is one of my favorites in flavored snus. If you like portions LD’s a nice one if a bit candylike, and Romeo y Julietta is a more refined “grown-up” style of snus, I like em all, depending on my mood. I never had Offroad but imagine it would be candylike too, I do like their Wintergreen and especially their Cranberry Lös.
“Does anyone know of a good strong licorice flavored snus?” - I think the best of the strong anise flavored portion snus is Romeo y Julieta… and that by a long shot. It’s cuban tobacco snus, and the two most well-known Swedish retailers won’t ship to the USA, but there are other very reliable sellers who will. In the interests of keeping these channels open, I don’t think it’s a good idea to state publicly who they are. It’s easy enough to find out if one’s resourceful.
ld los is awesome have a freezer full now it’s wonderfull
I orederd some ettan , general and montecristo portion and a box of oliver twist original i have never used oral tobacco but i am trying to quit cigarretes and i think that snus will help !!! ( i have a little fear about mouth diseases but i will try anyway)
Thanks i ordered portion ones because i think that will be easier to use but if i like i will order some loose too!!
Everybody else’s recommendations look great to me but the one that I haven’t seen that you should try is Roda Lacket. It’s a sweeter style of REAL swedish snus and I think you’ll like it.
Yeah, Phantom is awful. Most Offroad flavors are alright, but they tend to have a lot more flavoring and sweetness to them. Don’t try Elixyr either. It’s hideous.
I’ve got a Nick & Johnny portion in my lip right now. It’s got a nice peppery burn, much like General Sterk. I’ve also still got a can of Ettan in my freezer that I haven’t opened up yet until I finish up the can of Granit that I’m working on. I like to rotate around to different brands depending on the time of day and the amount of nicotine in them. Pretty much any Strong portion is a good “wake me up” and later at night I’ll use only normal portions or some Goteborgs Rape loose.
its looks like many people here make snus !!
Roda Lacket Los and General Los here available! And Cathc Dry Portions here(Catch is baaad). I like the Los veeery much!
I use snus mostly but I love a good snuff several times a day also. My go to snus is the dreaded Offroad coffe/vanilla, which everyone says tastes crappy. Just another testament to the large variety of indiviual tastes we all have. A side note; I could never have given up the cigs without snus. Snuff helps but the nic hit doesn’t last long enough to curb my nic cravings for a cig. So its the snus man its the snus. But snuff gives me a great flavor blast. but I’d really love a Kool non-filtered, I know I can’t even have one or I’m back to the cigs again. oh well…SnusOn…oh and…SnuffOn!!!
my local speedway has camel snus COMING SOON… anyway wondering if its even worth a try i’ve heard bad things about it should i pick some up when it comes or is it a complete waste of my hard earned money.
Might as well try it. Just realize that you have NO idea what they put in it. Swedish snus always has an ingredient list. Anything American having to do with tobacco scares me now that I know how friggin evil the American tobacco companies are.
I ordered from getsnus the other day and my mystery can was nick and johnny west. i was expecting something cheaper.
Yeah, I got a mystery can of Ettan with my last order. Good stuff.
thanks for the input guys and i have only a couple of remaining questions; i understand that you can swallow the juice from snus and your supposed to place it in the upper lip, is this correct?
Yep on both counts Johndeere89, although lower-lipping is not altogether uncommon either. It just produces more juice than many care to deal with.
The thing about snus is that the “juice” isn’t anything like dip juice which will make you turn 10 shades of green if you swallow it. Snus juice is essentially just flavored water and your own saliva. Once you swallow it a few times, it won’t bother you and you may actually like it. And as long as you don’t move it around or anything, it won’t drip much anyways.
Yes, it does have to do with the location in your mouth, but I promise you that you salivate no matter where it goes in your mouth, just less so in the front of your upper lip. I’ve lower lipped it as well, and again, the juice is fine to swallow. Try it with both snus and dip and see what happens. Any other snuser on here should be able to verify what I’m saying. There’s a HUGE difference between the juices produced from fire-cured, fermented dip and steam cured snus. I haven’t been “untruthful” about anything.
I agree, lower-decking produces prodigious amounts of saliva and while not altogether uncommon, not very popular either. I oftentimes lower-deck portions just get the juices flowing and then move it around to control the juice. I personally am not a fan of lower-decking Los, just too much to swallow, at least for me. While the difference between snus-juice and Cope is pretty big, I wouldn’t want to swallow mouthfuls of either! Upper decking is the only way to go with Los for me.
I think the main difference is, if you swallow snus juice, it “might” burn a little and give you heartburn. If you swallow juice from Cope (which I have on accident) it takes a cast iron stomach to not cough and wheeze and nearly puke. As a matter of fact, I’ve accidentally swallowed small amounts of Goteborgs Rape (NOT just the juice) and it really had hardly no effect besides making me a little gassy for the rest of the day. Try swallowing a small chunk of Cope. It’s extremely unpleasant. Like I’ve been saying, there’s a massive difference between the two. No, it probably wouldn’t be that pleasant to drain the juice out of snus and then drink it, but you wouldn’t nearly die either. Fire curing dip brings out all the same toxic chemicals as cigarettes have in them, although not to quite the same extent. The process of making snus, prevents it from becoming anywhere close to being as toxic, and as a matter of fact is over 50% water. Dip juice is pretty much all fermented, fire cured tobacco juice. So when I say snus juice is mostly water, it’s a fact.
Skruf’s fire cured.
Oh yes, welcome to the forum! Spit’s mostly water too. edit: Great link bigblue, quite a difference from just 10 years ago.
I threw a snus portion in my almost empty coffee cup once. Was at a meeting doing drink recipe tasting. When I sipped it back in my mouth I got one hella juicy dip tea bag prilla. Mostly water though. I just took it like the man that I am. I was sick for a couple of minutes. Went back to passing around the snuff mix. I think snuff is better suited for drinking with, due to the leach factor. So much for my snus tea idea. I don’t think I’ll try it. But I wouldn’t mind a coffee enema.
Ive not read through all of these posts so this might have been answered, but how close is snus to dip? I use cope, grizzly and also redman as the odd break from snuffing. I also gut the juice as Im a nicotine junky.
Yeah, switching sides of the mouth does help my gums a whole lot. When I first started snusing, it bugged the hell out of me, but once you get used to it and learn not to keep it in the same spot everytime, it’s not so bad.
thanks for clearing that up folks.
prima fint is one of my favorite.
Camel and Marlboro snus is just too expensive for me, so I’ll take the real thing any day. With good snus shops around like Getsnus.com that are based in the US, and they don’t charge for shipping over $50, it’s too good of a deal to waste money on subpar junk.
Yeah, I know. Getsnus.com has to put warning labels on every can of snus they sell. I pull them off out of spite.
I bought some snus today: General White Portion Mini 10gram. Good or bad? I like the taste, it’s like real tobacco. The Stuyvesant which my wife bought is to sweet (coffee flavour)
Pieter, General is good, white is easy on the gums, but the mini portions barely have any kind of nicotine. If you like the flavor, buy the fullsize next time.
While the size of the mini’s are quite discreet the cost is almost twice as much per weight than regular sized portions.
I found proper snus locally today too. It was also General White (but regular size). They only carried General at this shop, and no snuff. As I’ve been itching for snus for over a day (not counting my mistaken experiment with Camel) I greedily popped it in. On the way home I read the label (best before 04 21 2009). Oh well. It hasn’t gone bad. I was probably one of the first people to buy one from this shop. I think the owner was thrilled to sell it. I pressed him for snuff as I was checking out too, and even offered him a pinch of my vintage Levi Garrett from my Patrick Collins Padauk Snuffbox. I know all of you guys would have been honored to get such a treat, but for some strange reason this guy refused. “I only smoke cigars” he said in a moderate Eastern European accent. So I took a pinch myself to show him, and off I went. @ Juxtasposer: I agree with you on the price of minis, especially if I use two at a time, and they don’t last nearly as long; but they fit so nicely in place, I can use them almost all the time. I don’t know if I’m odd, but I like the Northerner/Oomph/Wise minis, especially the plain one (I think its called Food&Wine Gourmet). Also for someone who does not generally like sweet snus, I really enjoyed the little samples of General Mini Mint that Swedish Match sent out. Flavors are occasional though. The best snus for me is the one that I can’t tell its there.
@ Pieter: that Stuyvesant you mention sounds a lot like the Camel Mellow I had yesterday. Truly horrible. I could not get past the first portion, let alone finish the tin. I cannot fathom why they would invest so much in marketing such a terrible product. I would not wish it on my worst enemy. So, since you are not my enemy, would you like the rest of the tin?
>> While the size of the mini’s are quite discreet the cost is almost twice as much per weight than regular sized portions. And four times per weight as Loose. But that takes some getting used to , especially if you plan on going outside.
xander, you aren’t alone. I like 6mg Wise/Oomph mini’s. Citrus and Honey and Northerner Energy. My wife loves both as well. I find they are perfect for those occasions requiring maximum discreetness. Like church or a job interview. Plus Northerner had a deal on the “easter” version. $1.87 a can. I stocked up. Being dry they keep almost forever.
i have a portion of Northerner Energy under my lip right now.
I would love to try the bigger portions but the only tobacconist in town only stock the small ones. I went to bed last night with a snussie in my lip!! I might be into something new. I like the real tobacco flavour in my mouth.
Don’t you think you might choke on it in your sleep?
Tom, I never gave that a thought! But I did take it out before I fell asleep.
I almost always sleep with a portion in.
My mouth is watering right about now and I’m completely out of snus. Seriously need to do something about this.
Jack, getsnus is in Pennsylvania, and ships quickly. If you’re “in a pinch” I have had a couple great (and quick) experiences with them. Sadly they do not have a huge variety, but it’s all fresh, and they do have general wintergreen and skruf stark, my flavorites.
Hey any of you guys have an icetool? iam thinking about buying one but i can’t choose between the stainless and the aluminium what do you guys think?
I have an aluminum icetool that I got as a freebie for buying four rolls of general los. It’s great, works really well and makes using los much easier. I’ve also used the prismaster, and the icetool is leagues better. I haven’t used a steel one, but I would imagine that there’s not much difference, other than the weight of the icetool.
I have a prismaster but the shape of the pris is uncofortable. I think i will choose the aluminium one . Thanks for the answer tybalt.
I have used both the aluminum and stainless Icetools. I own two stainless ones. The only difference is the weight. I prefer the feel of the heavier one. They are both well made and will last a lifetime, and both do the intended job equally well.
Nice to know about this Thanks bigmick!
No problem ap. The way I see it is if you want pretty colors the aluminum is the only option. If you want shiny and sheer ruggedness, go stainless. Although they now offer a aluminum and stainless combo tool. Aluminum barrel, stainless plunger.
Yeah i saw the stailess/aluminum at Icetool site! But you are right man I want that pretty blue aluminum one !
@zonesix: Thanks for the tip , but I’m not in the US. I’m currently suffering from acute lack of mail-box. The apartment building administration took-em down when they started renovating the building’s entrance and i don’t trust my postal workers to go up to my floor and leave the notification hanging in my door. Hell the military post didn’t bother to personally hand me my recruitment order when they were supposed to do so. I’ll have to just risk it and order from the northerner anyway. Since you’re a fan of skurf stark , how is it compared to General Extra Stark ? Flavor and nicotine-kick-in-the-head wise ? (and does it have any juicing issues ? General Extra Stark was a bit uncomfortable at times but man does it pack a punch.) @ap I’d say stainless because it’s …well stainless. There are theories that Aluminum might cause dementia/Alzheimer’s disease . They haven’t quite pinned it down , and the risk would be even smaller with an ice-tool rather than say …eating with an aluminum spoon or drinking water out of an container but it’s just one more thing I’d prefer to avoid. Besides stainless is heavier , i like little things to be heavy. You can feel it better in your pocket and not loose it as easily. I’m planning on getting one as well , just as soon as i start work again and order a big shipment of los :).
personaly I think baking it is better. As you have more control over the shape. Though the ice tool looks awesome. I want one just because of how cool it looks.
That might be true , and I’m sure that after acquiring some skill I’d feel the same about it as i do about RYO machines , they’re mostly useless. But it seems like a quicker and cleaner alternative at this time, and while i might be able to justify smoking breaks i know the same wouldn’t fly for baking breaks at my job , snus is completely unheard of .
I like to bake the pris myself too but its not easy and sometimes doesnt work as expected! Thanks for the tips guys!
I just wanted to comment on the Icetools from earlier. I bought one of the stainless los snus boxes. I love it. It’s very stylish and whenever I get a pinch around folks that haven’t seen it, everyone wants to check it out.
This boxes looks really cool for sure!
the biggest hint for baking a prilla I can give is to go gentle slowly work it. Plus bathroom breaks are obviously allowed at your work.
True , but usually there’s either no bathroom around or no soap :). Portion actually seems the best option at my workplace. I’d hate to have a prilla start to break down while I’m in the car or carrying some expensive piece of equipment and my hands look like I’ve just dug out a vegetable garden barehanded.
I generally use portions at work or when I’m meeting with other people (and also at the bar). But, when I’m out in the field, or at home; I would much rather have los snus.
I decided to revisit snus again. Mainly because it seems, this change in weather, here in the US to hot and humid, has made me often stopped up, and the snuff isn’t helping it, it seems to make it worse. So I am sitting here nasally stopped up as I write this. When I first started nasal snuff it was cold weather, and I had no issues at all. Anyway, on days when I am stopped up, I thought some snus might be good to do. Now I am “revisiting” snus, because my 1st take, I really didn’t care for it. I didn’t hate it, but maybe also it was the kinds I had. So, I am thinking, how sometimes someone doesn’t like something, but then later does. Also like snuff, snus has many different flavors and brands, some people like some more than others, so it’s all a matter of you don’t know till you try it. So I made an order for 4 different snus cans, and maybe I can snus in the day, and snuff at night, or vice versa, or snus in the summer, and snuff afterwards. I don’t know, but I do know I am feeling miserable not haveing clear nasal passageways… I haven’t hit the nasal spray in a while… hmmm I was trying to avoid using that though.
Camel Snus was the 1st snus I tried as well, being in the US and it is sold down the street. The main problem with it, was it’s too sweet. If they knocked down the sweetness, at least by half, I think it would be way better. That said, I had a bunch of very non-sweet Swedish made snus that I thought was terrible too. So I guess it’s just a matter of finding one that one likes, alot, or enough to continue use. My “revisit” may only make me realize I really don’t like snus. But 16 bucks ain’t much, and I’ll offer it as a trade if I hate them. But I am really miserably stuffed up… I wonder if a week off all snuff would help me?
Well, I ordered 4 different kinds to sample: Catch Dry Eucalyptus Odens Classic Cinnamon Roda Lacket Skruf Cranberry I have no idea if I’ll like them or not.
Well, I don’t want to quit snuff, I like it more than any other tobacco item I have tried/used. But I need some “alternative”, I guess till the season changes, at least. And I wonder if I gave my 1st snus usage a proper go, though I have never been a fan of oral tobacco. So, it’s a try it and see thing.
I really personaly prefer the less flavoured snuses. Though roda lacket and Goteborgs prima fint are amazing as well as Goteborgs Rape.
