Survery: Anybody has interest in a dedicated chat again ?

Since the chat-plugin on the site is gone (for a while it seems), i would like to offer the option of running a easy-to-reach IRC channel again. So, i think i should explain 2 things here: IRC and “easy-to-reach”. 1. IRC means “Internet Relay Chat” and it is the oldest form of real-time conversation via Internet which is still in existence today. It is free of charge and available around the globe with all kinds of hardware (from oldest computers to modern smartphones and tablets). 2. “easy-to-reach” means you can connect to IRC networks without a special software. There are at least 2 very powerful provider for in-browser IRC access. Within 1 minute you can talk with your pals. No hassle. People who wants to use a client software can choose from a wide range of software for all available operating systems. You can see, i try to keep it easy for you pals. The point why i ask for your interest is simple, i LOVE tobacco just like you AND i want to hang out from time to time with like-minded snuffers, chewers and pipe-smokers in real-time. Enjoy the stuff, maybe have a few drinks and start a nice chat night. Thatś it. In the times, when the chat-plugin was on the side, i had a bunch of really nice and interesting conversation with some of you (maybe you remember) and i want it again. So, in case that at least a handful of people answer this and you would like to have a real-time place around all this good stuff we love, i will setup some and post it here. PS: I will ONLY post it here. This is NOT ANY OFFICIAL SNUFFHOUSE ACTION (since i am not in the team of this site), BUT it is dedicated to the people of this fine community. I hope i hear something of you.

We removed the chat due to racist comments; it was too much to moderate. If you all want to make an off-site chat go ahead, but please don’t use the Snuffhouse name.

I remember that the one that used be be embedded just suddenly exploded with Manufacturer gripes. I wasn’t around for the racism part. I’ve modded in IRC (Waaaay back when), and it’s a giant pain. It takes constant vigilance to keep it running well. It’s either that or you have to have well designed bots to take off a bunch of the workload. !seen EggDrop lol

The chat that was embedded here went south real quick, I’m not interested in trying it again. Any time you have the ability for people to remain anonymous you always run the risk of vile behavior that they would not otherwise engage in.

I’m a regular IRC user and I’m all for an IRC channel, I’d definitely join

What are you planning exactly, just setting up a channel on Mibbit or somesuch?

The chat feature was a troll magnet, I’m glad its gone

#snotminertroll

We should use the picture @Dogwalla made for when a troll comes along.

Isn’t there a way to integrate a chat on the forum that only allows registered users access with their forum screennames?

Breaker breaker you got your ears on good buddy? 10 /4 . Interesting concept

The forum where I usually reside (totally different topic matter) has tried the chat a couple of times and have decided never again. Firstly there is the policing aspect, although there tends to be very little policing required there as the spirit of the community (or core of most active members) is almost a family feel, and the warmth, tolerance and humour predominantly rubs off onto most newcomers there. Aside from that, their policy on threads being derailed or frittering of into a total side discussion is tolerated and almost encouraged. The theory being that a discussion is an organic thing and to try and contain it to the topic in the title restrains it in an adverse way. If this free flowing discussion were to occur via a separate medium (live chat) many nuggets of information, tips, tricks, anecdotes and observations (relevant to the forum) would be lost as the chat “expires” (don’t know the correct terminology there) which otherwise would have been documented by having the free flowing conversation in the threads, and therefore documented for future. Not trying to teach anyone here how to suck eggs, just an observation from elsewhere

Everyone I would like to chat with lives in a diffrent time zone !

I feel like it might be worth pointing out at this point that the kind of chat the OP suggests would be completely off-site and unofficial, so if there were any troll issues, they wouldn’t be felt on the site at all. trolls are less common in small IRC channels than on forum chat plugins anyway

I have a good idea: A IRC channel can be made invisible on the network and so only people who know about the chat and its name (example: #welovetobacco) can join. Means, even if the chat not official of any sorts, we could post the name of it only inside the forum, at least only SH-members can join. What do you guys think of that ?

^ in that case anyone can visit this forum and get the chat name, I don’t think that there is a way to make threads visible to ONLY members so any troll can come on here and get the info needed to fill your chat with their trollness.

There is a way to make sections only visible to members but that means that legit lurkers will not be able to see them.

Well another site I am on has an irc channel linked to it’s own subsection of the forum with only that and a couple ofter specific sections as members only. So that would be an idea if the moderating team decided to pick it up.

@n9inchnails I am pretty sure that the software this forum runs (Vanilla) is capable of doing exactly that. Members only forum is not a technical problem at least. I am quite sure. Should google that. Anyway, since it seems the IRC is not that popular anymore (for some reasons i can understand, other i cannot), i did create this http://snuffhouse.org/discussion/8308/chit-chat-thread#latest for people who just want to “hang out” at the “Pub” a bit. Should not be a problem. If it is, admins go ahead.
