The amonia in this is unbelievable. Currently I’m airing some from a 50g jar in a smaller 15g jar. Hardly any effect after a few hours except it dried a little. So I added some water to try and dilute the amonia and am continuing to air it. If anything the amonia in the 50g jar seems to have just gotten stronger in the couple of months I’ve had it. It seems something is a bit wrong with this as the amonia is masking any other flavour or scent and can’t seem to be gotten rid of, well so far at least. I still have some CDF from an earlier order and it has no amonia at all in fact has a beautiful sweet scent. I really have never come accross amonia in snuff like this. The only other time I’ve smelt so much amonia is an actual bottle of the stuff. I’m going to experiment with this 15g to see if I can ever air/dilute it out but so far it doesn’t seem like it’s going to work. I think the amonia has even destroyed the figue flavouring or the figue flavouring has turned to amonia which I suspect is what has happened?
Hi. I do not use any chemical preservatives in my snuffs, other than a little Maldon Sea salt diluted in distilled water. The natural ammonia will be much stronger from a 50gm jar than from a 15gm one and I can only suggest you decant your daily requirement, let it breath for a while and then place it in a snuff box which is warmed to body temperature. I don’t think diluting it with water is the answer. Any further problems, PM me. Johnny
Thanks Johnny So what about microwaving? Well that didn’t work either. Further airing didn’t make any difference. Still loads of amonia, I mean loads!!! It’s just not even lessoning any. It’s as if it’s completely turned to amonia. So I’d basically given up after trying airing and then I wondered would a few seconds in the micro kind of speed up the airing and warm the snuff and maybe I’d detect some figue again. Nothing to loose it seemed. Well it did speed it up but the sample I did it with is still amonia and otherwise dead. No flavour whatsoever. I’ll try your suggestion with a new amount from the 50g jar but I think the figue flavour that it used to have is all but amonia now so I think it’s had it but I will try and will let you know. When I first received the jar I was surprised by the amount of amonia and it wasn’t a pleasing smell and the 50g’s Auld Alliance and Moro Moro I got in the same order had no amonia smell but I thought it was just fresh and would settle down. I could however beyond the amonia still get some nice figue flavour back then and I’m thinking if I would have aired it fully then it might have got rid of the amonia then and saved the flavour. I hope this works but currently can’t say I’m hopeful. Will post later or PM you after trying your suggestion.
As ever, very happy to replace it. PM me your address. Johnny
Thanks Johnny. The other SWS I have are superb.
Very surprised to come down to the kitchen this morning and found the CDF sample that I had left there last night reeking of amonia and basically given up on, now to be almost amonia free. Definitely a great improvement but I’m going to continue to air it and see if it really comes to life. So if anyone else encounters this I would suggest an all night airing and I think the sooner the better as otherwise the amonia in the stored jar seems to build and build. I think this CDF is going to be ok now. I still get some amonia but it’s nothing like it was and I think the figue flavour is starting to appear again. I’m now airing the whole jar as I think it’s going to need 24hrs at least to loose the amount of amonia that has built up.
