Suggestions for oily snuff needed

I am still quite new to the world of snuff but during the short time I have noticed something like medicinal effects to my mucous membranes. Surprisingly it is not connected with so called ‘medicated’ pieces but more with snuff with added oil. Somebody have mentioned he consider Pöschl’s Gletscher Prise as ‘soothing’. Well, I have the same experience with any other oily snuff. Probably I am an exception—schmalzlers don’t clog my nose up, they clean it! Does exist adding of margarine or any base oil to snuff like in Germany somewhere else?

Hmm. Most of the German made snuffs are oil based. You can try them all, and see what you like. I agree you can get a good nose running if that is what you are looking for with a good many of them. However, most German snuffs (outside of schmalzers) do contain menthol. If you want to add your own oil to an ungreased schmalzler, I’d suggest the Sternecker Echt Fresko (Ungefettet). To this, you can add your own oil, its recommended 15-20%. I have used conventional lard, but many oils will work. You may also want to try Indian made snuffs. Traditionally they use ghee, which is clarfied butter (similar to schmaltz) but nowadays usually use mineral oil. Some do not contain menthol.

Dholakia Black is quite oily and a very effective decongestant. Also just an all-around great snuff, my current favorite. It’s Indian; very fine grind but also oily so it’s not like a toast or white. Smells like barnyard with a hint of something else - camphor? spearmint?

Gletscher is not schmalzler. Try Bernard ones: Aecht Altbayerischer or Brasil Feinst And yup, schmalzlers clean up my nose too :stuck_out_tongue:

Glad I’ve got a kilo of Brasil Feinst (in the old 100g foil packs) safely stashed away…

Thanks! Schmalzlers are really great. For me their only one disadvantage is their strength  With a nice pinch I need to sit!

That is interesting, because I find schmalzlers really mild and gentle  or maybe you have on mind their nicotine shot.

Yes, I mean that. But I consider them as strong in ‘taste’ too.

DId I read this thread right - someone is mixing their snuff with LARD??

They used to. This is what “Schmalzler” means - a snuff made with “Schmalz”. It is german name for lard. Nowadays no one uses Schmalz, but paraffin, petrolatum, melase.

@snuffski @Viertel Yes! Here it is with my own review and description: https://mistersnuff.com/catalog/sternecker-echt-fresco-ungefettet-100g-p-1328.html?osCsid=6a8876727194a159a45fd6b6f703829e

@Xander - Ive been considering the ungefettet variety and making my own with either coconut oil or bacon grease. I do like Sudfrucht and Amonstrinha - the Amonstrinha is like a camphor campfire and does clear my sinuses.

I wouldn’t use bacon grease. You want a very pure/clean oil. One in which all proteins have been cooked or filtered out.
