Suggestions for a noob?

I’m new to snuff, very new.I need some suggestions for a good beginner’s snuff.Non-Menthol.I don’t know what to order and don’t know what’s good and what’s crap. Thanks for the help.

What have you tried already?

Only one I’ve tried is Toque Quit.I really like it.I also have a sample of Rooster I’ve yet to try.

For non-menthols, I’d recommend the many great snuffs from Toque, if it doesn’t say “menthol” on them, then it’s not. Also many of the Dholakia made snuffs are very good and non-menthol, FUBAR Grunt, Blast Whisky Honey, QWS Smokers Blend… and the F&T snuffs are non-menthol and considered classics. Individual taste is what will differ. You just have to try some to see. Also the many “SP” snuffs are well accepted, Wilsons Best SP, Wilsons Tom Buck, McChrystals S’nuff, Toque Original…

Toque is still running their 10 for 9 deal on 10g tins. It’s a really good way to sample a bunch of different flavors and the price is right. Not sure where your live but my order made it from across the pond to AZ in a week. (see the banner on the left for toque) I also think Wilson’s of Sharrow is a really good brand to start with. They have tons of flavors and I’ve liked almost everyone I’ve had. I buy a lot of their menthols, but you might look into the Irish High Toast no22, best dark, irish coffee, rum and blackberry or lemon grove to start. I’ve also heard their raspberry is good. Nicotine rush has a lot of WOS snuff. Lastly I highly recommend McChrystal’s. Their bread and butter is O&G which is menthol, which I know you don’t want but their rapsberry, mild lemon, and apricot are really nice. And again, Nicotine rush has those. Anyway, you will find every single person on here has their own flavors and personal favorites. The only way you can find out what you like is to just sample as many as you can get your hands on.

OK, it also depends on which country you are in to get what is conveinent for you. Toque Quit tastes very much like Toque Natural, but with more nicotine. If you want a less potent hit with the same flavor, then get Natural. Rooster is likely to blow your head off since you are a newb, but its good that you have a scotch in your collection. I think the first thing I did is try something from each snuff company. Get a couple Toque and Wilson’s for sure, pick flavors that sound appealing. Also get one Fribourg & Treyer (but not High Dry Toast your first time). You may also want to get one or two from Samuel Gawith, Gawith Hogarth, de Kralingse, Dholakia, and Bernard. If you shop at Snuff Store or Mars Cigars, absolutley get one or two of the magnificent Bespoke brand snuffs. Styles as Tom says are another good way to balance. An SP is essential. Floral or fruit are also popular styles If you’re brave you will try Taxi. If you’re masochistic you will get lots of Toasts and Scotches. If you get these, get only one of each for now, these take some getting used to. Its important that you balance on your first order so that you know where to focus on your next order. Beware of the words “Extra” or “Plus” on some snuff names, this often means menthol. If in doubt read the description on the site, or ask someone here. You can also read snuffreviews.com. . Your budget might determine what you get, but if you are letting yourself spend $50-$60 you can get a very nice sampling of the snuff world. I don’t regret any of my purchaces in this past year. Some I like better than others, but very few I thought were completely without merit.

You can pick up a Scotch Snuff at the local grocery, like Kroger, W.E. Garret, Bruton, the sweet Red Seal. Some people love the scotches, I’m not a fan though. For a total newbie, who says they don’t want menthol, overall, for cheap too, I’d recommend ordering the 10 for 9 Toque direct from Toque, and just click 10 that doesn’t say menthol. You’d have a quality variety, it would last a long time, and you’d only be out about $20.

Great! Thanks for all the suggestions. One more thing, say I do spend $50 on various snuffs,it will take awhile to do it all right? How long does this stuff stay good?

Yes it will take awhile to go through it. Many of us have a hundred or more open containers on hand at any given time. Its not a big concern for them going bad. Mainly you want to keep them airtight and out of direct sunlight. Most of the containers they are sold in are usually pretty good. You can put them into airtight bags, jars etc. The biggest issue is drying out. For snuffs that are already dry like scotches, its not too much of an issue. If you can gaurantee the airtightness of it, it stays good indefinately. There are plenty of tips in the archives of this forum on storage. For water based snuffs, there are even rehydration techniques if you need them.

Store your snuff in their original tins in a airtight container in a cool/ out of the sun place, and it will be fine for a long time. I keep mine in small ziplock type bags in a tupperware container. Even with out that keeping them in a drawer they should be good for months.
