I went to my doctor’s office today to get a prescription for some antibiotics. The N.P. told me the most stupid thing I’ve ever heard a medical professional say about snuff: It’s not good for you – it gets into your lungs. I was a good boy and remained silent. What I was thinking was: "THAT’S AN ANATOMICAL IMPOSSIBILITY! How is snuff going to get into your lungs from your nose if it never even gets as far as the sinuses?"
If she ever makes a statement like that again I feel duty bound to call her out on it!
Well, IDK, but I do cough up some luggies after hitting the White Elephant too hard. I suspect SOME snuffs might hit the lungs.
@mecompco the back of the nose drains via the throat so that would explain being able to cough up the aforementioned luggies. @howdydave As for it getting in your lungs, I should think it wouldn’t be too difficult to get in there if the snuff was fine and you inhaled way too deeply. I’ve coughed snuff clouds out my mouth when I was first using snuff, and after coughing I would inhale. I could see some of that making it’s way in there, but not enough that I’m worried about it.
With the snuffs that I use, if even a bit got into my sinuses I would know it because I get a burning sensation in my eyes. The only other way is post nasal drip.
Nothing, after having one of them yammer on for half a hour when I said I do smoke a few years ago I decided to not mention I smoke or use tobacco any more. Funny thing was I went in because my leg was hurting something chronic, ended up walking out and found myself a new doctor.
The real irony is that I am a heavy snuff user due to the recommendation of an MD!
I have heard any number of crazy things about snuff, and then I clarify that my snuff isn’t oral but nasal- then it really comes on. I shrug and move on.
The Dutch Wikipedia article on nasal snuff says it can be bad for the teeth. But leave it, I’m not taking the trouble to make an account there and correct it. Don’t know who wrote it! I don’t think my doctors have enough knowledge of snuff (and snus) to say something true about it. It is too unknown here, and I don’t think they read the few studies there are.
I had a serious chest problem recently whereupon I was hospitalised for a week and I’m still recovering months later. The doctors at the hospital blamed it on snuff as they had no idea for a cause otherwise. I have no idea what caused it either but it was almost as if I had altitude sickness and my immune system was shutting down my lungs even though I live close to sea level. I stopped vaping permenantly and stopped taking snuff for about 10 days also as I had to take the chest problem pretty seriously. It made no difference to my symptoms. So I started snuff again and again it made no difference to my chest so I keep on using snuff and slowly my chest is getting back towards normal thankfully but it will take some more time yet. I still avoid very fine snuffs and no longer vape as I think that was more likely to be the culprit. I just tell the doctors now that I no longer use snuff. I’m happy enough myself that snuff is not the cause or stopping taking it the solution but I don’t feel the doctors would listen so I feel forced to lie on this occasion. Even if I fully recover and then revealed to them that I still use snuff then I’m sure they would still see it as bad somehow. Doctors don’t know everything but nevertheless they do feel able to make unsubstantiated decrees. Lucky that we can override these and decide for ourselves. If snuff was giving me any problem then I would certianly cease using it immediately but this does not appear to be neccessary and I’m literally playing with my life here as my chest did get so bad I could hardly breath and even had a lot of muscle wastage as I was bed bound for so much of the time but on balance I seem to feel better with the enjoyment of continuing to use snuff. I would not disclose using snuff to doctors or anyone similar again unless it genuinely could be giving me problems and then of course they will just say to stop using it. I think it should be possible to know yourself if snuff is problematic for you and act on that yourself without being ordered to by a doctor. I’m at the stage now were I no longer care what actuallly happened to my chest as long as it keeps recovering and glad that snuff does not appear to have been the villan. I just think it was a combination of stopping smoking, vaping and getting some kind of chest virus that altogether overloaded my system but as soon as you mention snuff to a doctor then they seem to become all consumed with that notion. I would have loved it if snuff had actually seemed to help my chest recover but sadly not (as the two don’t seem to be connected), just as neither did it hinder, so in my non doctor mind if it is not effecting my chest problem negatively then it’s not or could not have been the cause of the problem but what do I know?

The thing that I like about Wikipedia is that a person who knows what he’s talking about can correct or edit out blatent errors.
And likewise someone who doesn’t can change it back…
And if you correct it and the idiot who entered the wrong details is a mod it can get you banned from Wikipedia. As happened to me.
@Roderick , It’s a harsh business, Wikipedia editing. I added Toque (and G, H & Co.) in the UK snuff manufacturers list in January and it’s apparently still there. I’ve had an account for a while, maybe that helps.
The stupidest thing I head about nasal snuff is it will make your penis smaller. No wait - that was bank account. Yeah - it will totally make your bank account shrink.

Ha ha, I can’t afford either!
