OK so 3 days into it and I may have to quit snuffing. The first snuff is great. Love the scent and buzz. But shortly there after my nose closes up. Allergic I guess? Any tips old-timers?

B

Oh nose! Have your tried a neti pot? I get stuffy from time to time with/without snuff and it seems to do wonders. I also take extra time in the shower to clean the remaining residue inside my nose and give a good blow.

W

Your new to it, I messed myself up for two weeks at first. Back off and get some softer snuff, stay away from menthol for awhile, use a netti pot. Get some Toque rose snuff, or some subtle snuff, stay away from the scotches too. Give it time, moderate. Takes a little while to master.

J

My tip would be to search this forum’s comments on stuffy noses.

B

neti pot x100, brilliant devices.

Which reminds me I need more saline salt… They really do work wonders. I have had serious sinus isses due to smoking. The snuff over time, I have gotten used too.

X

You can use kosher salt until you get the fine ground stuff. Its got enough purity. Just use a half teaspoon instead of the normal quarter teaspoon due to the courseness.

D

Did not know that. The local CVS pharm started sellin neti pots a while back, came with 40 pre-measured saline packets for 11 bucks. Refill packs which I think have 60 packets in them are only like 7 I think so Ill prolly get over there tomorrow, I dont use it everyday, only when I feel like I need it. Or when I want to get a good clean out.

X

I ususally buy the 10 oz tub of Neti salt. It runs about $10-$12.

J

Heh, I started all wrong, started with Garrett Scotch and nearly blew the top of my head off… I bought a neti pot years ago, before I started snuffing. Funny thing is, I haven’t really needed it SINCE I started snuffing. But everybody’s nose is different!

S

Yea, I started snuffing at the height of allergy season, and I think that some of my congestion was due to my nose becoming accustomed to snuff; but it’s not an issue anymore (and neither are the allergies!). Some have found that they are sensitive to a particular ingredient in some of their snuffs. Menthol and bergamot are common culprits. I agree with Juxtaposer’s advice too; there’s much knowledge to be gleaned from past posts. Good luck.

T

Sometimes I just pinch and shove and rub, and not even use a sniff.

R

Well I’m doing better. I was using the American Peach snuff with some menthol and camphor mixed in. One or both of those ingredients was causing the stuffiness. Too bad I love how both of them feel. But I tried the plain Peach snuff and there was no stuffiness. So I’m gonna order some flavored snuff from Toque and see what happens. Wish me luck

X

You should have good luck with Toque. Make sure you get Toque’s Peach. Its the best Peach snuff around. For a great camphor snuff, try Wilson’s Camphor and Mild.

S

if anything, it was probably the menthol the was causing you to get stuffed up. Someone here even came up with a name for it, its PMRC (Paradoxical Menthol Rebound Congestion). The menthol helps clear your nose out, but then your nose “rebounds” to protect itself, causing the mucous to come on even stronger.

L

Personally I don’t use a neti pot, I just regularly blow my nose and, as bipolarbear1968 said earlier, I spend time in the shower clearing my nose out

J

ya it sucks to get clogged up… I just recently got mccrystals o&g not to long ago and it probably would have been my everyday snuff:( , its really good stuff , the only problem is that it clogs me up so bad about 10 min after … I wish i didnt have that problem because I really like it.

J

Unfortunately, for a lot of people menthol has a tendency to inflame the nasal mucosa, leading to blockage after repeated use. I’m no exception; a couple of toots of O&G is good for clearing the sinuses, but after that it’s gotta be Scotch or the whole ruddy works gets clogged up…

T

I also think amount, and how often can play a role. if I just use a minimal little dropping of snuff off the back of my hand, I am OK, compared to a massive noseload, and then if I wait a little while between snuffs, I am better than if I did it non-stop.

W

I seem to be lucky as regards menthols blocking me up. I can use menthol snuffs all day and not get blocked up unless it is the last pinch at night. For some reason if that is a menthol it’ll clog me up, if its not I’m fine. Stefan

M

^^^I’m the same way…no menthols at bed but otherwise I can go all day, even waxy Poschl snuffs.

D

I’m finding I get PMRC at night with Hedges L.260. Could be the time of year (mold season). I’m laying off it for a while then I’ll try to re-introduce it perhaps in the morning or at lunch.

H

It could just be initial reactions to a new foreign substance in your nose. Given time, your sinuses may become more tolerant. re: Neti pot – Get some SEA SALT from your local supermarket. It’s a lot cheaper and it’s the same stuff. You may want to try a NeilsMed Sinus Rinse squeeze bottle (available at most pharmacies.) They allow you to force the flow and not have to depend on gravity.

T

I found out last night that the two Toque’s I just got tend to clog me up a bit. Tube Rose afterwards leaves me right as rain though. It seems Scotches are just all around awesome, well at least this one, since it’s the only one I’ve snuffed so far. It also keeps my nose clear all day long. Big fan.

S

Have to say that for me, most often the culprit is first menthol, then to a lesser degree one of the snuffs that are moistened with oils or ghee. I too LOVE the initial feel of the menthols, but the rebound sucks… I also like the ‘nose feel’ of the ‘oiled’ versions since for me the aromas seem to last even longer in the nose. Again, bummer…
