Stuffy Nose?

Hey all. I am a very new snuffer, and I am currently using Toque snuff to help me quit cigarettes. But I find that it gives me a stuffed-up nose, almost feeling like I have a cold. I think I might be doing something wrong, like sniffing too deep. Any thoughts?

Your sinuses will eventually get cleaned out using snuff. Until then you may have loosened gunk to deal with. Another thing to know is the menthol rebound effect. As far as doing anything wrong, well it’s practically impossible with snuffing. There is good, better, and best but it all boils down to the preferences that you develop for yourself. You are going to have a lot of different things come to your attention because you are snuffing. You will find this forum very helpful.

I love to use menthols, but the finer, drier the snuff the better it does on my sinuses. It seemed a little counter-intuitive to me, but I just rolled with it.

I find that my sinus’s run better when drinking rum or whiskey with snuffing

We are all different and react differently, at least to a degree. There are a lot of us though that really like the initial ‘feel’ of a mentholated snuff. Instantly feels like it is clearing the sinuses and enables us to experience the nasal passages in a new way. The flip side is that often there is some kind of reaction causing the tissues in the nose to swell, causing that stuffed up feeling. I do not have the same problem if I gravitate toward the toasts, naturals or scotches. But I love the others as well. So, by pacing self and spreading out my use of menthols, I am gradually beginning to be able to use them a bit more often. Good luck!!

@Jackie_Bones I used to have the same problem with the stuffiness to the point I could only breathe through my mouth. After reading alot of advice here I found that the key for me is making sure I place the snuff in my nose before sniffing lightly. This seems to be easier with a snuff spoon but pinching can work too. So I hold my breath, place the spoon in my nose and l breath lightly (or heavily, depending on snuff type) or sniff. This avoids snuff in the back of my throat and it actually helps my nose decongest instead of becoming a stuffy mess. BTW the spoon or pinch should be just inside the nose, but do what works best for you. Hope this helps.

I agree about the menthol snuffs, I find them really hard to take, as my nose feels more blocked rather than less, whereas Wilson’s of Sharrow’s Jockey Club has become my just-before-bed snuff, as the unmentholated, finely ground, perfumed snuff pens up my nasal passages a treat. So, if it’s menthol snuffs doign that it might be worth trying other types. That’s the good thing about the cost of snuff, can you iamgine a cigarette smoker having twenty different brands of cigs on the go?

Get a good medicated snuff, that will fix you right up.

I enjoy a menthol on cold crisp mornings or in a humid climate and never during the hot dry summers… As for an everyday I stick to other snuffs such as, Tom Buck, a good scotch, Dholakia white, ect… Using a mentholated snuff as an all day everyday will by evening make you feel as though your nose is plugged…It could be what oils and such are used in the snuff your using try other manufacturers…

UPDATE: It would appear that my issue of having a stuffed nose was merely a beginner problem, as I think I was snuffing way too much at a time and now, with smaller and fewer pinches, I’m breathing just find. Also picked up some Silver Dollar Raspberry which contains menthol, and it has worked wonders on my nose.

I use the silver dollar original every morning currently to clear my stuffed nose and open everything else up for the day.

Take a good hit of rooster or Bruton and it will clear right up. It may not last forever but there’s always more Rooster & Bruton ah?
