What are the strongest unflavoured snuffs available, and what would you consider the best tasting? I like strong and smokey flavours in almost anything, so I would like some more snuffs which taste only of tobacco. I like dark tobaccos which taste like tobacco. What do you reccomend I try next?

Most of the Bernard line has good strong and smokey tobacco flavors. Civette Extrafien, Alt Offenbacher Köstlich, and Gekachelter Virginie Dunkel are some of my favorites. Samuel Gawith Princes Dark is very good, as is Wilsons Princes. They’re both reasonably plain. Actually a bunch of the SGs should make you happy.

Taxi and Ntsu

I’m not sure about strongest in terms of nicotine, but I’ve fallen in love with SG’s London Brown and Black Rappee for strong plain tobacco goodness.

Toque quit is the first one that comes to mind for me but I’ve never tried any of the ones listed above.

You might like McChrystal’s S’nuff, meant to be a smokers, plain tobacco snuff, and Toque Quit, another strong plain snuff. Also Toque original and the WoS range of SP’s are good plain snuffs. I’ve lost count of the snuffs I’ve tried and I tend to think there’s not a great difference in nicotine (not that I can detect anyway) in most of them. I think some just offer a quicker uptake of nic due to grind and preperation, plus the sensation of burn that goes with some of them.

S’nuff was a let down to me. A finely ground, dry SP. I suppose it’s okay, but not what I expected. Actually if you look at Nicotine content, Brutons is the strongest. I think Navy Plain and RR Mills Plain tie for about third or fourth place. Red Seal falls between them and Brutons. I use both Navy Plain and RR Mills Plain (I think they are the same thing with different labels, identical in statistics and to me the same in taste, and most people don’t realize their strength in both unpronated nicotine and overall nicotine content because they are comparatively easy on the nose. Rooster has a lot less nicotine than these.

Bruton or Rooster! I love the smokey taste of both!

In my humble opinion, Helme’s Square is plain to me. A bit smokey, but plain nontheless.

I agree with bipolarbear on Square. Starr Scotch and Toque Quit are good choices too.

I don’t even know if I can get the Starr locally. I’m courious now, I have a quest for the weekend.

And don’t forget F&T Santo Domingo. It’s a tossup between that and Taxi which is strongest and tastiest of the straight baccy snuffs I’ve tried. Haven’t yet had a go at any of the American Scotches, so can’t comment on those, but plan to try them soon. So far, if I had to choose only one snuff it would be the SD. Great stuff, and the coolest packaging of them all.

I’d say the strongest plain snuff I’ve tried taste wise anyway is London Brown by SG. I got a fresh tin of this from Snuffstore this week and must say I’m impressed. You must try this fresh and moist as I can imagine it could become pretty harsh when it is dried out. Get a tin from Snuffstore not the shitty tap out boxes. Stefan

If you want a strong plain tobacco snuff order some Thuoc Lao leaves from Toque and pulverize it. Smokey, tasty, and real strong. Plain as you get. If you want a hurtin, wet it with just a bit of Bicarb. This stuff is so underrated as a great snuff tobacco.

Thanks Iggy, I responded earlier but the post disappeared. You are indeed a truly valuable member here and very gracious. I’m trying to get a female friend of mine down in Vancouver to try snuff as a substitute for cigs and you and Carol have figured in my remonstrances when she has demured on the basis that it might not be right for a lady to snuff. I also read her the writing on a can of F&T. If it was good enough for the Duchess of Kent…

In pre-feminist times, taking snuff was the only tobacco use that was considered proper for ladies. Women who smoked were seen as scandalous harlots. Have your female friend go to eBay and run a search for snuff boxes. There are a lot of antique ones that are obviously designed for women. Some women’s snuff boxes had a little chain attached to a ring they wore, so they wouldn’t lose their precious snuff.

Good tip, PSS, she’s into all that old time foofaraw anyhow.
