Strange Discovery the Other Day...

So as many of you know whether it be first hand or not, nasal snuff can help people quit smoking and can curb nicotine cravings blah blah blah But what I recently discovered is actually quite interesting. The other night at a party a few of my friends were smoking and being a little intoxicated I decided to have a cigarette with them. The strange thing is I didn’t get any of the “rush” or “buzz” that can usually be obtained with a cigarette. Now I haven’t smoked in well over a year, besides the occasional pipe, and have really only used snuff on a day to day basis. It seems that while I don’t feel a so called “rush” with snuff, I’m getting enough nicotine in my system to prevent even a rush from cigarettes which to me is quite strange because I only take about 10 pinches a day. Anyone else experienced similar affects?

Depending on the type of snuff you use and the size of your pinches, you’re taking in a fair bit of nicotine. The amount of nicotine you’re taking in with one cigarette is probably equivalent to a pinch or two, though I’m just guessing as I’ve never smoked. I do know that when I’m snuffing, I can take the occasional dip or chew without any adverse effects. If I put snuff down for a week or so, and try to take a dip, it makes me pretty dizzy. So you’re probably taking in more nicotine than you think!

Snuff is said to give the same nicotine as a cigarette in two pinches (see ‘how to save on your tobacco costs’ on youtube) I used to be a heavy smoker with a snuff habit, when I ditched the smokes when the smoking bans came in in the UK I found absolutely no problem in swithcing to snuff full time. Now I was the sort of smoker that would go insane after half an hour without, so I have no doubt that its the same kind of dose in a couple of pinches to the average cig. Like you, I can dip, chew or have the odd cigarette socially and feel no difference for it. One thing though, which has pretty much stopped me ever having a smoke is that the damn things taste so bad to the extent I want to clean my teeth after, so all in all I think you are spot on in what you say.

I have that same experience. More even when using Snus, which I use the whole day. I tried a ciggie 2 weeks ago and could almost only taste ( bah!) The burned paper, no effect at all. But that make sense after a few general ekstra stark I guess.

Apparently this 2 pinch theory is spot on. When i first strted snuffing i watched a youtube vid with a jacktard that was snuffing lines that would make George Jung cringe. I didn’t know any better and followed suit. About 5 minutes in my heart was pounding, i broke out in a horrid sweat, n proceded to present my latest eatings to the porcelain god. Since then after listening to much wiser i.e. old farts  i’ve learned just a little dab will do ya. I snuff about the size of a good sized pea in each nose hole n i’m good ta go. And this is after 20 some odd years of pack or two a day smoking of Newports.

Did you just call snuffster an old fart?

I still have the cig cravings, but recently started vaping to kick the butts. It’s worked out well so far, but when I was up late last night trying to put new paddles on my snowblower (very frustrating for a lunk with big fingers like me), I found myself fishing a nasty old butt out of the ashtray and smoking it out of desperation. And you know what? It was GOOD. And then I went back to my e-cig…

@Micheltn I think fogie fits snuffster better…lol!

wonderfull bastard works too. Then again in PA we let our friends know they’re our friends by insulting them. Something to do with geography really.

here in SC the filthier the insult…the closer the friend. funny how that works! ; )

I suspect the buzz from a cigarette has something to do with (1) being slightly in a state of nicotine withdrawal before lighting up; and (2) the nicotine blast from a cigarette hitting the brain a mere 7 seconds after the first drag. No other form of tobacco use gets such a large dose of nicotine to the brain so quickly as cigarettes. Other sorts of tobacco use may deliver the same amount of nicotine over time, but much more gradually. When someone first starts smoking cigarettes, that blast of nicotine becomes associated with the pleasurable sensations of nicotine addiction, and a smoker’s brain becomes entrained to it as a reward signal. But someone who uses snuff and/or snus regularly becomes accustomed to a fairly constant level of nicotine in the blood, which would make the peaks and troughs of nicotine blood level from cigarettes much less noticeable. Hence, no smoker’s rush.

Well said sir! I actually find i enjoy the slower onset of nicotine more pleasurable, not to mention the lack of ciggie stink!!

indeed cigarettes smell like shit!

Wish I could get enough nic from snuff and vaping to quit cigs once and for all. But I need those large doses of nic once in a while. Hell, I take snuff while smoking! It’s great. I do get tired of the lung drag from smoking though, and that’s my biggest impetus to quit. I’m working on it. Unfortunately I found that the high nic snuffs I’ve tried aren’t really to my taste, so I just make do. There’s enough snuff that I love that I can get through most of the day without smoking most of the time.

@ddavelarsen have you tried some some strong snus to help with the need for a larger dose of nic?

Did anyone try vaporising a good tobacco in a vaporiser like aromed or others like that?

Like a marijuana vaporizer? Like a Volcano or something? Nicotine doesn’t work the same as THC so I don’t believe Tobacco would behave the same way…

Ive noticed that since taking snuff the only time i get a nic craving is if i dont snuff for 2+ hours. When I was smoking 15 cigs a day i was craving about 45 mins.

When I smoke a cigarette, I’ve no buzz, other than a wave of disgust. Yet I smoke at least one a day. My girlfriend put it ever so beautifully: “I snuff because I like it. I smoke…because I hate it?”

The only reason i smoke is because i crave the feeling of it entering me. Not the nicotine itself.
