in my last order a got a tin of Viking Dark which has quickly become my go to snuff. This was my first tin of a straight snuff and im now very keen to try some more! any recommendations welcome…

M

Definitely give the Viking Blonde a try, it’s a very high quality snuff imo.

J

Definately like the Viking brand snuffs. Have tried all, but Thor’s Hammer. Enjoy them straight or blended.

F

I’d recommend Samuel Gawith Kendal Brown Original (since 1792 no less) and Samuel Gawith Red Crest.

My Top 10 Natural Aroma Snuffs(in no particular order) 1. M de K Holandse Bolongaro: Cut hay and lemony Bright Virginia scent, with some rope-ish notes I assume left over from the carrotte storage at the mills. Great for Spring/Summer 2. SWS St. James Parish: Chocolate/coffee notes that settle into the green pepper perique note, high-ish nicotine, nice tonic for late Summer into early Autumn evenings. 3. WoS Irish High Toast #22: Toasted tobacco with nutty and salted butter notes, great in the heat of a Summer day. 4. Sternecker Staubinger: Fermented Brasil tobacco with a naturally occurring aroma of black walnuts, some dried fruit notes in the background. The only schmalzler I use year 'round. 5. Poschl Schmalzler Perlereuter: Another top notch schmalzler, smells like chocolate cake and coffee a real Wintertime after dinner treat. 6. Gawith Hoggarth Irish D: IMO best of the toasts 7. Samuel Gawith Irish D Light: Similar to GH Irish D but with a subtle honey under note 8. Samuel Gawith Black Rappee aka London Brown: Smells like pine tar, old leather, scotch whiskey and smoke all at once, fantastic! 9. Bernard Civette Extrafein: A hidden gem, oiled but not fermented blonde tobacco, complex wet hay scent with a nice smokey finish. 10. Swisher Starr Scotch: It’s a Toast, no it’s a Scotch. One thing is certain it’s got great toasty notes.

@md363‌ Oddly Viking Blonde was the only one of my last order I did not enjoy Good for mixing as well

D

Gota add, F&T HDT and toque natural toast

The Samuel Gawith unscented Crests; Blue, Red & Yellow are good, straight tobacco in what they call an “SP”. They must be referring to the grind/moisture, I can’t detect any scent in them at all. If you stumble on the scented versions you’ll end up with the “Lakeland” soapy scent that will leave a ghost in your nose for several hours.

H

Yep, love the SG Crest series. Assuming you’re not looking for fine, light toasts they’re worth a go. Someone here said the Blue Crest is like a cup of tea in the nose, and I’d say that’s about right - think normal cuppa, like Twining’s Everyday, if you’re in the UK. Red Crest is similar, but richer, more like a good Assam tea, but Yellow Crest is different, in that it reminds me of Toque Quit, but not as fine and light. That suits me as I find the Toque grind a bit too easy to sniff too far. All of them are lovely, though. The one thing I wish is that they actually had coloured crests in the 25G labels - they do piccies for the Black Coffee, Vanilla and Elmo’s Reserve, so why not the Crests! They’d look really classy then…

N

Bernard Gekachelter Virginie is a great plain snuff

B

Thanks for the advice guys, new order going in shortly!

M

Poschler’s Doppel D is a really good one.

F

After ordering a few schmalzers, I decided to order some other moist snuffs and tried viking dark as well. I agree with you. I just got hooked.

I’m a big fan of viking dark too. I threw in a 25g tin of Thor’s hammer in my last order and if you like Dark, you’ll probably like Thor’s Hammer too. It’s got a similar smokiness, with more of a slight campfire aspect, and that virginia sweetness. If I’m not mistaken it’s a blend of the tobacco used in dark and another Virginia tobacco. The grind is slightly finer and it isn’t as dark, which makes for less mess. The nicotine kick is at least on-par if not above the Viking Dark. Viking is made by Samuel Gawith and they make a lot of good plain tobacco snuffs that have been recommended already (like the crests) and it is hard to go wrong with those. It’s quite interesting how different each plain snuff can be. I’d say unscented is a more accurate description than plain. Although Straight-up tobacco snuffs might be an even better term since unscented might mislead people into thinking these snuffs are scentless when they are far from it.

M

NB Madras. Good, plain tobacco, big nic hit and very cheap. My every day snuff.

S

Lately I tried the FCV 250 and FCV 400 (flue-cured-virgina tobacco) snuffs from The Molens (Jaap Bes), availible in 400 and 250 microns sieving. Pure vigina, tastes similar to the light tobacco for self stuffed cigarettes. They both taste the same but the FCV 250 is easier to snuff. Another masterpiece from Mr. Bes!

F

Don’t forget those powerful South African pure tobacco snuffs: Taxi Red, Babaton Blue, and NTSU Black These seem to be pure tobacco to me and have a great nic hit–if you don’t mind the coarse grind.

J

I’m yet to try either, but I want to try WoS Natural and Toque Natural. Anybody have experience with either? I’m guessing they both have a natural tobacco scent?

G

I think Toque Natural is great!

C

Bernards Gekachelter Virginie dunkel Sir Walter Scott’s Moro Moro Ludwig Sternecker Echt Fresco Abraxas St. Casura WE Garrett sweet NC Madras Those are the ones I could think of, a little from a few different countries. They are all good and plain tobacco.

M

Bernard’s Gekachelter, SG unscented Crests, Old Mill Pure Virginia Toast, SG Irish D Light. F&T HDT, Bernard Knower(sp?)

H

Samuel Gawith McCombie. That was the nicest plain tobacco snuff I’ve ever had and I’m still gutted that they discontinued it. Bring back the McCombie, even if for a limited edition run, that’s what I say! :((

A

@Jim - Imho WoS Natural and Toque Natural are top snuffs. Not only are they good for mixing, they also have a quite decent nic hit. The scent is light and fresh. I really like how the pure tobacco aroma is developing slowly while the pinch is lingering. Butter and some kind of herbal freshness comes to mind, like dew or simply the smell of the air in the early morning. I enjoy them both really much but I would prefer the WoS Natural over the Toque.

D

Old Mill Pure Virginia Toast and F&T HDT for me

F

Havana toast, HDT, om Tennessee toast and Lundy foot

B

Thanks for all your suggestions guys, im really enjoying blue crest at the moment but still love Viking Dark for the smokeyness!

N

7 year old Toque natural toast! The goods!!!

M

I forgot to mention SG London Brown. Very nice rappee style, similar to Black Rappee. And as you’ve discovered, Blue Crest unscented. Thats a fine snuff for sure. Too bad for me I’m out, but I have Red and Yellow Crests still( just a couple grams).

R

SG crests I believe, SS black magic, SS traditional SP. I think those are all tobacco.

D

I agree with @Aromanic Toque Natural is a great plain tobacco snuff

B

Old Mill Acadia. The gourmet cajun.

S

SSS Superior Navy Flake, 3 different Virginias/

S

Bernard’s Virginie is sublime in my opinion.

B

Toque Rustica - Straight Up Tobacco - coarse or fine

J

Wilsons of Sharrow Natural. A bit tricky to take for a beginner, but good. It smells like a nice cigar.

H

Quite a few votes have been for Toasts of one kind or another, but I wasn’t sure if they really belonged in this thread since Toasts aren’t “straight up” natural tobacco. Toasting sure makes a difference to the flavour. So far no-one has mentioned Molens Latakia Ao 1860 which is the base tobacco for their latakia range; a perfect complement to their FCV 250 and 400 (plain Virginia) snuffs.

N

Try the SG London Brown. Natural as it gets. IMO.

H

One that hasn’t been mentioned yet and is different to anything else spoken of so far - as far as I know - is Bernard Alt Offenbacher köstlich. I’ve only has this one once, and enoyed it 'til it ran out, so I really should order it again. It’s a blend of three tobbacos, and has, to me, a kind of sherberty scent to it.

H

I have to echo what a couple people said about SG blue crest! I got the 25g tin, and I fell in love with the stuff. Being used to finer, drier snuff it’s still taking a bit to get used to on the take, but I don’t mind getting the practice in at all! Grass, hay, flowers (but NOT floral), slightly sweet too, but in a very natural way. Taken indoors, the scents are pretty subtle, but taking it outdoors and the scents really open up on you. I have heard people say that nicotine is mild in the crest series, but I would disagree. It’s more of a “creeper”, like most of the OMs I’ve tried so far. By no means an N-bomb, but about five minutes in it finds it’s way out of your face and into your head in a very satisfying way. This is what snuff should be, in my opinion.

T

I’m surprised SG Black Rappee wasn’t mentioned

F

If you like natural all tobacco snuffs, I believe you owe it to yourself to try the newly re-released version of Old Mill Olde English Toast. It is nothing short of amazingly good. Has anyone else tried it yet? This stuff is so good that I honestly believe that flavorings would detract from its quality and flavor.

D

@fredh i had the last batch and it was a wonderful smokey natural snuff, whats this years release like?

S

If you are grinding your own snuff, Newminster Superior Navy Flake pipe tobacco translates into an amazing bright all tobacco snuff. Don’t know if is it is completely without any added stuff, but the result is incredible. Great toasted also.

H

I’m surprised SG Black Rappee wasn’t mentioned

Perhaps, like grapes into wine, Black Rappee has evolved so far along from what it was it’s hard to believe where its origins lie…

F

@fredh i had the last batch and it was a wonderful smokey natural snuff, whats this years release like?

Hi @Derek_007, I was just talking about the re-released new batch of Olde English Toast with @chefdaniel today. I told him that the new batch seemed just a bit sweeter and richer but still had all the great qualities of the original. I told him it seemed to me to be even better than the first batch. He agreed saying he thought so as well. I ordered a bunch of it from Daniel today, along with more Antebellum and Rat Bastard.

N

GH Kendal Brown. Natural as it gets. .

S

We need to add Dholakia Sparrow…wonderful and exotic…and seems to be just a tobacco blend
