So, as I start collecting more snuffs, I’m finding that some are very lightly fragranced (you have to open the tin or box to smell them) and some that are quite strongly scented (you can smell them through the tin and a plastic bag from 2 meters away). Is there a good way to store the snuffs together without the strong fragrances (menthol, anise, clove) being absorbed by the lighter-fragranced snuffs? Or should I just store each strong snuff separately in it’s own little nook? I’d prefer to keep them all in one place, but I worry about maintaining some of the more delicate scents. For now, they are all in their original metal tin or plastic box.
I just pile all mine up in this plastic container I have that has a lid that clamps on, and place this in the drawer on my desk I keep the computer on. Anything more precise or elaborate will be impractical for me. Tom502
@the littlest ninja: I think of your solution lies in that you already figured out some are stronger, maybe stagger the similar scents like a scent spectrum with the least corruptible in the middle. I went ahead and invested on some cheap baby food from Walmart and those seal like a dream. couldn’t tell if it’s Ganga if not for the little label I cut off and stuck on there. right next to Sparrow or even the Bernard Brasil Feinst which would be a disaster picking up a rose scent. love that Feinst.
Cigar boxes are popular. wood boxes and small humidors are nice. I have an SP box, a menthol box, a schmalzler box, a scotch box, a toast box, a fruit box, a chocolate box, a flower box, and a mint box among the odd jars, tins, ceramic coffee crocks, clay pots, and small bottles. Transfer of scents can be enjoyable, but it’s mostly annoying.
squarefiend I can’t argue with you but don’t the carrots and peaches and stuff in your baby food get the snuff soaking wet LOL
If you don’t wany any cross over of flavours store seperate. You don’t need anything fancy, as long as its airtight. Well scrubbed and dried peanut jars are as good as anything, Ive used em for years.
I have a few tins of Toque snuffs that arrived (thank you postmaster!) bent, so the lid wouldn’t seal properly. I noticed the aroma leaking from these so much that they smelled up my entire closet! I have solved this problem by buying some travel sized hair conditioner bottles. I used the conditioner up and then thoroughly washed them, even using Camelbak cleansing tabs to get the smell out of the plastic. I suggest conditioner bottles over shampoo because conditioner seems to be less fragrant than shampoo, thus making it a little easier to get the smell out of the plastic. The best thing about these Toque tins, the labels came off easily and cleanly and I was able to reapply them to their new ‘snuff bottles.’ The baby jar idea is a good one too, but just a little too big for my little snuff storage box. Now if there were glass conditioner bottles available, that would be perfect!
Anyone that has traded with me has gotten my papermart tins. http://www.papermart.com/Product%20Pages/Product.aspx?GroupID=14283&SubGroupID=14284&ParentGroupID=19037#14284
I just keep my snuff in a plastic tub too, and haven’t had any problems with flavors combining.
If your worried about flavours combining, sling the airtight tubs in the freezer.
Ahh, miamimark: forget what I said earlier. Mark’s tins are very nice! Easy to pinch from. Very much like Toque tins only heavier. I think if you are going to use something plastic, make sure it is food grade. I have some in film canisters now (recycle code #2) Not my first choice but they are airtight and dark. Small glass medicine bottles (brown) might be good too. Also smashboxes sold on the vendors sites are good for small amounts.
I’m sure this is the stupidest question but why dark bottles Xander? Does sunlight affect snuff?? I store mine in a dark box but am just curious.
yeah, at least from what I’ve read on here, you want to keep it out of direct light. Brown glass will protect it more. Most old medicine bottles are brown anyway. Also why I won’t buy beer that comes in green (or colorless) bottles. Those idiots at Heineken and Rolling Rock are obessesed with their green color for brand identity, won’t switch to brown. Good thing their beers are crap anyway or I’d think I was missing something. Am I going off on a tangent again?
Maybe that explains why Rolling Rock has barely any flavor and why Heineken is gross! I love Guiness and it happens to come in VERY dark brown bottles!
heineken is good when it has turned which never happens here :(. It isn’t great but it doesn’t hold well in the green. Rolling rock sucks totaly anyways.
I like heineken well enough. I’m not sure why though considering it smells like skunk.
The only one I had change is some Toque Peanut Butter. I stored it with some fruit flavors and it made it rather strange.
Guinness is the best. Not only will light not pass through it, it absorbs light. Kind of like a black hole. Generally, I prefer a beer that when I drink it, I can’t see my fingers on the other side of the glass. However, I do make exceptions for some high quality ones. Heineken does or did make a dark, which was…tolerable, although somewhat bland. Anywho, I need to stop blabbing about beer and get back to posting about snuff.
I finally got around to taking my snuff out of my big plastic tub, and into cigar boxes. My local tobacco store sells their empty boxes for $2 each, so I picked up a bunch today. Now instead of a big mess of snuff, I’ve got it organized. Now I can actually find something when I want a pinch of it.
If I may be so bold as to make a suggestion, I would recommend storing the individual tins and plastic boxes in ziplock baggies within the cigar boxes or you risk scent transference. It did happen to me once, with a non-menthol snuff picking up the menthol from it’s neighbour inside a wooden box. It also helps keep them fresh.
