I have read many nice tips here about the proper storage. I understand it is quite good to use air tight containers and I know many of you like them made of glass. In spite of this it is not always possible to use the high-end equipment. What about packing the original tin into a plastic film used for packing food? I guess it could prolong the desired quality because when well packed it could be really air tight too… ?
Aluminum foil would be less permeable. For glass I use large peanut butter jars for bulk.
the reason we prefer glass is because plastics (particularly food bags…) are far too permeable. i wouldnt call glass jars high end equipment… its not much to get good jars. i use mason/kilner two-piece lid jars for bulk/ longer term storage, and a combination of airtight screw top, clip top and pushfit top jars for shorter term. having said that, for shorter term, a few companies make good enough containers anyway. like the SG 25g tins.
Do you mean to vacuum seal the tins in plastic? if you have that ability I suppose it would work. It won’t stop snuff rusting through the tins or aluminum from decay. This is your investment protect it as you feel fit. Glass is good insurance for a fresh product. Instead of throwing your glass jars in the recycle bin. recycle them yourself, baby food jars work great because they are small and have good lids, jelly jars are good too. You can vacuum seal Jars with pop lids Heat in microwave for 99 seconds then immediately fill with product and twist on lid when the glass cools the lid will pop and will be air tight, Use oven mitts when handling hot glass.
Wow, baby food jars! It is a great idea! I have plenty of them! The only one doubt about the process is the heating. Doesn’t that start some harmful processes in the tobacco? I have received a fresh tin of J&H Wilsons SP and it is amazing, I am simply afraid of putting it into a hot jar… My idea is to have it properly stored and approx. threetimes a month taking from it to my smaller tin ready for snuffing.
@Welblaud I used baby food jars too because of their small size and availability. I ended up throwing them all out though because the rubber lining on the lid makes it difficult to open and close. I think the rubberized liners on the inside are great, but you have to crank them down to get a good seal, and then taking them off again is equally difficult. Not all baby food jars are the same but the batch I bought was too much trouble. I also wound up cross threading a few jars by accident ( it was easier than you think ) and creating a leak in the seal…so I’m not using them anymore. The canning jars will be my next investment should I need long term storage again. Something like this but smaller. http://www.amazon.com/Ball-Quilted-Jelly-Canning-Pack/dp/B000VTSYA8
And what about these?
@Welblaud $15 for 6 is grossly overpriced. These are considerably less expensive: http://www.specialtybottle.com/straightsidedclearglassjar2ozwstdblacklid.aspx
It seems great, unfortunately the company does not ship abroad
And what about these?
Those look like a good size for entry level storage.

Even nicer!!
My stash has all been vacuum sealed via a seal a meal machine and bags.I feel confident that it should keep for many many years this way.
