Dear Fellow Snuffers, Recently I purchased several empty glass bottles which were originally used to store an American brand of snuff. I also purchased several rubber stoppers which fit the opening in the top from a laboratory supply store. I haven’t used the bottles yet because I notice that the stoppers have a distinct rubber smell and I am concerned that when I store snuff in the bottles that it will pick up the rubber smell from the stoppers. Does anyone else use rubber stoppers in glass bottles, and if so, do you notice that the snuff picks up the smell of the rubber stopper or not? If you could share your experience with me I would greatly appreciate it. Thanks, Derik

Rubber was used on every bottle of every product, as washers on ceramic stoppers, prior to better technology around glass packaging and plastic bottles - it was used to make seals because it didn’t taint. Rubber does have a smell but I doubt it would pass on any odour. I wouldn’t think many people, if any, are storing like this so there probably won’t be much experience around to give you a definite yea or nay, just try a bit.

Those bottles originally had cork stoppers. The cork end was sealed with wax.

I use cork stoppers in my porcelin snuff flasks.
