I’ve read others suggestions on buying different jars for decanting snuff from/to for long term storage, but was wondering if how I’m storing my snuff now would be fine. I’ve been putting the open tins of snuff in sandwich size zip-lock bags and placing all the bagged tins stacked in glass clip jars, and plan on buying another dozen or so 25g tins and storing the same way. Will this hold up for the long term, or should I just invest in some storage?
Baggies are fine, Until you can afford some air tight glass jars. I like jars, I can see what I have. And there is only one lid I have to deal with. I had stored tobacco in the wire bale jars and the seal failed. Plastic is permeable But should keep moisture levels for some time. Some tins rust from the inside out. I had found with some Wilson’s and McCrystals tins this happened. The F&T are aluminum won’t rust but it’s what alzheimer’s sufferers have on the brain,I don’t trust aluminum. Glass is best. Some use baby food jars if you know someone who has a baby recycle them to your collection. .It is your investment protect it as you see fit.
decent glass jars are best… my clip tops and screw tops are essentially crap, but ill continue to use them since its such a pain messing with the lid of the mason/kilner i have for my bulk. of course if you are going through it quick enough its ok.
The one thing I’d like to add to this is, if you store different scented snuffs in a plastic ziploc, you could get cross scenting. When I first started I kept all my snuffs in their shipped containers in a plastic ziploc. A few months later all the scents had evolved into a terrible stink. I then separated them to help them clear off but the damage was done. So short term it’s fine and I would certainly separate the snuffs if you can. Large bulk purchases for long term storage have the best results in glass - amber or violet if available. I also just keep my snuffs 25g or less in their original containers. Toque cans seem to hold up to months in this kind of storage with no problem.
@thorgrimnr They are all in separate bags. I thought that they might cross scent each other otherwise. You think, they could still leak scent through the bags?
@bryanikon have you received snuff shipped in bubble envelopes? you can smell snuff threw them and the tins have yet been open. This is the one I use 4235B03 .here is where you can get them http://www.freundcontainer.com/wide-mouth-packer-glass-bottles/p/v4232B07/ 480 is a good starting point.
@basement_shaman Yeah I’ve seen you post links to these jars before in other threads. The only reason I wouldnt get them now is that 25g of snuff fits in less than an a 1oz jar. I dont think I’ll be buying any huge bulk orders until I find “The Snuff” or two or three or four… Also the shape at the lid is little narrow for decanting to snuff boxes, but I could just be nit-picking now… I was looking at these jars http://www.specialtybottle.com/cobaltblueglassjar17oz50mlwstdblacklid.aspx They have the same issue as the others, holding over an oz, but they have a wider mouth. I guess I will just get some jars to store them in…Idk if I’ll need 480 though
@bryanikon yes they could cross scent even across separate bags as all the plastic is permeable by the scent molecules, mind you it would take longer. I used to store my 25g Toques in baby food jars but it’s really not necessary as the Toque tins are excellent. In fact the baby jars were cheap, but the caps on them are difficult to take off and on due to the rubber lined lids. So cross threading is an issue, then your seal isn’t any good and then air etc… so if you are just sampling a bunch of small containers, in my experience keep them separate on a shelf or something and use the containers they come in. The only manufacturers container which failed before I even got to it was the Samuel Gawith Tap boxes…they seem to have major issues, and you can find loads of people here saying the same thing. Oiled German snuffs in tap containers is fine, Poschl and Bernard for example. English snuffs moistened with water dry out in the tap boxes. As far as I’m aware English snuffs are not permitted to oil their snuffs.
The opening is the same size as the Abraxas glass jars. lid is 1.5/8 inches yours are 1.3/4 an entire 1/8 inch larger. I just think they are a good deal at $.49 each. I have over 100 four ounce jar with 25gram and less and the snuff is as fresh as the day I opened it. Now I just buy the two ounce jars they fill over 3/4 the way up with 25 grams and the 30 gram tins fill it within 3/8 inch of the top. I’m liking the 9 ounce in that style for pipe tobacco storage I will be book marking that page! Good luck in what ever you decide.
