I have a quick question about storing bulk snuff. In the recent scare around the impending EU tobacco directive, I bought a serious load of WoS IHT 22 in bulk. So far, I have left these in their plastic 500g drums, also sealed in plastic wrap. Given that these are toasts, is this adequate for storage? Should I be looking at some serious investment in glass jars?
You need to transfer the snuff to good quality airtight glass jars imo. I’ve left WoS bulk for 2 years before jarring up and noticed a decline in freshness. Maybe that would happen even in glass, but why take the chance? Nowadays, I jar up immediately upon receival.
I kept my tub of WoS CoC as is in my cellar for over 2 years, there is like maybe 1/8 left and its still as fresh as the day I got it.
I don’t trust plastic, air can still pass through and it is a petroleum product, plastic is permeable to certain vapors.Glass can break if dropped or struck but give me piece of mind my investment stays fresh and safe.
try mason jars, i keep my biggest load of snuff in a large clip top, but i dont really have bulk. i reckon itll be gone before it deteriorates. also… what directive… you got me worried now.
Thanks everyone. @Firestarter0, the scare should be over by now. But late last year, a first draft of the new EU tobacco directive was published (which legislates tobacco in the EU) in which it was proposed that all smokeless tobacco be banned. This directive has now, after strong criticisms, been revised so nasal snuff is off the hook it seems. They are still trying to effectively ban e-cigs though, and maintaining the ban on snus for both of which there is absolutely no evidence base. These people have no scruples. The rationale seems to be, that if they can ban a tobacco product, they will. Nevermind if it is a far safer alternative than cigarettes that helps many people quit!
The one pound WoS drums have far inferior lids than the half pound ones. The half pounders screw on tight, and the one pounders just snap on, but don’t seem tight. I’ve transferred the couple I have to glass bail and clamp jars. Nice and tight, but clean the gaskets and rim before closing again.

As I mentioned elsewhere on this forum, in my opinion, the more popular snuff becomes the more likely it will be included and no longer exempted in directives and acts like this one.
By all means, store your snuff how you want. I however haven’t done anything, and I have snuff that is nearly two years old, and it hasn’t lost anything.
