Hello, I’m new and still finding the best way to store snuff. After reading some of the threads here, I put my new snuff into small mason jars, the smallest Ball jars I could find, which can hold a little more than a 25gram tin of snuff. I thought all was well; however, after a week or so all the snuffs were losing flavor. The scents grew more dull, and after a few months they are very faded. I’m not sure why this is so. One guess I have is that because I would open a jar numerous times a day to take some snuff I thus exposed the snuff in the jar to too much air. Should I have instead placed a smaller portion of the snuff in a snuff box in order to open the larger jar less often? Does anyone have any suggestions concerning how to keep the snuff flavorful? And is there any way to restore the flavor once lost? Thanks!
Air is the enemy, Smaller air tight jars are best, You can restore moisture with different methods, but to restore scent to original is harder if not impossible. I use 4235B03 http://www.freundcontainer.com/wide-mouth-packer-glass-bottles/p/v4232B07/ I have hundreds of snuffs still as fresh since decanting. Best investment I ever made! I rotate through my horde and exhale hot breath into the jar upon closing; pushes out the air and adds a bit of moisture for storage. You may want to try used baby food jars if you can get them free from a friend or relative. These smash boxes are also inexpensive http://www.freundcontainer.com/plastic-attached-lid-containerspp/p/v2924B01/Decant into many smaller smash boxes and refill when you order more snuff. Personally I don’t care for smash boxes for long term storage. but if you only have a few favorites they should suffice. Don’t forget to label them with contents and a date. Flavorless snuff don’t bin it. Mix it in with some stronger snuff. Or scent it yourself with natural or artificial food flavoring. http://shop.lorannoils.com/
@snusandsnuff I too am very new but you are on the right track. You don’t want to open you jars too often, unless you are using it. Going with a smaller snuff box would be wise when you are able to. Until I can do that I have only opened 2 snuffs decanted 1 (the other is in a tap box tine) and only open the jar to use. I am sure others here who have been at it longer can be of more help.
Save your used tins or get some online for about 75 cents each. Fill those for a day or two’s worth and keep your jars sealed, dark and cool. Every time you open the jar your snuff deteriorates ever so slightly.
I happen to use larger jars that I keep the open tins in, several tins to a jar. I keep the menthols separate. No problems yet. I do strongly suggest getting a snuffbox: http://woodensnuffbox.com
Has anyone ever tried these? http://www.reiss-laborbedarf.de/uploaded/image/shop/laborkatalog/20/00120\_304\_1\_big.jpg

This. Or, if you don’t want to carry around a full tin, the smallish (5g or 10g, not sure which) round plastic “snuff boxes” from MrSnuff work just as well - not ideal for long term storage, mind, but perfect to load with a few days’ worth of snuff. I load what I’ll need in the snuff box, close the original tin as tightly as I can and toss it right back into the mini-fridge. Lather, rinse, repeat (I’ve had tins open for several months this way and never noticed a discernible loss in aroma or in quality of experience.
