Starr

I received a 1.15 oz. tin of this in my last order from Nicotine Rush and I was very impressed. Anyone who wants to try an American snuff that is not sweet or smoky should give Starr a try. People have written that its smokiness is very subdued, but personally I do not smell or taste any at all–just pure tobacco. The colour is light brown and the grind is very fine. As far as I can tell, nothing has been added to this snuff for flavouring. I don’t think it is toasted, so the flavour is not buttery like HDT. It’s just a simple, straight tobacco snuff. The packaging reflects the flavour: black and white, no frills. I suspect this is a very low-selling snuff, surviving for a time due to regional familiarity and the low cost of production. I say this because as a dip, this snuff lacks flavour and I have to wonder if maybe local users of this snuff actually put it in their nose instead of their mouth. Scotch snuffs have survived due mostly to oral use, but it would be a rare person that sought out a dip with little or no flavour (though maybe smoking 50 bajilliion cigarettes has damaged my taste buds somewhat). Were it not for the red “Flav-r-gard” sticker this product looks like it should be in a museum replica of a 19th century general store. If anyone has ever seen this snuff in a store, I’d love to know where. I’m guessing it only sells in a handful of counties in Appalachia. Fans of straight, pure tobacco should order some Starr and help this wonderfully archaic scotch snuff survive a little while longer.

Maybe it’s too late … :frowning:

@OldBigWagon: it’s not too late–Mr. Snuff still has some for sale, and we don’t know for sure that it’s out of production. In fact, recent, persistent communication from one snuffhouse member to Swisher suggests that it is still being made. It’s pretty rare to see it for sale in a store, unless you live in Maryland or North Carolina.

@Mike_B: Reading the post to which you’re referring, I had understood that the Starr is no longer in production, if is not so, I’m very happy because the Starr is one of my favorite snuffs. I assume Starr in internal and external and I felt always the same smell until a few days ago, when, I assumed it in the countryside in a spring day…I have discovered a new snuff with a completely different smell! I do not know what it depends on this, perhaps the mild temperatures combined with a slight breeze. In conclusion, from that day I love it more than ever!!
