This is no doubt the smokiest American scotch snuff I have had to date. It comes in a plastic container with a snap down lid that keeps it fresh. It is dry and very fine milled typical of most scotches. I would say that it has a high nicotine hit and a moderate burn, followed by a nice mesquite campfire scent. It reminds me of Bruton snuff but is a darker brown with more smoke flavor. A slow and gentle pinch for a beginning snuffer, this can easily make you cough. Square is an occasional snuff for me and one of my favorite scotches. I highly recommend it if you enjoy a strong nic hit with heavy smokiness.
This is by far my favorite scotch. So much more flavor than other scotches…
@MrColcannon @saucy_jack I do love Square but have you ever tried Superior Scotch? I would say that the superior has just as strong a nicotine hit and maybe more smoky-ness. It is very similar to the Square but a little darker in color and the scent is just a little different. If you haven’t tried Superior you should definitely try it.
@md363 To be honest, as much as I like scotches, the too subtle variations don’t warrant buying ALL of them, although I have MOST of them. I shall consider this Superior scotch you recommend.
I bought both of the above mentioned while down south last summer and they were my first full on smokey plain scotches. (Prior to that I only had Railroad mills and a few sweet scotches). I prefer Superior, but only by a little bit. I remember when I first tried Square I wondered if it had Latakia in it due to the familiar campfire scent.
It a crying SHAME that HONEST Scotch is no longer made. This had the best smokey BBQ scent IMO. I have square and enjoy it daily. But honest is just a treat to do! from here on in. I will have to savor the flavor.
I’m with @saucy_jack, a scotch is pretty much a scotch, except for Garrett and Bruton they all smell the same to me for the most part. Superior is really good but it’s not much different from Square.
To me Square just has a depth to it I can’t explain, and using my one finger technique of sniffing allows me to experience it more completely. I lament the loss of Honest or any snuff, but I would be fine having only Square and some sweet scotches.
I actually do enjoy the variety in scotches. True they are all variations on a theme, but oh what a theme! I find Square, Superior and Three Thistle distinctive enough that I keep some of each on hand when I can. These are my top tier. I’m not too choked up about the loss of Honest (although I agree with Saucy Jack that the loss of any snuff is sad) because I always found it very similar to Garrett. I find Tops plain and Dental Mild pretty similar to each other, but they are from different companies, and sadly I can’t find either locally. Both are good mild plain ones though. Also Railroad Mills and Navy I find similar to each other but rather boring, in the mild and plain range. The US Smokeless ones are more acrid with Rooster and Standard close cousins but nice (and sadly lacking from my local availability), and Bruton being ridiculously acrid so that it’s unpleasant, though plentiful. X_X Then there is Starr which is so different that its almost not a scotch, but its so plain that it has a small appeal. This one too is not available locally, sadly. Well at least I can find my top three locally, so no complaints. Oh, I don’t really rate the sweets which can find a lot of here. They’re just not my taste.
I pretty much like all the scotches, favourites being three thistles, rooster, standard and bruton, but don’t much care for the sweets which I prefer to dip.
@md363 Yes, I have a tin of Superior Scotch and it is an excellent snuff. I had not tried Superior at the time I reviewed Square, but certainly have since. I should do a back-to-back taste test for comparison, then perhaps review Superior.
Just filled a smash box with Square. Oh my, I’d forgotten how good it is. Very tasty. Glad I’ve got two large tubs of this.
I have four scotches in my collection, all sweet; Honey Bee, Railroad Mills, Navy and Tube Rose. The first and last of those are distinct from the other two as they are obviously scented (the first with honey, the second with tuberosa), but I can tell the difference between the Navy and Railroad Mills - the second is more cigar-like than the first. I like them all, but I’d really like to try some plain scotch to see what that’s like. My friend who brings them back for me when she goes to the USA isn’t going in the foreseeable future, but her friend is coming to visit her instead. I may have to do a bit of begging.
@HR_pufnsnuff, pm me if you have trouble getting scotches. I might be able to help.
I get a different reaction from some with Square. Its not bad and I like it but I find Superior has more dimension to it. Square (for me) makes a nice, plain daily snuff. Less burn than Superior.
