Ok so after joining this forum I’ve ended up with a pretty large array of snuffs from across the globe. I’m sure I’m not alone but it got me wondering whether people stay with one for a day/week/tin at a time before moving on to the next or pinch a different snuff each time?

C

For me I guess its all what is going on and the mood. I have a box I carry daily, everywhere, one flavor. When I go to bed, I put the box in the fridge and I switch to what ever I feel the urge for. Usually I try to switch up every week or two my evening snuffs, but my daily one has been consistent for a couple months now… Seems like my taste changes pretty quick. My fridge is jam packed, some days I go through a variety of flavors and others I stick to a couple. Usually, I have about 4 or 5 small tins, or decanted from larger boxes by my side at the end of the night.

@coreymillia‌ thanks. Pretty much the same here. Carry White Elephant with me everywhere then mix it up with a second throughout each day.

K

For me it’s a lot like food as far as flavour goes. Some days I prefer one and some days another. That way unfortunately I have yet to finish a box/tin and a lot of them dry out. I still take them though. And yes, the wish to try as many different ones as possible is an issue for me. That’s why I haven’t posted any new reviews for a while simply because I forced myself not to buy any new snuffs until the old ones are finished.

I have a routine–Hedges in the evening/upon awakening in the night/awakening in the morning. Then whatever strikes my fancy as I load my bullets with NB Madras for the work day. At night, White Elephant and whatever else I think of. I admit I could seriously survive on Hedges, NB Madras and White Elephant if circumstances dictated. The rest is gravy.

E

Thanks for the comments all, very helpful - I know there’s no wrong answer but, like @Kiwi78‌ I was getting worried I’d never finish a tin the way I’m going and there’s so many more to try!

H

For me I have my staple - White Elephant - that I use 90% of the time and I dip into the others the other 10%. When I first started I would scarcely ever use the same snuff twice. I do love the variety and I appreciate other types, but I’ve settled on the WE as my standard just because of its potency and interesting scent.

J

I thought I had developed a routine, but really don’t have one. I jump around, but my staples are Havana Toast (favorite snuff to date), Lundy Foot, Dreamcatcher, Olde English Toast, Dragun Menthol, Hedges, White Elephant, Kailash, HDT, Ganga, and Toque Whiskey & Honey. I have found that I mainly like Artisan, Indian, WoS, Toque, and Hedges. I prefer snuffs on the fine and dry side with a decent nicotine kick, but a medium moisture medium grind can be nice too. There are a few coarse ground snuffs I really enjoy, but am yet to take them more than a few times a week. I’m still yet to finish a tin or tub of anything but am close to finishing a small tin of Dreamcatcher, and that’s taken me a month.

K

I basically have a routine set nowadays. I’ll start off with White Elephant before moving on to F&T HDT for the majority of the day. Inbetween sniffs of HDT I’ll sneak in a bit of OM Limoncello or an SP for clearing effect.

E

I think I’ll end up like @horus92‌ - White Elephant is my favourite so far and I get through more of that than anything. Love the buttery taste and strength. Currently alternating with Lundy Foot which does come a close second. I do like the idea of having a pinch of something refreshing and cleansing in between the heavier stuff. Good suggestion @Kentuckysnuff‌ !

I like to mix it up a bit, usually start the day with either FUBAR SNAFU Plain or Tom Buck, then take a couple with me for the day usually WoS CoC, McC’s Hops and WoS Gold Label, then when I get home, it can be anything in my collection! Thor’s Hammer gets plenty of use, as does WoS SM Blue and Viking Menthol if I feel like something mentholated. But, before bed, I almost always take my usual, WoS Prime Minister. Others get a go at various times. Spoilt for choice indeed.

J

The box I carry everywhere always contains WoS Jockey Club. On my desk at home there is usually a box containing schmaltzler (currently Echt Fresko), another containing some sort of toast (currently a mix of @chefdaniel creations) one containing some sort of SP (currently a mix of J&HW SP No.1 and Top Mill), and one containing something mentholated (currently swiss menthol snuff cut with some of @Roderick’s plain, oiled base tobacco so it doesn’t blow my head off). Apart from those constants, I dip into anything else as the mood takes me - somethimes a pinch or two from the tin, and sometimes decanted into another box.

H

My tin of SG Black Coffee is always with me and will be used on and off throughout the day, but I take my entire collection with me because, apart from that one, I never know what my nose is going to demand. That’s over 60 snuffs, most between 10g and 25g sizes, but some 5g tins in there too.

R

I only keep a couple of snuffs around, dont want anything to go dry on me, and I try to stick with one for as long as possible before opening another.

F

I have owned so many different snuffs (around 300) that I simply take whatever my mood calls for. There are some that I do more than others, of course, but I like variety and I like to keep things spontaneous. Having a routine or a rotation would bore me. But I totally understand if a person prefers to have a rotation.

M

With greatest respect to @fredh, he’s a really knowledgeable fellow and could probably almost qualify as a professional nose. I can totally understand how a sophisticated palate can require titillation. And big rotations seem to be common. I take SG Lavender Dark, Irish D Light, Old Paris and Santo Domingo pretty exclusively. I’ve only recently started to try some of the newer offerings from de Kralingse, and I’m glad I have. But I’m the rotation fellow. Few snuffs, but old friends.

S

Over the last year I went into full on TAD over snuff and amassed quite a few (which seems to be common amongst new snuffers) but, at heart I am a creature of habit and prefer to have a few old friends as opposed to a roomfull of acquaintances. I mostly stick with SG plain snuffs like london brown, KB, Viking dark/spear and rarely branch out at this point. I’ve found my comfort zone and I’m good with it.

There are so many great snuffs. And so many new snuffs I have yet tried. I have a few hundred decanted and several hundred unopen. I have only finished a few favorites. I have some of the chefs Old Mill Snuffs and it is hard to stray away. I am quite prepared for snuff armageddon. Everyone knows I am a fan of the whites and scotches for effect. I love what abraxas, sws and chef have cooked up as top shelf. As for daily snuffs I don’t leave home without 6 Photo Special, F&T HDT,and Togue Quit are always on hand. While I do travel with a half dozen snuff boxes; while at home I employ rotation, I used to hit a brand and go threw the range I have. But recently I look to the what’s in your nose thread for those favorites I had long forgot about. After all life is short and I will never finish my horde. When I wrote reviews I would use a snuff for a few days then back to rotation and visit them again for a few days to get the full disclosure of how I liked it. Unless it is a new snuff on the market this point is mute. The batch I may review may not be the batch you receive . Use snuff anyway you feel that suit your needs at the present time. My taste change with the seasons I find that this is common here at snuff house. I am jealous of those who can be content with just a handful of choices but I suffer from the disease of more, Due to my addictive persona . Snuff is one vice I will not falter away from. Snuff said.

E

I’m still in the exploratory phase (probably tried less than twenty different snuffs) but I am finding I love menthols in the morning and evening and anything with a decent nicotine kick in between. My nose prefers dry and fine, however, and getting clogged up in the middle of the day is no fun thus moderation is key. That said I’m a creature of habit when it comes to tobacco, be it snuff, pipes, or cigars. I own variety but lean heavily on favorites.

E

It’s great to hear about peoples different approaches. Since my original question I settled on carrying a smash box of White Elephant and a medium sized snuff box of F&T High Dry Toast with me everywhere, I’ve then a couple of small boxes which I rotate with a couple of new flavours to mix it up, currently on Toque Spanish Gem and Dholakia Super Strong Toast. Maybe one day the WE or HDT will get demoted in favour of a new favourite but this method really helps ensure my whole selection and new additions get a fair work out and I form an honest opinion over time. For me, skipping from one type to the next with every pinch sometimes meant sacrificing the true enjoyment of a snuff for the sake of variety so I try to stick to the same for at least a couple of hours. I find the scent hangs around longer and develops better that way.
