Guys, this is very preliminary, but… I am attempting to organize a group buy of Spanish Jewel (Dry only). As most of you are aware it is very difficult to acquire as our good friend macalpe (Pedro) is the only one here with access to the Master Craftsman and it must be purchased in 1Kg (2+ lb.) quantities at a very high price. However, macalpe has agreed to attempt to assist me in procuring a 1Kg package of it (at the Master’s mercy). If we are successful in our little venture I will be offering members here the opportunity to participate in a group buy (a one time opportunity) allowing for the purchase of Spanish jewel in varying quantities. As we have not yet firmed up pricing and other acquisition costs the group buy price per gram has not been calculated. Please stay tuned for details. Excellent idea Merdock. I think through this way a lot of American fellows will may try a dry, plain, natural and craftsmanship snuff. The Master Craftsman is now retired and he no longer made this special snuff. Our fellow Chris@USA wrote a review time before very illustrated called Spanish magic, you may look for here. In my opinion, the Spanish Jewel is worth $10 a gram!!! It is the strongest snuff available & in return you can take smaller pinches. Quick question for Merdock or Pedro (macalpe), Will we be recieving the Dry, or Moist version? They are both wonderful, as due to troutstrokers kindness I recieved some samples of both versions today in the mail. After having sampled both, I must say that the dry version is very similar to some of the american snuffs I’ve had, just way smoother. While the moist in my opinion is where the Spanish Jewel really shines, not only having that great tobacco flavor with it’s smoothness but, with the added moisture it becomes the first snuff of this style that I can take so easilly. My fingers are crossed for the moist version, but if it’s the dry, I’m pretty confident nobody will be disapointed… Thanks again to Troutstroker for giving me a generous taste and to Macalpe, Merdock, and Mr. Vinyets Salabert, Lluis ,from Vic (Barcelona-Spain) for making this all possible… EDIT--------Sorry for this post, as reading is key to not asking stupid questions. I haven’t even tried this stuff yet but I’m very curious about it. If there is an oz. left by the time everyone else gets theirs, I would love to purchase one. I have PayPal, but my account is suspended for some stupid reason. I’d have to send cash or a money order.

Satyr, if you believe your paypal account is suspended because you recieved an e-mail informing you of this do not believe that. It is a common fake e-mail that is not from paypal although it looks as if it is. Just delete that crap. And go directly to the pay-pal site and verify that your account is still up and running. Do not believe these e-mails saying your pay-pal account has been suspended. These e-mails look like they are coming from Pay-Pal but they are not. They usually say your account has been suspended you need to click a link to verify your information. Don’t click that link they are only trying to steal personal info from you.

Tis no scam, old chaps. I even went directly to the PayPal website to get a direct number so I could talk to an actual person about my account. The person I spoke to confirmed that my account has been suspended due to some terms of service violation. They informed me that 2 years prior I had used my account to pay for ‘adult content’ which is a direct violation of the user agreement. From what I gather, there is a whole plethora of things they could consider to be ‘adult content’. Oddly enough, nobody can provide me any specific information on this alleged content. I have been told that, because of this violation, my account suspension cannot be lifted. I can’t do ANYTHING with my account. I can’t even delete it! I’ve tried to pay with it several times. No dice. So, unless there’s an extra ounce or so of this SJ to sell, and cash or money order is acceptable, I’m SOL

Based on the response there should be plenty to go around and once I get it i’ll accept payment. Money Order’s will be fine…

@mars & roderick That is really good to know. So far the only terminology that has been used between Pedro and I is “spanish jewel” and “stokers”, but we’ll make sure to refrain from including any more overtly tobacco related terminology.

Especially expensive for your neighbors in the last frontier! I’ve seen items that would have shipped for 23 dollars shipped for over a hundred when shipped via anything other than usps. Patience is a virtue, and the spare 90 some odd dollars is worth the wait, in my humble opinion.

Ok, it appears the Spanish Jewel has been delayed because I gave macalpe the wrong zip code. I have contacted the post office and they caught my mistake today and are rerouting the package to the correct post office for delivery. Hooray!

@onefortheroad: My island is a little weird. We essentially get precipitation non-stop because we’re on the pacific, but it’s never all that cold (single digits sometimes), so it goes from heavy rains to heavy snows and the snow doesn’t typically accumulate for any length of time. So, we see a ton of snow, but within a week it’s gone again. It just wreaks havoc with the mail and any other plans you may try to make.

Spanish Jewel hit my mailbox today. And few minutes later it hit my nose. The aroma of it was smellable even from envelope and when I came with it to my room, my sister asked what had that terribly stinked, so I corrected her it was no stink but a nice chocolate/smokey aroma of my new tobacco which arrived from Spain. She’d better left. I opened the bag and took a pinch… what an amazing feeling in my nose! And it has turned me into very happy mood. I think it wasn’t the last pinch I took today. I had been just put through some hard times when I got my Spanish Jewel… it made me happy as anything else. I was really sad and depressed. But Spanish Jewel made my mind clear as tabula rasa and the world was easier place to live again. Yeah and it has a kick like a mule. I’m quite high sometimes in the school because of snuff… two pinches before lessons of some tougher stuff and it gets interesting.

I got mine today! Thank you very much Merdock It was absolutely worth the wait. I quickly took a tiny pinch to each nostril and it made my upper lip start to numb a little! As for the aroma, this snuff distinctly reminds me of one thing and one thing only: Salvia Divinorum. I would almost swear there is some mixed in with the tobacco. If this is the case, it doesn’t bother me one bit. It would actually be a nice touch. Well, aside from it being illegal in most places now. That’s it. Tobacco and Salvia Divinorum (or some other sage-type plant). I’m not detecting the chocolate that a few here have described. Anyway, I’m really enjoying it. I’ll be vaccum sealing half of it just for posterity.

Satyr, try it in the morning on an empty stomach while still in bed, you’ll feel about as good as a freshly de-wormed horse. One of my old high school indian friends and surrounding families grow a lot of salvia divinorum on the reservation. He chews quid’s as well as smoking it.

Salvia is defninatly a very interesting plant. I think the best way to discribe the effect of it would be out of body extradimensinal space. I know that sounds strange but so is salvia. Though the extra kick everyone is discribing on the spanish jewel sounds to me very familar. When I was younger I used to buy cigars made by the amish and they seemed to have similar type of strength and power to them. Maybe it’s a similar tobacco?

That sure is a trip back in time when I go visit my dad in Missouri and see all the Amish there. Seeing horse drawn carriages going down the side of the highway and they are all dressed the same. Working the fields without tractors.

My father drives a semi. Last year he called me while taking some back roads through Michigan. There are some amish groups who haven’t stuck entirely to their roots and have adapted some modern technology into their lives. I think as long as its not something needed to get by and live an easier life where you might be corrupted, its considered acceptable. Yes you can put a horse in reverse it’s the carriage that’s dificult. Though this amish thing reminds me there used to be an arcade in the town I live in. When the farmers market came into town all the amish men would stop in there to play the racing games.

Whoo hoo! Got my Spanish Jewel. Is there any other snuff that compares scent wise? The lingering scent is great. The only problem I have is that in order to get a long lasting scent I have to snuff enough to make my head spin (which isn’t much.) But, in small doses this stuff is great. And the scent does last awhile. FYI, wash your hands before you take a pee.

WOW! A superbly crafted snuff. Beautiful tan color. Nice fine grind. Scents reminiscent of Cuban tobacco. And I’m higher than a kite. Sitting is definitely recommended. The efforts to make this Magic available to this community are greatly appreciated.

Well I’ve combined them before, didn’t experience any antigravity but it did give me immortality and I soon became clairvoyant. The only bad side effect is that I now have an uncontrollable urge to hunt for the Chupacabra.

As my good friend and forum’s fellow Troutstroker said is a very hard job to buy snuff from Mr. Vinyets Salabert : 1.- He don’t sell less than 1 kg. 2.- Yo need to pay before (€.-150). I use to do a Bank Transference 3.- He don’t use the Spanish Postal Services ( in Spain is not allowed to sell tobacco privately; we have a Tobacco Monopoly of the State/Government). Then I have to pay the cost of a private curier Company ( 22 € more or less) 4.- He is completely retired from 4 years ago. Then he only have a stock of S.J. of about 15 kgs at the date of today. 5.- The phone callings with him are a TORTURE!!!..he comes from North East Spain and the country people speaks with a dialect really impossible to understand. CONCLUSIONS : The snuff from our Master Craftsman is one of the best snuffs never maked in Western World. Also he does all the process to have his snuff, including sow seeds and plants growing and re-collection. I think is a true shame and important lost to have no more Spanish Jewel Snuff. And is very important to know Mr. Vinyets is an 87 y.o. man! Maybe would be a positive idea if we create a group buy and from different sites buy to him the rest of his stock. I may create a bank account special for this work, and the interested fellows may do their straight transferences to this account; when I recive the bank notification I will send a receipt to the money sender as guarantee his money is in my bank account. The thing is this is the only way I may use, because I have not enough money to advance the purchases. Another important thing is the minimum purchase have to be of 500 grs. I believe Roderick already has some. And I believe Jaap Bes aka snuffmiller of dutch windmills/de kralingse received some as well to try and reproduce. To reproduce exactly you would need the same seed and growing conditions.

I would love to buy a smaller amount of this legendary snuff. I am just so broke (recovering student), so I couldn’t possibly take a half kilo. . . . if anyone would be willing to sell me 100 - 200 grams I would be much obliged. 100 would be my preference, but I could go as high as 200g. I understand if this is too little for anyone to accomodate. Thanks for the consideration anyhow.

Hi everyone, I just found this site recently, and have been reading this thread. I would love to get some of the Spanish Jewel if there is any extra - up to a half kg.

BigD - same here. I wrote to Macalpe and gave him my physical address. Nothing happened, and I never received as much as a reply.

If anyone is interested in selling even a little bit of this I would certainly be interested and appreciative in buying some. I know it’s a longshot, but all this talk has made me very curious about this. How can one single snuff attract this much attention?

(and you already know why that is) I’d guess that even if someone like Roderick were able to replicate it to 99 & 44/100ths % of the original… it may never have the same mythical allure. (I hope he does it anyway) :)) …and a Sauterne (but I won’t hold my breath on the latter).

Pedro is doing fine. He has just been hammered with one computer problem after the other.

Roderick has got mad skills though, and he’s very industrious and enterprising. These are good times for snuffers. Of Course I am NOT withdrawing my bid here.

Well this is certainly an interesting thread. I like everyone else would love to try this Spanish Jewel too. If it ever becomes available I’m sure it will be posted here for all of us to obtain some. Its a great story and I imagine that if this elderly snuffmaster found the right person that he might be willing to share his secrets. However, I’m sure he would only consider sharing the info with someone that is a sincere and dedicated snuff craftsman that only produces the highest quality snuff. Does anyone know why he hasn’t passed on his receipe yet? Maybe if someone offered decent $ for the receipe and agreed to name it Vinyets Salabert’s Spanish Jewel or simply ask this fellow what he wants for this info he might consider sharing. I just can’t imagine an elderly fellow not wanting to share. A face to face discussion with this man might go a long way in getting the receipe. Am I wrong? Did I miss something in these many pages as to why the receipe is not shared? Just a thought. PP

I imagine it isn’t so simple as following a recipe. It’s kinda like Granny’s cornbread. She doesn’t use a recipe. But more seriously, things like growing conditions would be hard to replicate. I’m all for people trying to replicate it though. In fact, I’m willing to compensate anyone who can make an accurate representation to the tune of ten U.S. dollars.

Premium Parrots, Pedro, the one who acquires this snuff from Mr Salabert has tried getting the information on how to reproduce this snuff. But they live so far apart, they only talk by phone and Mr Salabert is in his 80’s and speaks a different dialect & its hard for Pedro to understand it all. The most info that can be made out is on my review here: Spanish Jewel Review But even if all the secrets where let out, you would never be able to make something that has the exact taste. Unless you could recreate the climate & grow the tobacco in the same soil etc. You could get close but would be extremely hard if not impossible to get it exact.

Thank you for that info. I wasn’t aware that he grew his own tobacco, in spain. The soil alone could make all the differance. But to actually get the exact receipe would certainly be a start. I think if I were a snuff manufacturer it would be advantagous to call this fellow and see if he would mind meeting for this purpose. If so, then the price of traveling and such might be well worth it just to meet him and beg [lol] for his information. JMO PP
