Does anyone know of a reliable place to buy snuff spoons? I’d just as soon not deal with Ebay as they mostly want to use PayPal acccounts. I’ve asked Mike at Mars but he says he knows of no suppliers. Right now I’m using the spoon part of a 3-way pipe tool but it is too big for my needs. Thanks in advance for all replies.

A

Look at Snuffstore, link on the left hand column of the screen

B

I’ve said if before salt spoon or cayanne spoon. cayanne spoon is smaller.

C

Pen caps work good. Not as classy as a spoon, but quite functional.

A

The only way to take snuff is by pinching, until you’ve got that I’m afraid you stay an apprentice…

T

There’s always the Bavarian ‘back of the hand’ technique as well, snuffster, but I agree, the pinch is really the way to go.

A

Back of the hand, snuffspoon - its all the same; learn to pinch and use and enjoy snuff like our snuffing ancestors!

B

nah it depends on the snuff for me. Coarse snuffs don’t pinch as well. For instance santo domingo certainly needs a spoon to be fully enjoyed. Of course as strange as this sounds I like pinching from my spoon.

X

I usually use my small spoon for Santo Domingo, Princes, and some of the other F&Ts sometimes just becsaue the jar is too deep, but mainly if they are course. Schmalzlers I use my larger spoon. Fluffy German ones I sniff off of my hand or thumbnail, or pinch. Everything else, I pinch. Taxi and Ntsu I pinch them but don’t sniff them, I just shove them in in huge quantities ;-D So, spoons have their place, if for nothing else than scooping snuff into a snuffbox. I agree with bob, it depends on the snuff. Anyway, ebay is the best source even if you might try to workaround paypal. Otherwise you might spend the rest of your days scouring antiques markets and never find the right spoon.

ON a similar note. Does anyone have one of the silver snuff boxes from snuff store, or know of a better source to get one from. I would really like to see one in the flesh before buying it, but it’s not like I can find one in a store around here. They are around 57BPS, so I would hate to shell out that kind of dough if they are shoddy. Are they leak proof, would they be suitable for scotches? etc. If anyone has info I would appreciate it.

A

Ive not seem one but there have been mixed reviews about the qaulity and leakage of snuff, although some people say they are very good to be fair. I got a superb box form Walsh brothers for about £50 - a really excellent snuff box. If you are interested go to WWW. Walsh Bros.com and look under their pillbox section under the reproduction silver heading. Another member who no longer posts - Rommer - also got one and was very happy with it. Its suitable for all snufffs and is my favourite box in my collection.

M

I just need a Snuff spoon to get to the bottom of tall tins that are 3/4 empty. My fat little fingers are useless when it comes to digging out those last few pinches.

A

You could improvise one of those spoons used for long ice-cream.

M

@bigblue1, snuffster Many thanks! About all I have around the house that is the right size is the back end of my dinner forks. Not really classy. Need to start checking the cutlery displays at Big Lots.

N

I use the flat part of a pipe nail if I want a spoon. You can get a really big toot on it.

E

Plastic collar stay can’t be beat and fits in the wallet

W

Cheftools.com (search it for: “salt spoon” " mustard spoon" “measuring sppon” etc)

L

I almost always use my Chinese tiger bone snuff spoon that came with my Patrick Collins Triple-Tech box. Very handy to place a pinch on the back of the hand, my preferred method.

D

The three way boxes from Patirck come with a little spoon. I use it on occasion and am trying to get in the habit of using it more often as I keep getting snuff all over myself pinching, plus the dirty fingernails.

W

that’s all well and good – if you’re one of the handful of fewpeople who were able to get one of those boxes before they apparently went into eternal ‘out of stock’ mode. if you know where one of those boxes can actually be purchased and were to post that instead, that’d be great.

D

I had no idea they were eternally out of stock. That is too bad, seems like they would sell really well. Nope sorry no idea where to get them if Nicotine Rush is not stocking them anymore. I did notice that Mr Snuff has a bunch of wooden boxes on his site now, I purchased a small one today, I did not take time to see if any of the others were the three ways as I was looking for a very small box.

S

Buy a package of Bernard’s Cardinal or Virginie and they come with great plastic spoons that work great for me.

S

go to your local Dollar Store and buy a manicure set for $1. It comes with a Cuticle tool that works pefectly

I have a set of the measuring spoons. While they look nice in picture, they are too big and clunky for a respectable snuff spoon. I use a depression era silver salt spoon. Picked it up at an antique shop for $15. The only one that looks useable is second from the bottom.

B

nah a dash a pinch or smidgen would make for a good snuff spoon. Since they are actual measurements and a pinch is about a snuff pinch. I could be wrong about the spoons but they all seem like they’d work great for snuff.

O

I do have a set of the measuring spoons, pinch, dash, smidgen. Tried the smallest one, the pinch, last night. About the right size for me but the shape of the thing doesn’t lend itself to emptying freely enough when used for snuffing. I kinda like the simple looks and the $0.99 price of the last one pictured. There is another thread here I was looking at recently, this one perhaps, older post had a link to a store that had numerous sterling silver salt spoons. Post had picture of a fish shaped spoon. ETA: Found it. 3rd page of the thread, “taking snuff”

C

_Tried the smallest one, the pinch, last night. About the right size for me but the shape of the thing doesn’t lend itself to emptying freely enough when used for snuffing._That’s what I meant. I have thought about taking them to work and grinding down the handles to make them a bit less “tool” like. The bowl size was perfect, but the overall configuration of the device was the issue.

M

I have a similar set, the smallest size, “smidgen” is still too much snuff for me! I would like to try the “drop” size though… This set is from Amazon.com

W

Like I said in over in the "taking snuff’ thread (and sorry for double posting but it was just as easy as linking to that thread plus made it more likely people would actually see the information/images etc if I simply reposted them here) I’ve ordered 6 of each of the above (because I have no idea until I get them what’s going to work and it turns out that 6 of each made a nice total purchase of $101.xx, just over the required $99 for free shipping. money that I’d rather spend on items) I have a small-to-average sized female nose (my ears nose and feet on me are a bit disproportionately bigger than I’d like or think they should be), but small fingers. Once delivered and I’ve had a chance to test all we’ll see how it goes and I’ll report.

W

@miamimarkI have a similar set, the smallest size, “smidgen” is still too much snuff for me! I would like to try the “drop” size though…” Do you have a link or specific name for that one? I realize you said "Amazon’ for where but I’ve been all over searching including amazon (and Amazon is where the search started that actually led me to where I found these I’ve shown) and I never saw the one you’ve shown. Specific link, model number or name, anything? Thanks.

M

I don’t have a link for my set, I bought them at Bed, Bath and Beyond. I searched “mini measuring spoons” and found the spoons with the smaller “drop” size. http://www.amazon.com/s/?ie=UTF8&keywords=mini+measuring+spoons&tag=googhydr-20&index=aps&hvadid=2961751439&ref=pd\\_sl\\_7q314klotx\\_b minimark : )

W

its okay , I found by going to amazon and searching “measuring spoon drop’ (but had a knock at the door just as I was in mid-edit above to say that and never got it said) here is the link you said, but in clickable form (got to 'format comments as” below the typing area here, click the Html radial button then flind the link icon above this area to make one)Amazon: mini measuring spoonsI’m going to look at buying these too.

M

I know how to make a link, I just didn’t feel like doing it!

X

Those all look unwieldy to me. My best snuff spoon is 1.5" long and my schmalzler spoon is just under 2.5". Of course, as mentioned, what is really important is bowl size. If its not a decrorative piece, a bit of tooling can cut it down.

X

Big spoons are handy for doling out from bulk into a snuffbox though!

A

Freud’d be interested in this: men talking about who has the SMALLEST spoon?

X

Sometimes a spoon is just a spoon.

A

Sometimes a spoon is your mother.

W

@Xander, and others saying they are gonna be too big etc I seriously hope you guys are wrong – because if you’re not then I’m gonna end up with waaay too many not-so-useful ‘snuff porting tools’ on hand. If thats the case at least I’ll be able to get away from plastic with these – but talk about overkill – tooo many!. alternatively I hope you just meant the handles on some of them are too long too big etc I look at my plastic 1/8th measuring spoon, the one I currently use to measure parts for home mixes and moving from one container to another, and I have always thought something that was just about half that size would be the perfect size for sniffing from *Now doing the silent “please please oh please let at least the very the scoop parts themselves be small enough to use please please please” mantra-prayer on it while waiting for them all to arrive. I still haven’t actually purchased any of them with the smallest, the ‘drop’ size just yet (but I still plan on it)

K

WHY DOES EVERYONE DISLIKE PAYPAL? I hear it all the time. I mean I dont use it ever but whats so bad about it? lots of people use it

B

I use a czech pipe tool. They are in about every pipe shop I’ve been in.

O

I find the pipe tools to be too big for sniffing and too flat for transferring. The little measuring spoons work great for filling snuffboxes but the smallest I’ve had (smidgeon) seems like a good quantity for sniffing but due to the shape doesn’t work as well as the flatter snuff spoons like in the tripletech snuffboxes. @whistlrr and driego- I should have more tripletechs ready in a few weeks. My apologies for the length of time they’ve been “sold out” over at nicotinerush. They take a lot of time and I seem to have so little of that lately.

T

I’ve never had a problem with Papal and have used it alot in many years.

D

i find a Bic pen cap works well as a makeshift spoon.

O

Been fun reading thru, got me curious to revisit using a spoon. Don’t have a salt spoon, do have the pinch size measuring spoon but it’s not quite right for me. I have used the pen caps before but they aren’t quite right either, they do serve in a “pinch” tho. (sorry)Work has been completely automated today so I picked up a scrap of wood of the dock and whittled one. Good source. Free Shipping. I’m bored. Does it show? Nice little spoon tho! (-;

D

@OTD I know what you mean that pen caps come in handy in a pinch, the long pocket stick thing works alright for me but, I made my own little spoon out of a metal fingernail file (don’t worry it was new lol) with the tip of it bent up to scoop up the snuff easer.

O

Modified fingernail files, custom carved from shipping pallets, they do all work and are inexpensive! (-; I still intend to pick up some dedicated spoons at some point, have seen many nice ones in these related threads.

M

My snuff spoons: One small teaspoon from my drawer, made from silver, don’t know where I got it, used for transfers. One length of copper wire, bent into a spoon…it is a crappy imitation of one of Troutstroker’s Ideas. One “manicure stick” carved into a small scoop.
