Some Problems with Toque Snuffs...

So I started my journey of Toque snuffs with Toque Quit which 6 months ago I didn’t particularly like because of my inexperience, but now I love it. I then bought some Absinthe and Coke which both smelled amazing and I enjoyed very much. Now since then I have just aquired Grapefruit and St. Clements and after letting them air out over night I still can’t get any of their tastes. I’ve been using a lot of Toque Original and WoS Tom Buck so I have the lemony/citrus subtleties down but I can’t find anything in either of these two snuffs. Any suggestions or comments?

First, I found the Toque Grapefruit a little disappointing, but to lay off other snuffs for a while. Then take it and you should find that the grapefruit flavour comes out.

As for your St Clements. You should hear the bells ringing! For me this is orange & lemons, and at it’s best. Both my tins of Grapefruit and St’ Clems are 25g, and just under ½ full, or ½ empty. Thats depending on the way we look at things. They must be over a year old now, but well kept.

I have noticed that the citrus/fruit ones dont seem so strong to my nose. Floral (my tin of Toque Rose comes through loud and clear nose wise) seems to work better. For example, I can barely get any scent from my toque blueberry. My brother on the other hand can smell it quite strongly. So definately very nose dependant. I love my toque tins (i did a big 6x25g order a month or two ago.) In fact my only complaint was that my mate who placed an order a few weeks previous got a free bullet and I didnt

I have no trouble detecting the scents in Grapefruit, St. Clements, (and Blueberry - since it was mentioned). I have heard of others not getting them though. I don’t know if its storage condtions, freshness vs. staleness, or just all our different noses that causes this.

Some tins, I´ve received in the past, weren´t really tightly closed. No big deal if you receive them directly from Roderick, but else you can just speculate, how long they “aired out”. The very first Toque Grapefruit really disappointed me, but I just ordered it directly the next time, and this tin was really how it was meant to be.

“As most of you guys know we only use 100% natural flavouring in our snuffs.”–Roderick How in the hell do they get cheese and bacon natural flavoring? just sayin’

The Grapefruit is the only Toque snuff I store in the fridge, as I´d hate to have that marvelous flavour gone. If you ever received one of these in a disappointing state (the snuffreviews entries suggest there were a few people), you really should consider giving it another try and order directly from Roderick. It´s fantastic, if it´s in the state it was supposed to be.

The Cheese and Bacon is HORRIFYINGLY accurate and pungent. After 15 minutes I had to take some redbull to evict it. Even then I got a few minutes of cheese and bacon menthol!

A haggis menthol would be nice.

@bish777 - Even “worse” you really should store it separately. I´ve locked that beast inside a zip-bagged, containered container, miles from my collection. The flavour “leaks” and might convert any other snuff into one of his kind.

Maybe the tins I got of St Clements and Grapefruit are in fact old and dried out. I only ordered the two of them about 2 weeks ago and they sit in the dark away from any heat. I guess next time I make an order, I’ll get them straight from Toque. Thanks Roderick for the input by the way, it’s always nice to hear from the pro.

3 Cheers for Cheese and Bacon Menthol… anyone?.. Am I alone here? …Anyone?.. Hello?.. LOL

It’s obvious that Roderick uses his very own bacon drippings and deli cheese slices to make the Bacon and Cheese snuff. The man is dedicated.

Roderick, great shout-out to The Prisoner!

@Roderick: You let the cat out of the bag on the Cheese and Bacon a while back by telling us that it was flavoured with Danish Blue and Smoked Ayrshire Bacon. Have to admit that I think it’s a bit of a sacrilege to be using the finest bacon in the world to flavour snuff with, especially as the Danish Blue scent is so overpowering that I have trouble detecting any bacon scent. On the other hand, the very idea of smoking Ayrshire bacon is pretty much alien to people from Ayrshire. Why cover up the delicious, subtle Ayrshire cure by smoking the meat ? Smoked Ayrshire is more or less an “export only” product, so I guess you can do what you like with it. Just keep your mitts off the unsmoked stuff :o)

Bringing this thread back on topic, ha I have decided to try and rehydrate the Toque Grapefruit and St. Clemants with the old paper towel in a box trick. After only a few hours the grapefruit already seems to be getting its flavor back. Maybe the tins I got from Tom were older. Makes me wonder what would happen to my tins of Toque original and Spanish gem if gave them a little hydration too…
