Some Notes After (more than) a Week of Snuffing

R

This is my ninth day in taking snuff. Thus far everything has been wonderful. The initial adjustment to taking snuff and all that goes with it has been an enjoyable learning curve.  My nose is no longer sore and I am having quite alot of fun with the eleven snuffs i have tried thus far.

Currently my top five snuffs are:

  • McChrystal’s Anisette    Pure, uncomplicated enjoyment. Never gives me anything to complain about and always give me plenty to enjoyment. I plan to purchase several tins of this blend soon.
  • McChrystal’s Clove        Soothing sweet, delicious blend with a wonderful burn as the first snuff on a fresh nose.  Thereafter it helps calm the nose down after taking other blends.  I’ll most likely keep a good supply of Clove on hand as well.
  • Toque Menthol                Wonderful wake-up-the-nose blend.  Gets the juices flowing and preps the nose for a round of snuffing. I’ll be buying a 10 g tin of this to keep a bullet filled of this at all times.
  • McChrystal’s English Menthol         A more gentle menthol that I definitely enjoy for regular snuffing and as an alternative wake up blend. A round of this is a pleasure.
  • McChrystal’s Hops        Delicious, spicy Snuff I’m told is after the style of an SP.  While it doesn’t quite compete with Clove or Anisette for my attention, it is a pleasure to partake of this blend.

None of the eleven snuffs I have tried have been bad. For me toasts are something I need a bit more practice on. Of the toasts, the bullets I’ve from Toque haven’t been quite enough to really say if I favour them or not. Menthols have definitely earned a place in my rotation in the long term. McChrystal’s Original and Genuine  is a lovely menthol with alot of zest that I’m saving as a backup to English Menthol. I’m Also planning to purchase a 10 g tin Of Toque Ginger, partly to give me a better chance to evaluate it  better and partly because so far it has been a genuine pleasure…  Definitely snuffs with a spice flavour are becoming front and center choices for me thus far.

As for technique, while I have become competent with the boxcar method, off the back of the hand is second nature to me. The Rococo tap boxes have worked out great for me, I plan to buy a few more to keep my favorites in. I made a small snuff scoop out of a scrap of tin to take pinches out of tins and to take snuff off of. This has become my second favorite method of taking snuff. Part of the appeal of this method is how clean it is.

Bullets to me are great for sampling or for taking strong snuff but are a hindrance when taking snuffs I enjoy most as it takes too long to dispense proper amount.

I’d be glad to share my experience with anyone who is brand new to snuffing or just wants to know what the initial learning curve is like before they dive in.  I really love my new pastime and the enjoyment it gives me. My only regret is that I did not try snuff sooner :-D

It only gets better!

I’ve only been at it for 6-8 months.

I reached out to @chefdaniel through e-mail with questions on my first ever order through OM, and it’s been downhill ever since.

:slight_smile:

@DireWolf  Downhill?  Is it something I said, or is the snuff not up to…snuff?

A new snuff you may be interested in is “Kingfish”.  It is seafood free, and no fish were harmed in its tobacco bill.  More of a summer fruit and floral, unsweetened save for a bit of honey.  A toasted blend of flue cured, dark air cured Highland Rim burley and some Turkish Prilep.

Chef, I’d not tried your crafts but your reputation is perfect, reading that my takeaway was since he tried old mill, all other snuffs were down hill from there. At least that was my impression.

@snuffsahoy  I know, I was indulging my inner smart-ass

Ah, I fail hehe

@chefdaniel

Yeah!  I’ve spent a few hundred bucks on snuff orders, fancy assed hand forged snuff spoons, Ti spoons, several snuff box varieties, flip top glass decanting jars, and hankeys/Kleenex.  :))

I have probably 50+ tins of snuff, and go through the cabinet in the morning like some kinda dandy selecting a half dozen to carry for the day.

I can’t wait to get my black booger pickers on some Pistachio.
