Soap story

I was having dinner over the in-laws yesterday when my sister-in-law turned up. She’s back from Uni for a few days visiting and decided to have dinner with us. Afer the meal I took out my snuffbox (containing F&T Morlaix) and took a pinch. I then offered some to my father-in-law who took a pinch too. As we both chatted about how lovely this snuff was etc my sister-in-law (whos 18) piped up; “Whats that? Snuff?” I said “Yeah, do you want to try some?” she sort of looked at it for a moment then picked up the box causiously as if she expected it to bite her then after a few moments she carefully took a pinch uttering the immortal words “What do I do next?”. I told her to drizzle it along the back of her hand then sniff it up. We all watched expectantly as she did this. I was impressed as she didn’t sneeze at all. Then she looked at us with a grimace on her face and I said “What did you think?” and she said “Its just like sniffing a bar of soap!”

I’ve had similar familial and workplace experiences. The best ones to give it to are smokers: I went to France last week and as usual got searched for drugs and had all my baggage swabbed and field tested - this happens whenever I travel without exception because of the way I look, I now go along with it without comment for the amusesment of when they find my police ID wallet with the badge and ID card. There is no reason why cops shouldn’t be searched like anyone else, its just funny when the officious ones find it. However, the officer that found my can of Toque ended up having a tentative sniff and once I’d told her it’s use, asking me how to get it as she was trying to stop smoking. Make friends with snuff!

I liked both stories!

I got my mom to try some gletscher prise last weekend. In fact, she asked me if she could try it. She took a little pinch and looked like a pro too. I was impressed but not surprised, shes a cool lady.

Is she going to join the forum Matt? ;o)

GOod stories! I’ve tried with a few smoker friends, but they won’t have anything to do with it, won’t even try it. I must confess I am discreet with it in mixed company.

Well I am not (or was ever) a smoker and I appreciate snuff very much! I think the point my sis-in-law was trying to make is that the Fribourg & Treyer range do tend to have a very strong perfumey, scented whiff about them which does remind some people (including myself) of soap

Its quite unusual for an adult non-tobacco user to start using. Most of us started as teenagers and the type we end up using is often, but not always, related to a cigarette habit. What made you start Lazarus?

Unfortunately it’s not a very interesting story of how I started. I had heard mention of snuff a few times since I was a teenager either on TV or in books. On a recent visit to Paris I read about Napoleon and his famous snuff habit & I admit I found the very idea of sniffing powdered tobacco up the nose svery strange indeed! So (being inquisitive by nature) I thought to myself ‘I might try that’ just to see what it felt like really. I found a website which sold snuff so I bought some ‘Ozona President’ and haven’t looked back! I despise smoking but love snuff as it gives you the oppurtunity to enjoy tobacco in a (more or less) risk-free way without seriously damaging your health or the health of others. I am also a bit of a sentimental history fan and like the idea of continuing a fine tradition which the likes of Napoleon & Charles Darwin enjoyed.

Interesting, thanks. There is a great website on Darwin (just Google his name) that has a lot of his writing on it plus biographical content from his son. His snuffing is mentioned many times and for him it was a massive addiction that he tried in vain to stop - it seems that he actually ended up by keeping his snuff in a neighbours house to make it inconvenient to take. Napolean is also interesting and he, as you know, is reputed to have taken pounds of snuff a month. I have always wondered how!? There was also at least one assination attempt by putting poison into his snuff box. I think your story is cool, its nice, somehow, that people are still prepared to have some pleasure in this sanitised, politically correct world. I despise smoking too, but sometimes have the odd cigarette for a major nicotine hit - I am an addict in the same way that heavy coffee drinkers need a steady intake. For me, a cigarette is a bit like an espresso.

Hi Snuffster, thanks for the info about Charles Darwin, I had never heard about him keeping his snuff in a neighbours house! I personally find Napoleons snuff taking habit fasinating! I think it is generally accepted that Napoleon managed to get through so much snuff as not only was he quite a heavy user himself but the snuff-taking etiquette of the day demanded that he offer a pinch to whomever he was with when he took a pinch himself. I feel it makes sense therefore that part of the reason he got through so much of the stuff was that he gave alot of it away. Imagine if he was at a banquet & took a pinch. Technically he would have to offer it to all at the table…thats alot of snuff! Not to mention the inevitable spillages that occured! I bet people scrambled to get a pinch whenever he opened his snuffbox…partly because I suppose it might have been considered rude to refuse such an offer and secondly if the Emperor of France offered you a pinch of snuff you’d probably take it just so you could say you had!!
