As a newbie here, I may have missed this if it was an earlier topic. I have gathered from some of your posts where some of you call home (at least your country…sometimes your slang gives it away). But where specifically do you live? As for me, I have always lived in Wilmington, Delaware, USA. Wilmington may be known to some of you as the home of the DuPont company and also as a banking center. What some of you know, and others do not, is that once we were famous for snuff! Just five miles up one of the creeks that waters our city (Red Clay Creek) is the village of Yorklyn, where the original Garrett Snuff Mill was built way back in the early 1700’s. I do not know the history very well (I think Troutstoker does) but at some point it belonged to Helme. This I do not understand as Garrett is now made by Conwood but Swisher retains the Helme name. Anyway, as a snuff beginner I have not graduated to the level where I can try Garrett’s yet anyway, but I’m working on it! The name lives on in Snuff Mill Road, which runs from Centerville to Yorklyn about a quarter mile south of the Pennsylvania border, which it roughly parallels. Its my favorite bicycle road for its long hill. So again, where are the rest of you guys? I travel quite a bit, so its not impossible that I may have passed through or near your home. I’m also a geography buff, so finding your spot in the atlas is fun for me.
Xander, a world map with names and places is available but I cannot remember where to find it. I’m pretty sure one of the more clued-up members will soon give you the details. I live near Cape Town South Africa and it seems as if I’m the only snuffer in Africa!! Cheers
Here’s the map http://www.frappr.com/snuffusers
I live in a suburb of East London, on the edge of the county of Essex.
I’m in South East London, UK :o)
And I’m in Hull in the East Riding of Yorkshire UK.
You can also link to the map from snuffreviews.com here. I am from Pioneer, CA
Well, thanks for the link to the map, guys. I can’t get it to scroll, though, and on my connection, It’s actually quicker to pull out my atlas!
You should just be able to click on a section of map & while holding down on the mouse, you can drag the map around.
lxskllr, you are the closest thing I have to a neighbor so far (and according to the map). Any good snuff in your parts?
Yep, Food Lion has an amazing selection of american snuffs. I live in Oxford, PA. BTW. ~Snuffy
Ok then Snuffy, you are now my closest neighbor! I had I high school teahcer from Oxford. We should get together sometime. Food Lion, eh? I’ll give them a go. I think they are only downstate DE and in Maryland, though. Nearest one may be Elkton, MD. I have yet to finish scouring the local tobacco shops. I’ve only been to the closest, which carries Swisher Tops Sweet, and Tops Mild Scotch. I tried the Sweet so far, but I have a lot of snuff here from recent mail orders. I have a hard time explaining to my wife a good justification for looking for more. I have 2 mail orders I’m waiting to place and a half dozen shops I want to visit. Why can’t I get enough snuff? Did you guys all go through this when you started?
Definitely nice to have someone close by that uses snuff. If there were only a few more in the area, we could all get together and have some sort of snuff partaking party. Heh. You mentioned the Food Lion in Elkton. Would you be coming from 896 through Newark to 40? If so and that Food Lion doesn’t carry snuff, take 40 a bit farther into North East, MD. The Food Lion there has a great selection. ~Snuffy
Thanks Snuffy. My uncle lives in North East. Next time I visit I’ll make a stop at Food Lion.
Baltimore MD, Food Lions here are chock full of American snuffs too. Considering some of the neighborhoods, I can’t imagine who’s buying these besides me…:?
I hear you snuffdog. As I mentioned in a previous post I found two Shwisher brands in my nearest smoke shop, in an less than affluent urban area here in Wilmington. Not exactly a run-down neigborhood, but not the best either. I think a lot of old black women still dip it in private. Many of them are transplants from the south, or learned it from their parents who were transplants. It seems to me to be a cultural thing, although I’ve never seen anyone use it, just read about it. I’m not saying its widespread here, but a few must use it at least. I bought one of the Swishers (Tops Sweet) it is pretty sweet, so I can see why it is mainly dipped. I dipped it a little bit, but I prefer it in my nose, where it is still sweet and has a nice nicotine kick. I haven’t checked the local supermarkets yet. As I said the nearest Food Lion is either below the canal or in Maryland. Food Lion is based in the south, so northern Delaware is out of their territory. Aroud here we have mostly PathMark, Acme, and a couple of others that I can’t remember right now.
I think one of the reasons it’s popular to dip snuff among southeren woman is in part the level of discretness it affords. Especialy since it’s only about one generation ago that woman where considered to classy or precious (or some other sexiest shit) to use tobacco openly. Notice you don’t know who uses it, this may be on purpose. Kind of like the number of people who dip regular chew at home but never in public.
Orlando, FL The only place that carries snuff around here is Winn-Dixie supermarkets. Some of the “tobacco” stores have snuff in the case, but they will not allow you to buy it, since it’s there to justify the bulletts and such that they sell.
They won’t let you buy it how the heck does that work. The stuff must be ancient. Seems like they could get into more trouble by not selling it then I guess.
I went into a store that I thought was an upscale Cigar and Cigarette shop. It ended up being a head shop. When I saw the Ozona in the case, I told the clerk “two please.” He then replied “eh, you don’t want that, it’s old and just for display.” I told him I would take it anyways, since it was still sealed, the then told me that it was only there so that they could sell the bullets, spoons and vials without hassle from the cops.
Draganici,Croatia
That is lame. I used to buy my rolling tobacco at a head shop. It was slightly more expensive but they actualy had some good selection and actualy moved a lot of rolling tobacco. Seems stupid not to be making money off something you need to stock anyways. Not only that what if you where an undercover cop couldn’t they get in trouble for not selling the snuff?
@ Roam. Ok you stumped me. You win the prize. I can’t find Dragnici on any of my maps. Are you on the coast? I was in Split last year. Are you near there?
Bob- I’m sure that they could. I haven’t been back to see if they are even still in business. The people at head shops down here are so shady. Wierd.
I guess head shops are shady in general. I’ve seen some shadier then others.
Rollies are getting more and more common, Farley. Many convience stores carry Drum products nowadays. Also our prices are gradually increasing to your levels, but this varies from state to state and even by city. New York city has an exteme tax on top of New York State’s tax that makes it about $8.00 per pack. However, Indian (Native American) reservations can sell tobacco virtually tax free and will even do mail order. They are in some ways independent states within the United States. They are the best kept secret of hard core smokers (other than blackmarket). Of course the buyer is supposed to report to their home state how much tobbaco they bring in and pay the appropriate tax on it. (You can guess how often this actually happens) I sailed with a guy who rolled his own. He spent a lot of time on it though. He even had a little machine to make them faster. For as little as I smoked, I couldnt be bothered though. Too much time. Oh, and I haven’t seen a cigarette vending maching since the early eighties!
I can still roll cigs faster than I’ve seen anyone make them with a machine! I did have a good teacher - a fork lift truck driver at the Bird’s Eye factory on Hessle Road (Hull). I worked summers there when I was a student in the 70s. Around here I reckon more people roll their own than buy ready mades. Probably helps being a port…
What is a “head shop” please?
@ Pieter http://www.headshop.co.uk/?gclid=CPLf0t7swpgCFZSB3godpVvS0w or google Head Shop, you get the theme?
Snuff Head, that’s probably the essential link to define a head shop.
I’m with ermtony on this one. It took some practice but i can roll a cigarette in no time flat , those little machines are slow and a pain to carry around.
@Roam: Thanks! It looks like a small town. The closest on any of my maps is Karlovac.
I’m in Arhus, Denmark - bet you can’t find that either? :o) I also lived in St. Petersburg Russia, Attiki, Greece, Essex, England, and NE PA, USA. But prefer it here :o)
hmmmmm, Arhus is pretty well known Viking. I probably couldn’t find it with my eyes closed though (but I tend to have maps in my minds eye, and I already know where it is!)
@Xander:In act my town is in fact the no.1 in town lenght in Croatia,it stretches in lenght of almost 20 Km. It’s only 40 Km From Zagreb, you can get to Zagreb in 40 minutes by highway.
OK, so a head shop in SA is called by it’s real name, a drug house.
Except a drug house is where people use drugs and sell/make them. A head shop is just where they sell paraphernalia, not the drugs themselves. As a matter of fact, in most of the US ones, if you even MENTION any drug, they’ll boot you out.
sychodelix is right. If you mention anything else besides tobacco, you’re out. It’s rather comical, really.
Ok. Bologna, Italy (or somewhat near)
Malmö, Sweden - Map
eastern pennsylvania, USA
Chesterfield, Derbyshire, England. Central/Northern England 20 miles from Sheffield and Derby, 40 miles from Nottingham and 50 from Manchester. Stefan
What is a Hubbely Bubbely/Hubbly Bubbly? I was in a cigarshop the other day when a Chinese gentleman walked in and asked the owner whether he can smoke a Hubbly Bubbly there. He was directed to another shop and I did not want to show my ignorance by asking what he was looking for.
It’s another name for hookah/water pipe
After a quick search it looks like “HubblyBubbly” refers to a Hookah. I may be wrong but that’s what i could come up with. I think your chinese friend was looking for a Hookah bar.
@ orion: can you be any more specific? I’m in Delaware, close to one part of eastern Pennsylvania. Any snuff for sale in your area?
Coventry, West Mids, England… Famous for Lady Godiva and getting bombed in the war (thus having lots of horrendous 1950’s architecture around the city centre) and…nothing else. Oh yeah… a rubbish football (soccer) team.
That’s awesome, Farley. For some reason, in all of the books and internet sites I’ve read, I have never come across that. I’m a huge JFK fan, so that made my day.
Haha, I can see it. Someone setting up camp on that acre. Could anyone really do anything?
Quote lxskllr "Curious… I wonder if I’d need a passport if I parachuted onto that acre :^D " No, but you would have a job getting out. Best to come by helicopter lol! Just thought I’m a British Subject, could I get in there?
Garland, TX it is a berb of Dallas
