Snus Vs. Snuff

Hello ! I have been using Swedish Snus for the past year and a half to two years. I greatly enjoy it, and use it quite frequently ( maybe 6-8 portions a day). The issue is that it is quite expensive to import, and I also worry about my teeth and gums. I have also been using nasal snuff for a some time now, but I find that I get plagued with sinus issues when I do use it for an extended period of time. With snus , I enjoy the slow release of nicotine over a longer span of time, but I find that sometimes I feel greatly unsatisfied in terms of that release ( I smoked cigarettes for 9 years, and being accustomed to the frequent topup of a cigarette). Thus, snuff taking seems to work , but the issue is clogged up nostrils and iritated sinuses. For those that do use snuff fulltime, how do you manage with all that tobacco up the nose ( I understand you need to blow your nose, but thats quite a bit of tobacco up there)? Thank you all !

Snuff some scotches, that stuff clears the sinuses instantly.

I wouldn’t consider myself a heavy snuffer like some, but I do snuff throughout the day. I mainly take toasts, and I hardly ever have to blow my nose. The snuff dries up in my nose, and falls out surreptitiously as I breathe out. Every morning, I blow out my nose in the shower and start the day with a clean sheet. Hey, you asked!

Scotches, toasts and SP’s keep my nose clear all day.

Once your nose becomes accustomed it is less of an issue. I make up once in the middle of the night sometimes and have to blow my nose. Rarely do I get congested during the day. I snuff primarily toast and Fubar Grunt.

How much tobacco is in your nose? I find some menthols clog me up. And medicated clear me up I had no problems with any other plain scented snuffs. And like @barredbenny I get a clean nose in the shower. A pea size dose every 15 minutes to half hour is normal if your doing 25 grams daily you need to slow down, It is not a race! There are fine snuffs that deliver nicotine faster like toasts, scotches and indian snuff

I’m a chain snuser and am about to run out of snus soon. I don’t plan to restock so wish me luck. I have found with snus I am less inclined to use snuff so I will be looking forward to putting snuff in the forefront. I plan on using hard candy as a means to break away from the oral fixation. I also suspect I will enjoy more pipe smoking in these times. Any posts in this thread may be helpful. Thank you in advance. Also Gax1985 an important note on the workings of the nose is the function of its cilia. These tiny hairs that keep debris (snuff) moving in the right direction can be damaged, especially from the hot smoke from cigarettes.

You will find some snuffs will give you more or less irritation. I have snuffs that clog me up in seconds and some that I use all day with no problems at all. My nose will tell me when/if it needs attention. Point is try different snuffs, You will find some that work for you.

Wishing you much luck in your new endeavor @Juxtaposer!!! Hang in there!

This is true. Try picking up small amounts of various snuffs and you may find one that agrees with you

It also constantly runs down the back of your throat and goes into the stomach, some people think it stays in the nostril and sinuses until you blow it out but it runs down and goes into the stomach… I hock it and either swallow or spit it out, I snuff quite a bit but I also use loose snus as well

Good luck @Juxtaposer. I’m also a chain-snuser, and would like to quit some time in the not-too-distant.

I wish you much luck, myself i believe snus and snuff to be SAFE.

When sinusitis becomes an issue, lay off the dairy completely. If you can do this, then eating onions, garlic, turmeric, ginger, and especially hot peppers, will greatly reduce the inflammation. Apples, which contain lots of quercetin, are also very good. Quercetin can be bought in its pure form in health food stores.

I would agree with that 3 more times if I could.

For me, it’s more what I snuff that clogs me up and the amount really doesn’t matter. Schmalzlers will clog me up quick (but oh so worth it). I’m only guessing, but it could be the oils used in schmalzlers that do this. Scotches dry my nose and medicated clears me out when I do get clogged up. Not sure about toasts, it’s been a long time since I last used one. I have two on order, so I’ll find out in about a week. I’ve also ordered a dry schmalzler (Sternecker product), and I’ll sniff some of that dry out of the bag. Just a little experiment to see if it’s the oils causing the problem. I’ll add my own “schmalz” later and see what happens.

I’m getting to the point where I want to increase my snus use and decrease my snuff use because I constantly feel snively. I want to pinch about twice an hour (instead of 3-4) and use 4-5 portions of snus a day. That way I can enjoy both and not be blowing my nose all day long.

I only started to utilize snus and it start as curiousness now it has become a beast.Calling out to me to use. I don’t have that with snuff but snus is so addictive more so than moist snuff dip. I suppose it the fact it don’t make my mouth salivate. And I don’t get results instantly like snuff and lose track of how long it’s in place. Kind of hesitant to try the Oliver Twist I may like them.

@Gax1985 you and I share a similar experience. Smoking for 10 years, then using Swedish snus for 2-3 years and now on to snuff for the past 2 years. When I started I wondered should I blow my nose or what, how does this work. I blow my nose when I feel like it, even if it’s just been 3 minutes into a double pinch of whatever is my current favourite. I pinch whenever I feel like it, sometimes it could be as much as 2 hours between pinches or as little as 10 minutes. With snuff there is no schedule, just do what you feel like and the rest should fall into place. I can say with smoking I’d be up every hour like clockwork, snuff is different. Some snuffs will clog you up, some will dry you up. Just find what works for you and let the rest fall away.

I use to chew redman daily, then switched to dip, then snus unitl my gums started to be an issue. i have been using snuff for the past 2 years, and I’ve only had a problem with nasal clogging when it comes to certain snuffs. i usually stick to hedges as my all day snuff so not many problems with clogging there and as @thorgrimnr said that with snuff its a do it when it feels right sort of thing…but if your clearing 25 to 50gr per day you may want to rethink your habit lol.  first post here btw…loving this community.
