What happened to the snufftalk site? It doesn’t seem to exist anymore.
Also, Snuff Tobacco UK (which I joined prior to finding this forum) is eerily quiet. Has everyone migrated here?
Yes it looks like Snufftalk has gone. A pity as there were some interesting documents there. Fortunately I saved local copies. I guess they should go on my own site now. I reckon it’s got to the point where Snuff House is the place for snuff takers now.
It certainly looks that way. I’m on STUK and the Yahoo! group as well. There’s rarely anything new in either one.
Snufftalk has definitely gone now, shame as there was some good stuff on there. Tony, would there be any issue/problem in you mailing me the article on snuff boxes? The STUK site is a waste of time now. About the only recent posts (unanswered) are from me giving some gentle advice on re-configuring it. However, if an owner either looses interest or can not commit to the time needed then they will just slowly die. Which is why snuffhouse is simpky the best forum on the net due to Alex and a dedicated bunch of posters. Does anyone have an up to date, full list of all of the current snuff sites out there?
I’ll try to find time to put all the articles I have on my site. That’s probably the easiest way. Not sure when I’ll get to that as I am still trying to catch up with work…
Looks like it may still be accessible at http://web.archive.org/web/*/http://www.snufftalk.org
thanks tony
Thanks for the time travel!
Yes, they’ve been gone for quite a while now. It was run by a guy in Arizona (Andy). I indirectly used the site on a daily basis because I had an e-mail account from them (onefortheroad@snufftalk.org) for all my snuff box dealings for a year and a half. Went to check my emails one day and it was gone. And though my wife warned me to transfer all my contact info and correspondence to another location, “just in case”, I never did. I was really disappointed. I really liked that site and it’s layout, functions, and other info. I always wondered why it didn’t catch on with everyone. It was actually started a few months before the creation of snuffhouse. I believe Alex and Andy were friendly with one another and members of each other’s sites early on. Hopefully Andy is okay and just moved on to other things.
Okay… I skived off for a while and set up a documents page:http://ermtony.pbworks.com/Snuff-DocumentsDoes anyone have any others to add?
Very good work, Tony. Very interesting books. I downloaded them to my computer. And the snuff advertisement is beautiful. That lady has so happy face!
And she reckons she won’t get the flu! It seemed sort of topical so I just had to add it to the page.
The Nicotiana catalog is quite sad. I wish that place was still around. Question… Is the “S.S.” snuff mentioned the Wilsons SS? If so, we now know that it stands for “Scotch Snuff”. The description matches.
You know, I’d missed that one! It does indeed look like you’re right and SS stands for Scotch Snuff. The description fits perfectly. So I wonder why Wilson’s don’t call it Scotch Snuff. Curious!
I will have to email them and see!
Shot them an email. Also asked them about the status of Grand Cairo, with all of this talk about it going extinct.
It’s nearly 6.50pm here now, so it will be morning (our time) before you get an answer. I’ll be very surprised if the Grand Cairo is for the chop. They seem to be reviving old snuffs and coming up with new ones rather than getting rid of any at the moment. Well, I’ll keep my fingers crossed anyway!
I’m hoping we get some info on Gold Label too. These two I have are as different as night and day.
I can’t remember if I ordered a Gold Label yet… I am really falling in love with Wilsons SP’s. There are already 2 of them I want in bulk. Uh Oh… here comes another obsession.
What? Instead of having 300 different tins, to have 300 different bulk tubs?
Great work Tony, thanks for keeping that stuff going.
@Xander: It’s up to 360something… sad. There are a couple 4 I would want in bulk, but thats at $40 a pop. Best SP, Morlaix, Grand Cairo, Brunswick. I tried Best Dark the other day… not sure what was going on with it, tasted vile to me.
hmm, Best Dark needs to be moist and fresh to be judged fairly. If yours was fresh then maybe you just don’t like it. Its like Brunswick, though less complex and tangy in flavor. I seem to be finding SS to be my favorite straight SP, and Grand Cairo to be my favorite complex one. As for bulk, well there are so many SPs I don’t know if I can commit to one or even 4. Strasbourg is on my bulk wishlist though.
My Best Dark was plenty moist. I’ll give it another shot tomorrow, maybe it was just my nose. SS is a fine snuff, very tasty! Grand Cairo has captured my heart.
I started off on Snufftalk and gradually found my way to Snuffhouse from there. Its a shame the site has gone as it was very informative and a good forum at one point but that is going back about 3 years,(yes I have been around that long lol). Andy was a good bloke and would post on here as Alex would post on there. Shame. Stefan
Here is the word from Wilsons:_ “Hi the names of snuff originate from years ago and sometimes people make there own meanings for letters. The grand cairo snuff is not being discontinued” _ So… I guess that SS is Scotch Snuff. It’s not really a solild answer. But I’m happy to hear that Grand Cairo will be around for a long time!
I asked Carol Walker at Wilsons what did SS Snuff stand for, that was a few months ago now and she wouldn’t be drawn. Perhaps they don’t know, LOL! I always think of it as ‘Super Sharrow’ Snuff.
