I could be completely wrong, but for me its Taxi and those South African snuffs like that. I haven’t heard a single thing about them that makes me want to try them. They sound yucky. Cheese and Bacon. I don’t see why I should be the butt of one of Roderick’s jokes. Poschl Apricot. It just sounds silly and pointless.
yin yang smiley face over priced energy snuff or any so called energy snuffs of the white powder variety If it is not right for me I ain’t buying it. Snuff Said
I will not try any snuffs that have liquorice {yuk, yuk } as there flavour base…
@dazz34 then you won’t like Toque absinthe, Wilson’s aniseed Eucalyptus ,Wilsons Aniseed Extra ,Wilsons Dr.Rumney’s, Wilsons Ice Licorice or SG aniseed also Löwen-Prise and Dholakia Aniseed menthol
I have very little interest in fruit & berry scented snuffs. The aromas always seem so fake to me. Citrus is mostly fine, though. I like citrus scents. I’m curious about SG’s Plum snuff for some reason, though. I have an inkling I might like it. Savory food scents sound terrible to me. They are on the bottom of the list along with all non-tobacco snuffs. Still, I will try everything once if offered, you’ll never know what you might like.
Tobacco free snuff and white snuff.
Tobacco-free and anything that tastes at all of licorice (just hate the flavor). Pretty much on board to try anything else (including Cheese and Bacon).
Tobacco-free. If I met someone who had Cheese & Bacon snuff (or any other “savory” snuff) or if I could get it VERY cheap, I would definitely try it. However, I’m not going to spend much money on something I’m sure I’m going to hate.
Tobacco free and florals. I really just do not like the scent of any flower near enough to want it directly in my nose. Actually I do not like the scent of most flowers that much at all.
As a great man once siad; “You should try everything once, except incest and folk dancing.” ~Sir Thomas Beecham Although tobacco-free does seem kind of pointless. But i have tried - Bernards Magic moments.
I agree with @Jari_T his thoughts mirror mine almost exactly, but I agree with everyone else regarding tobacco free snuff too…I mean, what’s the point?
I don’t really have any interest in trying most mentholated European snuffs, they all smell pretty much exactly the same to me (like menthol).
Florals…though i cant honestly say that i wouldnt try them but i certainly wouldn’t buy them to try them. If someone had some I’d certainly give it a shot even though the few that i have tried I did not get along with very well. I don’t think I would buy an energy snuff either but I would definitely try it. I do love Monster and Red Bull so who knows.
No menthols, none that don’t have vitamin N
Menthols, If I wanted to smell menthol I would take vicks and rub my chest with it. Menthol over powers everything and ruins any other snuffs you try. Real strong flower smells or perfume , I do like Rose tho… I like a natural strong flavors…
@magicdust Agreed fully— never a fan of anything mentholated that isn’t a cough drop and I hate those as well…
florals & Tobacco free
it interests me that most seem to be saying tobacco free and florals. not manly enough?
@jarkaboy don’t be led by other peoples views. you should try every snuff you possibly can, even ones you suspect you’ll hate. its the only way. at some point soon, after 4 years snuffing, I’m going to reorder all the snuffs I hated. I betcha I will love some of them now. your nose changes.
no I draw the line at tobacco free snuff just like I won’t drink alcohol free beer? whats the point?
Samuel Gawith Golden Glow, I was browsing their selection and I found this and I thought I must have it as I love their pipe baccy with the same name but after checking a few reviews I find out it’s a a mint scent and I’m really disappointed. Also anything with cola in it as I just don’t see the point.
I didn’t think I liked florals until I found GANGA and Lavendar Dark. yummmmmiieeee
I have to be honest, I am game for trying just about any kind of snuff. There are some that I would look forward to trying more so than others. Actually, typed too soon, Ozona Snuffy Weiss, basically everything I have heard about it just plain sounds boring.
@jarkaboy I’m going to reorder all the snuffs I hated. I betcha I will love some of them now. your nose changes.
Really an excellent point. Originally, I did not love Dholakia White or FUBAR Medic, however, several months later, I began to really enjoy them. The way I see it some snuffs you need to give yourself time to see how you really feel about them.
Tobacco free snuff and white snuff.
white snuffs for me are a medicine.
it interests me that most seem to be saying tobacco free and florals. not manly enough?
Floral scents seem to give me a very uncomfortable feeling…like needing to sneeze but being unable to. Non tobacco I just see no point in. I snuff for nicotine plain and simple so non tobacco snuff would be silly.
@JakartaBoy I kinda’ like NTSU Snuff (green) from South Africa. I always used to buy it from Wesley’s of South Africa.
I didn’t know florals were this unpopular. It is not the most surprising thing in the world, I kinda get it… but then again I am very eager to try a reccomended floral snuff. Lavender Dark sounds nice. Rose also… the smell of an alpine blooming field also sounds nice. Tobacco free snuffs definitely don’t interest me. Other than that there are only snuffs which are at the bottom of my list-to-try: * Toque Quit (the name and logo annoy me horribly and I can find the same satisfaction elsewhere.) * FUBAR - again, it’s the image thing. Military obnoxiousness. * Toque Cheese & Bacon - Come on, seriously…? Even if people swear by it I stay away from it for the principle of class. It’s despicable on quite a few levels. I’ll probably try those one day though… but they are on the bottom of my list.
I like Thai Herbal Red and Purple and will try the Yellow. Now dholakia herbal was gross IMO,I do get on with kanna snuff; but have little time with my horde of tobacco snuff. I given up on finding an apricot snuff I like. some fruit snuffs are disappointing, Some love them, my nose must be different. Floral are Ok unless the are cloying like Dho Rose Chocolate, one hit last one day.
Gawith apricot. Everything about it is wrong. I know there are people that like it, I wouldn’t even try.
@basement_shaman did you not like the WoS Apricot? That one wins hands down for me. And to the OP no, there is no snuff I will not try, although some have lower priority than others.
Yeah, I suppose I should ammend my answer. I would try them but I have no interest in spending money to do so on other snuff I know I would like much better. As for the “manliness” of florals, that is not my issue at least. I genuinely do not like most flower scents. Super Chetak smells exactly like my wifes perfume so definitely not manly but one of my favorites, lol.
There is not much I wouldn’t try if a trusted person offered me some. I’ve tried a couple of florals, and while I did finish the tins, I won’t be revisiting any florals for a while. Same with toasts and any of the American snuffs. If some one offered me a pinch of any kind of licorice I’d take it to be polite, but I won’t be buying any.
American snuff. what absolute garbage.
Tobacco free snuff and white snuff.
white snuffs for me are a medicine.
Are white sniffs tobacco? If so, how are they white. Interested…
I’m too new to be completely “I won’t try this,” but I’m pretty sure that I wouldn’t even try anything that veers too far away from tobacco flavor. My present snuffs are all straight tobacco. I would also be amenable to scented snuffs, ones that I think have a nose of something else, but aren’t heavily flavored. Thus, I think I’d really like the florals. I love licorice, but I don’t think I’d try anything candy-like. I agree with those who say non-tobacco snuffs are out, and for the same reason. It has a solid “What’s the point” feel to me. I use tobacco products because I have learned to like the taste and smell, so anything that’s not tobacco trying to taste like tobacco seems an exercise in futility. Having said all that, if offered, I’d probably try anything, unless the nose was such that it completely turned me off (Bacon & cheese? Love both, not in my nose; personal preference), then I would politely decline. But who knows, maybe I’d like something I didn’t think I would.
@Hoopei there are indian whites they are not white {pale tan} and are tobacco, White powder snuff- non tobacco are sugar for energy, some may have guarana may contain caffeine, other have menthol or other similar decongestants, I know of better tobacco decongestants to use
Hmm, I feel slightly chastened by everyone’s “try anything once” approach. I’m sure if someone offered me a pinch of practically any snuff (possibly not Cheese and Bacon), I’d try it. But to try a snuff, I usually have to order it from overseas and buy it. The ones I mentioned in my OP are the ones that aren’t only low down on my list, they aren’t on my wish list at all. On the other hand, I thought that about ALL menthols a while back, but now I find that there are some menthols I do in fact enjoy (a little bit, occasionally). So yeah, best to be open to trying new stuff, I guess.
@JakartaBoy, I don’t know about that; There have been many who are opposed to all menthols or licorice. Some of us are new enough that we can’t make any assumptions about what we’ll like or not like. And I am the same regarding buying tins, however. While I’d try a menthol offered, I won’t buy any menthol sight unseen, period. Same for the more fruity ones. The florals, especially rose, I’d risk. Straight tobacco (except for High Dry Toasts) are an automatic consideration. Risk versus reward…
If some one offered me a pinch…
Wow, imagine a world where being offered pinches were the norm…
I’m too new to be completely “I won’t try this,” but I’m pretty sure that I wouldn’t even try anything that veers too far away from tobacco flavor. My present snuffs are all straight tobacco.
Seems like we have the same taste for snuff basically; in that regard I want to reccomend “Poschl Schmalzler A Brasil”. Holy moly that one takes pure tobacco deliciousness to a new level!
I’d be happiest man on the world if I could try every snuff.
After having a little Toque cherry menthol I’ve decided not to even bother sampling another cherry snuff ever again, by the looks of things cherry snuff is going to go the way of cherry pipe tobacco aka it’s universally crap.
The non menthol Toque Cherry is the only cherry snuff I like.
Seems like we have the same taste for snuff basically; in that regard I want to reccomend “Poschl Schmalzler A Brasil”. Holy moly that one takes pure tobacco deliciousness to a new level!
I guess I’ll find out. Got some, as well as another Schmalzler and like 10 other snuffs, including a couple of scented ones. I’ll post in a week or so my thoughts…
There are actually a great many snuffs I won’t bother with … Dh White, and White Elephant: My nose is not compatible with finer snuffs, and these would likely hospitalise me. Technique doesn’t enter into the equation, I’ve tried everything at least twice, and nothing makes snuffs like this even remotely enjoyable. American scotches: Same reason Most menthols: I’m hypersensitive to menthol, and it burns my face, inside and out, like someone has thrown acid at me. I put most menthols, because some I can tolerate, including Anarkali and Kailash. I have discovered there are others I can take one small pinch of without too much discomfort, such as WoS Honey and Lemon (now Bee Cool) Chilli scented snuffs: Similar to the menthol, I’d rather not have the extra discomfort from the chilli. Why people use the likes of Bohica confuses the hell out of me. Schmaltzers: I have nothing against this type of snuff, and did try one (I forget which), but I’m a pincher not a tapper, and these don’t store well from what I hear. With the way I open something and then don’t visit it again for ages, this is likely to have spoiled before I’ve used it up. I’d rather just stick with a water moistened rappee. I won’t try Indian snuffs that use ghee for the same reason. Non-tobacco snuffs: To me that’s like phoning your local pizza place, and ordering an empty box. I don’t see the point Anything that comes in a tap box: I’ve learnt my lesson with that one Anything that comes in a bullet: Another lesson learned Artisanal snuffs: The ones I’ve tried have ALL been too finely ground, or have given me a backdrip that makes me physically gag. I don’t know they are/aren’t including in the process that causes this, but I’ve stopped trying. There wasn’t a single snuff I tried from Daniel, Nigel or Johnny that was compatible with my nose. Not their fault - others love their stuff - it’s just not for me. Toasts: Aside from the fine grind being problematic for me, I don’t like the scent. Dr Rumneys Brown being the only exception I’ve found. Thankfully, and even after the EU tried screwing up our hobby, there is still a huge range of snuffs which I can thoroughly enjoy. Hooray for the enormous diversity the snuff world offers us.
Tobacco-Free ain’t for me. 8-}
Anything perfumed. It’s fine on my woman sometimes but she sure dose not sit in my nose either.
Are you sure your mrs is putting the snuff in the right place…?
I’ve never bought any artisan snuffs due to the cost to benefit ratio being too high for me. I’ve at least tried most other types, so I know what I like and have a ‘never again’ list. Never Agains: Indian whites, schmalzlers, poschl products, most F&T, fruit and food flavors…
Shame about the F&T Sandwich, though I was like that for a while too. Took me some time to appreciate them, though even now I tend to use several of them for mixing with more often than using neat… yet I use Burgundy neat. :-??
I’m not saying F&T were bad per se. I used to mix them down myself and they were enjoyable. Just not enjoyable enough to reorder.
Gotcha! I’ve had a fair few snuffs like that too
Non-tobacco snuffs for sure. I was going to say florals, but realized I love Maccoboy and GH English Rose, plus I love F&T Patchouli. Also like McC’s violet. So clearly I like florals, even though I have no desire to buy “carnation” or “western glory”. No desire to try White Elephant, based on people’s descriptions. Not a fan of fishiness.
Anything food or floral related… especially fruit flavours, just not my thing Indian whites & toasts I have tried delicately by placing snuff in the nose and every time I wheeze and lasts a day or two, I am very sure snuff can get in the lungs… my nose does not seem to tolerate fine or dry snuffs, I will try again in about 5 years time, until then I’m going to stick to plain tobacco moist snuffs. I do enjoy menthols… but makes my nose drip so it’s not enjoyable for an all day snuff for me
I would never try licorice or aniseed snuff. I just don’t like the flavor/scent. the one reason I use non tobacco menthol snuffs is due to my job. I work at a Hospital and some patients don’t smell that good. I once used regular menthol snuff and used too much and got nauseated and had the sweats. If I use non tobacco snuff, I don’t have that problem.
I am on same boat as 50ft_trad.
Indian snuff for some unknown reason I have never put any intrestet on them. As read here DH White and White Elephant are way too fine grind.
Toasts I have really hard time to enjoy them, its just burns like living fire inside of my sinuses. I have never propperly mastered technique how use them.
Menthols let say 99% of them are no-go to me. Personally I detetest mentol in any form from chewing gums to toothpaste (snuff included). but for some unknown reason I can enjoy small pinch of vintage (pre 2002 vac tin of JH Wilson Medicated No. 99)
Anything which flavoured with Anise, Star Anise, Licorice never like stuff with those flavours nad tastes.
Special place belongs to F&T Patchouli really horrid one.
Any snuff with Cola flavour.
White non-tobacco snuffs why i shall buy glucose with flavour for 3+ Lstg per 1/3 oz if i can buy almost 2lbs of pure glucose for same amount of money?
Chilli and other “weird” snuff like Toque Cheese&Bacon. The last one is really odd stuff, purchased one 10g tin for my coleague whom requested it. Chilli snuff why I shall sniff chilli powder? Its million times better in food than in my nose.
Germanic snuffs with “Brazil” base, do not like its smell.
Jack
I have tried almost everything I thought I’d hate, except Toque Cheese and Bacon, and I still may get around to it one day. The only snuff I ever actually hated was Fubar Fugazi Black Joe, not the scent, but the texture. It somehow hit my throat, every time I used it. I actually kept it around for a year or 2, then flushed it down the toilet. Thats the only time I’ve ever done that to a snuff. I pretty much like all snuff I guess. I even enjoy the new recipe Dholakia African, which I, at first sniff, hated. @basement_shaman… I tried Kanna snuff for a little while, but it really didn’t do anything for me. I don’t remember why I bought it, but I think it was supposed to be calming, or something like that. I’m always open to snuffing something new and different these days.
@mrmanos Kanna never did anything for me either; I used it for awhile didn’t hate it. I guess I had burned out those pleasure receptors in the early 70tys to appreciate what it had to offer. Or may be it was just old when I got it. fresh cut may make the difference. Herbs are funny that way. like fruits and vegetables loose a significant amount of their nutritional value before you even buy them.
It’s interesting how preferences differ so drastically. Some peoples comments I can relate to, some I cannot.
The only thing I indefinitely agree about is tobacco free snuff, which is something that I would never spend money on. Indian whites are something I’ve tried, but not liked thus far. Too much ammonia, though I remain open. I love a good toast, but it took me quite a while to learn how to snuff it, let alone appreciate it. I can understand how some people simply won’t get on with them. A good starting point for me were the more user friendly Torque toasts (Almond, Lime etc).
I think Polsch make some descent snuff and strangely, like their Gawith Apicot. I don’t like any other apricots, or indeed fruit snuff generally (barring Citrus).
I think that F&T are up there with the best of them! Bordeaux, Old Paris and HDT are classics. Also, I only like menthol if it’s done right i.e. Benards Fichtennadel, WoS Honey & Menthol or SG Gold Mull etc.
I’ll never ever try another rose snuff ever again!
I wont try any of the WoS or Sam Gawith snuffs that have been dropped from their catalogues recently,
but are still on the shelves in the shops.
It would be awful to discover a wonderful snuff that has been discontinued.
@Rogue which rose snuffs have you tried?
@Aamon snuffstore’s. I’ve never liked the smell of roses at all, but for some reason I figured I’d try it in a snuff. Just not my scent at all…but if you like the smell of roses, it’s a 10/10.
Did I mention it made my nose drip as hell?
Not sure if it counts if I’ve already tried them - but shmalzlers. I fell in love with them at first but now I’m not even slightly interested in ever having another.
Anything with a “Lakelands” scent.
Pungent Old Lady scent and soap doesn’t belong in my nose. If someone gave me a snuff with an Ennerdale scent, then laughed at me, I would most likely pummel them.
@moemojo That’s precisely the scent that I favor. I’m currently disappointed that my last tin isn’t giving me enough musky gardenia old lady perfume. Funny how tastes differ.
Yep.
Not only how they differ, but how they change over time.
In the company I keep, being offered a pinch IS the norm. That is how I first got into snuff. I am now the one doing the offering. I hardly have a single friend who doesn’t use snuff, at least on occasion.
