Following the suggestions of some of you I’ve reevaluated my pipe smoking habits and discovered that, though I have been smoking a pipe on and off for several years, I never actually smoked a pipe until a few days ago. Needless to say, this has led to quite a bit of pipe smoking in the past few days. I’m curious what suggestions some of you would have as to what snuffs compliment a pipe well. As far as which pipe tobacco’s I’ve been favoring: I’ve got a huge bag of drugstore “Golden Burley” and “Toasted Cavendish”, and have found I prefer the burley more, although I sometimes will mix the two. I’ve also been enjoying Prince Albert quite a bit. I haven’t had a chance to find any pipe tobaccos above the ‘drugstore’ type.
There are tons of pipe tobaccos available. It’s an adventure. Mars has a LOT of blends. Other formats than ready rubbed are fun. Plugs, ropes, flakes, they require more prep and attention sometimes, but the strength levels vary a lot. I smoke PA once in a while. Here’s a link to a great pipe forum: http://www.smokersforums.co.uk/
Mars has some great pipe tobaccos it’s where I get mine from. My favorite aromatics would be the brebbias and the peterson. of the brebbias I like allegro which is a mellow mango vanilla blend great room scent. I also really like the quartetto which still has a lot of tobacco flavour with kind of a mulling spice type flavour. The peterson sunset breeze is amazing has a bit of a bite to it unless you age it (put it in a dark closet in a ball jar for a few months it mellows it out a bit and enriches the flavour). For the quartetto I recomend a sweet complex snuff like some of the F&Ts or wilsons royal george or any good clove snuff will work wonders with that blend. For the allegro I recomend something fruity and sweet or jasmine goes well with gaiwith apricot (by poschel). For the sunset breeze I recomend whiskey and honey or something natural. my favorite none flake is “bankers” by fox closest thing I’ve tasted to cuban tobacco that claims to be havana seed strangly very strong flavour yet velvety smooth at the same time for this one I recomend a robust natrual snuff like the latakia from dutch windmills. As you can see you can get as complexe with the pipe-snuff combos as with wine pairings. The main thing is to find enjoyment. P.s. I’ve noticed that vanilla snuffs do not seem to oppose any pipe tobaccos. P.s. I know as a fact from what you’ve said you like that the foxs seem to blow the mind of prince albert smokers (extremely diffrent smokes but if you like prince albert there is not way you’ll not dig the bankers.) Though my favorite smokes are the flakes once you’ve got some more pipe skills (you can be the judge of that) try the virgina flake from solani it’s practicaly a wet-dream.
i find that if i find the particular tobacco i’m smoking in my pipe becomes a bit boring (or sometimes regardless just for fun) i like to sprinkle some qws sandalwood in the bowl and it gives the pipe a nice sandalwood flavor for a good 5 minutes or more.
Any
I don’t usually mix snuff in the bowl, but I have had a good results. PA and Bernard Virginie. It was pretty good as I remember. The Virginie enhanced the flavor of the burley. On rare occasion I’ll take some snuff whilst smoking a bowl, but not often. SP’s go good with a pipe.
Gil’ - I’ll pick up some DANK tobaccos from Tribeca any hook you up with a couple bowlfulls. I imagine toque natural would compliment any pipe tobacco.
I like to pack my peterson pipe full of a Va/Per and every now and then dust it with either chocolate or a SP.
Thanks for all the suggestions guys. I’ll let you know how they work out. Well met, Lord Snuffington. The forum suffered the lack of your regal presence.
I’ve had great results sprinkling some Bespoke Christmas Joy in my bowl. Makes for a wonderful smoke. Edit - Speaking of pipes and snuff, does anyone know if SG Golden Glow pipe tobacco is the same flavor as the snuff of the same name? I see they’ve got it on Mars Cigars, and I’m a bit curious.
Funny thing. I would never light a good snuff on fire but it so happened that the pipe tobacco that I was grinding for snuff would be sieved no further. So, thanks to this thread, I put it on top of a half packed mini pipe bowl. That fire sat me down right off. A good contemplative half hour I’d say. Man…I love tobacco!
