Apologies if there’s already a post on this, but does anyone else notice snuffs smelling different/ weird when they’ve got a head cold? I have been trying to work through a fairly blocked head, and thus blowing my nose more often. When snuffing my HDT or IHT 22, it seems they smell different/ hit me harder. Anybody else have this experience? It’s been taking some of my favorite snuffs and making them weird to me.
I had mono a while ago. And when it was at it’s worst all snuffs smelled a lot like creosote mixed with cigarette butts. Didn’t matter the snuff either.
@bob when I had a mononucleosis I have’t been diagnosed properly, doc prescribed me some antibiotic - I have no idea which it was, but after taking those pills bread tasted like raspberries, ketchup like cinammon, schnitzel like potatoes… That really messed up my taste sense.
yeah mono fucks you the fuck up or it can.
I’d never heard of that (mono) before - till wiki told me it was what I know as glandular fever. I’d say that all bets are off when you have that, and just play to what your body tells you it’s happy with. As for a head cold, well I had one recently and the scents remained the same(ish) - although I found I could take toasts and other fine grinds a lot easier.
I don’t even want to be near tobacco when I’m sick. It’s pretty much the only time I’ll go without for 24+ hours and not even miss it.
yes
One looks at tobacco when properly sick the same way one looks at a bottle of 120 proof when hung over… : P
@Mario84 Hair of the dog that bit you? Good hangover cure : )
I use it, but the exhilaration just isn’t there.
Yup… The olfactory bulb just gets ‘gunked up’. Generally much better w time…
I snuff when I’m sick, at that point it’s the only pleasure I have

I agree. Most people I know complain about the smell of liquor the following day… I myself drink like a mother****** when hung over xD I can however picture snuff being a slightly heavy ordeal when sick. I guess it all depends though. I have yet to experience it… snus wasn’t quite as interesting during sick spells in the past.
The good thing about snuff is the variety. If the sickness dulls the scent you can move to a more pungent one, or go more subtle if your nose is feeling delicate. I still don’t think it will ever be the same though. If you are a fully fledged nic addict, part of getting your next fix is for a feeling of “normality”, which you won’t achieve whilst feeling sick. When I was just smoking cigs I had the choice of feeling sick and the smoke making me feel more grotty (throat more sore, tongue more furry etc), or feelings of sickness and nic deprivation/withdrawal. It was a matter of choosing the lesser of two evils. At least with a nice cluster of snuffs that work with your current condition, you might be able to lighten your mood a little … but yes, there’s a good chance the scents will be different to when you are well
I use menthol snuffs to help open me up a bit. I only use them lightly though, as too much menthol can have the opposite effect and even make me more stuff by order of magnitudes. I happen to be fighting a nasty head cold and have NO sense of smell whatsoever. I can’t detect any scent, but I can feel the menthol coolness and slightly easier time breathing.
yes ,As long as I have a heart beat. Medicated is best. Menthol’s are alright. St Casura is awesome
I started coming down with something last night. Today has been a nightmare. Hopefully it’ll break in the not too distant future. That’s how it usually works when I’m sick. 24-36 hours curled up in a ball feeling like Job, followed by sudden intense unwaking sleep. Then I wake up (be it in the morning or the middle of the night) feeling better than I have in months. Hoping that’s the case this time too. First of all, my last OM order came today (including Bananas Foster), as well as a mix of good cigars. I’m gonna bite the bullet and wait until I feel better to try them. Also, I had my first three reviews set up to record this weekend. Need, really need, this to pass soon. In the meantime, on the topic I rudely chose to bump, there is nothing that has gone in my nose today that I have enjoyed, and strangely enough, the actual process of taking a pinch is starting to trigger involuntary gagging. Not really sure what that’s all about. Probably gonna break out some snus for now for my Vit-N. Maybe something bland and unoffensive like Roda Lacket Los. Ergh.
When sick, all I do it snus. And even that drops off in frequency. If I’m really sick, I’ll go without tobacco. But, that is pretty rare. I can usually manage a snus.

@markstinson Just baked a prilla. That’ll take the edge off a bit. In the meantime, it occurs to me that this is a great chance for an experiment. It is said that Toque Coltsfoot (a total gem I just recently discovered) is medicinal. Not medicinal in the montholated sense, but medicinal in the “this’ll loosen you up and help with that headache” kind of way. @Roderick himself never claimed this, but others have. Let’s have a pinch and find out! If it is even slightly alleviating, I’m placing a bulk order for the winter. If not, at least it smells really nice B-)
Let us know how it works. :-)
