Snuffhouse Points, Reactions & Badges: Do You Pay Much Attention?

We all know that Snuffhouse keeps track of our points, keeping a running record on each of our pages. There is also, obviously, a running record of the number of likes, agrees, and insightfuls on our individual pages. And badges are tracked as well, as there is a number of points awarded for the various badges received. For my part, I think this is an interesting feature of the Snuffhouse forum overall. There are some interesting things that can be learned from how Snuffhouse tracks things. For example, based on the number of first comment data, 1066 people (at this time) have made at least one comment on Snuffhouse in all of its history (or so it would appear). So a few questions for you, if you please. Answer, whatever question appeals to you… • Do you attend to things on Snuffhouse like number of points, agrees, or number of insightfuls? • Why does Snuffhouse bother to track and count such things as reactions and points? • Do you have an opinion on what these things actually mean, or indicate, about a member? • Do the number, or type, of reactions tell us anything about Snuffhouse members. • Does having lots of points relative to number of posts mean that what such a member has to say is somehow more appreciated by the general membership? Or not? • Do you even care–is this all meaningless to you? I know these things are not simple. I know that these are difficult questions. They involve much complexity, and are not easy to answer. But your viewpoint is interesting if you care to take the time. I am also interested to know if you don’t give a sh#t one way or the other, and/or if this entire thread should be ignored. Thank you.

It is nice to be liked. I nearly have 10,000 posts.

Yes, @lunecat, and you have over twice as many points as you have posts. And you are also the all time leader in insightfuls with 269 (as of this date). Very cool.

Personally, its meaningless to me.

I see all those forum-feedback things as attempts to strengthen the feeling of inclusion and community. I wish some of them were included on one of the sparsely populated pipe lists I frequent. Making a post there is like talking to an empty room much of the time.

The only thing I notice is post count. Of course, it is not necessarily indicative of a posting of accurate and pertinent information, but longevity on any forum is generally a good sign.

I have been here about 10 weeks at this point. I have 10 threads I started, and 505 comments ( when I post this one ) for 515 posts. I am sitting on a dead solid 1 K “likes”. I check it every so often, for novelty - I think it is kinda fun, personally. The “points” thing baffles me a bit, but the concrete numbers I get.

The most interesting one to me is the “anniversary” badge. I would have never guessed I’ve been here for 6 years if I wasn’t reminded. Wow! I can’t believe it was that long ago that Roderick recommended I check this place out.

What do you think of the following? Likes are good and common reactions. Agrees are better and relatively common. Insightfuls are best and uncommon reactions. Questions… Does the number of agrees and insightfuls (especially insightfuls) relative to the number of posts provide a rough, general indicator of a person’s snuff knowledge? Or are those 2 ratings more or less irrelevant as to how much a member actually knows about snuff? For example, many members have many hundreds (well over a thousand) likes but only a couple of dozen insightfuls. By contrast, some members get a high number of insightfuls relative to their number of likes and number of posts. Is this an indicator of anything? Your thoughts?

I understand @mouse. I have had the same experience on many pipe lists.

I think all of it adds to the feeling of community here. People read what is posted. It’s a good thing.

Likesystems can rly be a double edged sword. The danger is a promotion of “likewhoring” or trading of likes, on the other hand it can function as some kind of reward for the effort, people put in their posts. Furthermore it can be a marker for helpful posts if one is fastreading a thread. In this community the positive aspects clearly outweigh the negative i think, so its a good thing after all.

I don’t pay any attention to someone else’s points or like counts or badges. I do really enjoy the like, agree, insightful buttons. It lets me know quickly of a popular thought and seems to mostly rid this forum of those annoying “+1” posts. Post counts don’t matter much to me, it doesn’t matter if a person has 10 or 10,000 posts if they post something helpful.

Hi @bigmick. I like what you said… What is a 1+ post?

@fredh‌ , on some forums when a member agrees with another member but doesn’t want or have anything to add to the conversation they simply post “+1”. It adds nothing, except to their post count. I don’t like having to scroll through half a page of +1 posts to get to a post that might teach me something. Here I can see all those that agree with a post at the bottom of the post and move on. Recently a lot of forums have cracked down on the +1 postings, but it still happens and annoys me. Of course it’s a minor annoyance compared to other things, like the know-it-alls or the snobs that believe you can’t enjoy something with spending , for example, $500 + for a pipe, or buying only SWS snuffs. I really like it here as we don’t get a lot of those people and the ones we do get seem to leave fairly quickly.
